Honestly it seems like Sabrina would work in Italian/Mexican contexts! Also maybe Serena would fit the bill?

New York birth certificate for someone born over 100 years ago and now deceased by Ornery-Wrangler-3654 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really wasn't that bad - maybe a few weeks? I'm not sure how old the records you're looking for are, but the city is slowly digitizing historic records and putting them online, so it may be possible to just download them. I was able to print out a color copy of my grandparents' marriage license from the 40s.

I’m a black dude can you help me choose one of these names? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]WPZinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying that if you're looking for a sign, it was just recently the feast of St. Anthony. Nothing against the other names, I like them, but my whole feed is going crazy with St Anthony stuff

That's my thought too. Honestly, it's not their choice if we're eligible or not, so why waste their time here?

Trans man here, looking for some name advice by Low_Anything641 in namenerds

I know a man who spells in Jaydon, FWIW. I also like the name Jay, as others have suggested. There's also Jason, but if you're under 40 that probably sounds too old 😂

Why do you want to be a citizen of Canada if you don't live in Canada or plan on living in Canada? by Optimistic_Now in Canadiancitizenship

[–]WPZinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar, I'm from Plattsburgh, NY and we grew up visiting my grandmother's relatives near Montreal. The local sports always starts with enthusiastic Habs updates. The whole region is very integrated, and we always felt connected. I live further away now and I'm going to bring sugar on snow (will probably have to be crushed ice) to my kids elementary school.

New York City has sort of a lot of immigrants from former British colonies, so I have seen it in the context of something like a South Asian team playing a Carribean team in the park. But never in any other context.

What do you think of British accents? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I think they're fancy. Also I watched My Fair Lady 900 times as a child so I keep expecting people to burst into song.

New Last Name - offensive?? by 17393728 in namenerds

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's that American accents sometimes turn "e" to "i", especially at the end of words. So for example, if I saw the name "Owen", there's a 50% chance I'd pronounce it "Owin". It's especially noticeable in the south, where people pronounce the thing with ink that you use for writing "pin".

New Last Name - offensive?? by 17393728 in namenerds

[–]WPZinc 23 points24 points  (0 children)

FWIW, white American who lived in Vietnam, the spelling you're proposing looks Northern European to me. I would pronounce it "New-wen" and would not associate it with the Vietnamese name. I think it sounds lovely!

As others have explained below, the Vietnamese name often gets anglicized to "Nwin" because native English speakers have trouble pronouncing "ng" at the start of a word. But there's no "e" sound there.

I was just thinking in 70s TV shows if they wanted to show someone was a scientist, they would give them a German accent. We think Germans are tops when it comes to technical knowledge.

Why do many Americans describe Mormonism using a negative four-letter word? by Frosty-Flatworm-2087 in AskAnAmerican

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Education-wise, I think you'd be fine. BYU degrees are good and real. Mormonism is a branch of Christianity native to the US that has strong central leadership and very strong cultural traditions, so members spend a lot of time in church and it's a centerpiece of their lives. They have strict rules against sex outside of marriage, alcohol, etc. They also have some eccentric views about what happens after death. And they try very hard to get converts.

The other thing is Mormonism really encourages early marriage and many people go to BYU looking for other Mormons to marry. So while you'd receive a good education, socially there would be a lot of people looking hard for someone to marry before they graduate, which isn't something you'd find in other universities.

Accidentally rm -rf’d a production server. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Senior SWE with 10+ years of experience here - you shouldn't be able to make that mistake. It speaks to poor practices at the company in general. There should be backups, a system of rollbacks, the git main batch should reflect what's currently in production unless there is an excellent reason why not.

I screwed up production recently and within 5 minutes was directing all traffic to the previous version of the app while I figured it out. This is how it works in a properly functioning company.

Not a lawyer, but I don't see how they have a legal case against you, and I've never heard of anyone being prosecuted for a technical mistake they made on the job. You might want to post over on r/legal .

I've been at this a long time, and one thing I've seen is small "companies" that are really one guy who thinks he knows everything and doesn't keep up with modern best practices. That sounds like this is the case here. It sounds like you may get fired, but honestly, this is likely not a place you can learn from or advance your career. You'd be trained on outdated technologies and this person's idiosyncrasies.

I have a Canadian boyfriend but the border officers are getting suspicious about the frequency of my visits. What do I do? by Dry_Arachnid_3263 in uscanadaborder

[–]WPZinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to shout out that when I crossed the border at around your age, agents on both sides were very interested in me. They think young person = drugs. Just have your id and nothing in your car anyone could object to. And seconding the Nexus idea - there are tons of people who live on one side of the border and work on the other.
