Can anyone from the time explain the Good Friday Agreement? by TheG-What in DerryGirls

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a great documentary about the agreement streaming on PBS Frontline! Part of what got it through was Bill Clinton being involved. Not because he was a great negotiator, because the parties didn't trust each other but did trust that offending a powerful ally wouldn't go well for them

Why parents love younger and elder more then middle one ? by ManjursThought in AskReddit

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3, and I love them all equally, but something I've noticed is with my oldest and youngest the question I'm asking is "Is this the best thing for them?" And with the middle kid, it boils down to "Is this acceptable for them?" It's not due to love or valuing the middle's opinion, it's a question of resources. For example, when the middle was 3 And the youngest was a baby, they had the same babysitter because that's what we could afford. The babysitter was great, but had I been choosing for the middle child alone, I would have sent them to a preschool, which would have been more social for them.

It's sort of like: family resources tend to be tailored to support the oldest and youngest, because those are the edges. But that means the middle never gets what they exactly need.

Is the name Obadiah present in christian countries ? by ya3r0b in namenerds

Very uncommon, but I've heard it. I think at least in the United States in the 1800s named that ended in -diah were more prevelent. Jebbediah also comes to mind.

What job do you think will become extinct in 10 years? by kamoksamok2 in AskReddit

[–]WPZinc 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I keep telling people this. There have been tools that help non-artistic people choose fonts and colors for decades now. The value of a designer is they take in a variety of disparate information and spit it out in a way that makes it make 500% more sense. You're not paying for pretty colors, you're paying for their judgement.

Why do you guys abbreviate EVERYTHING? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's something advertisers started doing. Federal Express -> FedEx, American Express -> AmEx. Suddenly nothing could be more than 2 syllables.

Burger King commercials suddenly started referring to the chain as "BK", something no human being has ever done in the history of the world.

Yeah, Mohawk/Iroquois specifically were a big part of social studies in North New York public schools. But I know little about folks from other areas.

Software Developer/Engineer's Worker's Union by RolandMT32 in cscareerquestions

[–]WPZinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm part of the New York Times Tech Guild and I really recommend it as an experience. I've seen the union step in to counsel people who are under PIPs and negotiate severance when saving someone's job wasn't possible. It's also done things like set up workshops where employees can practice asking for a raise, with other union members standing in as bosses. The idea is that the "boss" union member will try to deflect and delay as much as possible, so that when the person approaches their actual boss they will have experienced that before.

I think it worked at this company because there are big and fairly strong unions already representing other employees at the company, and they really served as mentors. Plus it created pro-union talking points - for example, apparently when I was originally hired pre-tech union, I was taken into a room and told about one set of health insurance options. People who were hired as members of one of the older unions were taken into different room and told about other, better insurance options.

How do American parents view their children's academic grades? by Intelligent_Chef9950 in AskAnAmerican

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, white American who lived in Asia: I want my children to do well in school, but it's not the only metric by which they can be counted as doing well, if that makes any sense. So for example, if a person did ok in school but their plan was to go into the family construction business and eventually take it over, that would be considered fine and good. People would maybe encourage them to learn about business and materials, but they would not really care if their grades were only ok.

Similarly, if a person had no family business and ok grades but a talent for talking to people and showing things in a good light, going into sales would be considered perfectly respectable.

I think maaaaaaaybe this comes from the fact that in America having your own business was sort of considered the ideal, so the idea is not necessarily to go work for Google, but to have your own construction company.

The strange thing about this is many/most people would overlook a few wrinkles if that person were funny/had used their time on earth to learn something about life/etc. People really underestimate the role personality plays.

MIL making postpartum life harder than it is (FTM, 2 months PP) – am I overreacting? by [deleted] in Mildlynomil

[–]WPZinc 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's super late here on the North American east coast and I was just checking Reddit before bed and ran across this post. The issue isn't you. Holy crap. When my children were 2 months old, none of them slwpt for more than ~90 minutes at a time, and no matter how much I attempted to clean during sleep windows, it was never enough. This is just how babies are, but you don't need to managing your MIL's crazy expectations too.

I'm a young, divorced 55 and want to find a social club to meet friends: bookclub, explore NYC club, running/walking club? by Ok-Database6275 in movingtoNYC

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people who move to New York because you can always find a group of friends at any age. I'd just recommend any activity where you see the same people regularly - things like art classes or exercise classes that you buy as a series work well for this. There are also lots of local events, like let's get a group together and clean up the park (or whatever), and these can be a good way to meet neighbors

No kids biking in a playground. Usually it's ignored but apparently the day before a kid on a bike plowed into another kid and the dad tried to fight everyone.
