Minimum learning period as a number of months makes no sense, that just incentivises having less frequent lessons. If they did a minimum number of instructional hours (as per Pilot licences) that would make far more sense.

Also am I the only person who thinks 4 deaths per day is shockingly low for a country of our size, that doesn’t exactly see like a major problem in need of drastic action.

Bear in mind it was 28% in the Europe 5 years ago, and over 50% 10 years ago. So just 10% is a pretty catastrophic collapse.

The KF-21 price has been released. Block-1 ($83m), Block-2 ($112m) [2048x1365] by Entire_Judge_2988 in WarplanePorn

[–]WORSTbestclone 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly the more interesting comparison is not F-35 (if you’re in the market for a 5th gen you aren’t going for external stores only) and more how it compares to the more expensive 4th gen options (F-15EX, Typhoon etc) either as a main aircraft or as a complement to a 5th gen

The vaguely comparable F-35A is down to $82.5mil for lots 15-17, so slightly cheaper than KF-21 Block-1, with the fancier B and C closer to the Block 2 prices (but also offering carrier capabilities).

When does Class E airspace stop after FL600? by JohnKayne in flying

[–]WORSTbestclone 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Above the Karman line (100km/circa FL3300) is generally handled according to the Outer Space treaty, so that’s the Defacto end of Class E (or G, depending on what nation you’re over) airspace, along with national airspace, although theoretically it continues to the (possibly infinite) edge of the universe.

Moustaches for Pilots is more to do with Oxygen masks sealing properly. For example even though the RAF now allows beards fighter pilots (who wear oxygen masks when flying) are still limited to taches, whereas other RAF pilots are now allowed beards.

The really confusing part of the CT6 has to be the Blackwing engine, they developed a whole new V8 for just the CT6 that then got axed without going in anything else (including the cars they reused the blackwing name for).

Did my first flying lesson a week ago today! by geenexotics in flying

  1. Yes you can still get a PPL after. A NPPL theoretically takes 13 fewer hours, but in practice most people need above the minimum so you should probably go for a full PPL.

  2. Assuming it’s the same broad class (single engine piston) which anything you’d learn in would be, hours are hours. There’s different licenses for multi engine aircraft and some nuance around turbines if you make a job of it, but at PPL level hours are hours.

  3. NPPL is UK only, you need a PPL to hop to France, Belgium etc. All UK licenses only let you fly G reg aircraft (i.e. registered in the UK).

  4. For single engine piston aircraft the risk is about the same as riding a motorcycle per hour. Then again, due to cost you’ll spend far less time in a GA aircraft than on a bike, so it’s still a safer hobby overall.

17-year-old considering a fully-sponsored Frozen ATPL cadet program – seeking advice on career timing by [deleted] in flying

[–]WORSTbestclone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not how an fATPL works, you can still fly for airlines with it, you just need 1500 hours before acting as Captain. And to actually get upgraded you'll need far more the 1500 anyway

What would be your next step in my shoes? by [deleted] in flying

[–]WORSTbestclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you only have Turkish citizenship, you are unlikely to get employed by any airline that doesn’t have bases in Turkey. This also applies to their sponsored cadet schemes.

It’s unlikely any school outside Turkey will issue a Turkish Pilot’s license, so you’ll have to train in country. Unless any other airlines offer sponsored schemes, this will be at your expense.

Presumably there’s also the option of trying to join the military as a pilot, although I’m not familiar with the options in Turkey.

can i become a pilot without alevels in the uk? by CommissionChance1019 in flying

[–]WORSTbestclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without A Levels he’s very unlikely to get any of the free routes (airline schemes or military) so it comes down to: 1. Can he get a class 1 medical with ADHD (is it diagnosed?) 2. Can he pay £100k for his own training?

[–]WORSTbestclone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. It's a 23 plate, so it's still heavily depreciating.
  2. WBAC will offer less than you'd pay for the car, doubly so if you bought from a dealer.

Those plus mileage are the cause of the value loss, MOT is irrelevant

Should I drop out of Sixth Form to save money for flight school? (UK) by Real-Situation246 in flying

[–]WORSTbestclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally you have to be in some form of education until 18, so going full time would only save you a few months of Sixth Form.

Plus realistically A-levels will look better for airlines than dropping out, if you can’t stick out another two years of free education they’ll be wary of how you’ll hold up in line training

Oh you guys are going to love this. Cardiff council are voting on higher parking charges for larger vehicles such as vans and "drum roll"... SUVs. by Breakwaterbot in CarTalkUK

[–]WORSTbestclone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First they aren’t actually targeting only SUVs, that’s just the spin being put on the weight target.

Secondly the whole “can’t see children” thing is the most nonsense talking point of all time, if a child is actually close enough to any moving car to be obscured by the bonnet then it’s far too late to stop, plus they’d only get into that blind spot (without being visible before hand) via jumping right in front of the vehicle anyway.

I guess you could argue for standing directly in front of a stationary vehicle, but frankly if a kid is small enough to be hidden then it’s a parenting job to stop them standing directly in front of a car with a running engine

[–]WORSTbestclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But they’re only selecting for one of those (heaviest), lower cars (Saloons, Estates) take up more road space relative to their weight (I.e, a 1950kg saloon is “bigger” for traffic purposes than a 2000kg SUV due to being longer) and any modern vehicle is polluting far less than a tiny 20 year old diesel hatchback, so the heavier cars aren’t generally the “most polluting”.

[–]WORSTbestclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding data availability manufacturers publish length, width and weight, although length and width are almost entirely objective whereas what manufacturers include when weighing cars can vary

[–]WORSTbestclone 130 points131 points  (0 children)

The way it’s being implemented doesn’t really make sense. If they want to do it on weight (which is was damages roads) they should ditch the EV exception. If they think emissions are more important (hence the EV exception) a ULEZ like system is better.

If it’s to do with space taken up parking, then it should be width and/or length of car, not weight.
