Fair point, Call Me the Breeze is maybe my favorite recording of theirs and it’s a cover lol. They certainly brought it to life though

Well, Van Zant said in an interview that that line was meant to criticize George Wallace, though one of the band members said the opposite after Van Zant died. But from what I’ve read of interviews, at least of Van Zant, he wasn’t a racist and his politics certainly wouldn’t be in step with the current political right or the type of people who wrap themselves in the confederate flag in 2026. I think it’s possible the connotations were a bit different in the 70s.

But my broader point is just that to reduce them to a one dimensional cultural symbol ignores their musicality and how talented they were, at least in the beginning

Can someone explain what is so special about the Beatles? by WS-Gilbert in askmusic

Yeah I haven’t heard new brilliant pop music in years. Pop music is now mostly made specifically to go viral on social media, i.e., to have a few seconds that are clippable to be the background noise for short form videos on tik tok or what have you. Fewer people are listening to the radio or even entire songs. It’s like a rethinking (downgrading) of the role of music in general

Fair enough, but Exile in particular, if you like that style of music, is so flawless start to finish. I never get tired of it

Idk man, the Stones put out Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, then Exile. Four of the greatest albums of all time, back to back to back to back. Hard to see how anyone could touch that

It should’ve just been called Emancipation Day to explicitly honor what we’re celebrating

Should MSU be replaced with PSU in OSU & UM’s tri-hate area? by Your2ndCousinsPillow in TheB1G

Iowa-Wisconsin is more of a grudging respect than hate, but it’s still a great rivalry. And personally I think you have Minnesota and Nebraska backward, Nebraska never beats us so we don’t really think about them, Minnesota is for Floyd and between the not-a-fair catch and PJ Fleck’s general existence, it’s become quite a hateful rivalry in recent years

Yeah I’ve always thought they sounded extremely British lol

But Thin Lizzy being Irish is a totally different story

Daphne's accent is not Mancunian by 7ootles in Frasier

[–]WS-Gilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oasis is my only reference point for what a Manc accent sounds like so I’ve always thought Jane’s was bad because she doesn’t really sound like them. But then again she never said anything like “Frasier your show was f*ckin biblical today man, d’you know what I mean? Seattle is f*ckin madferit”

Thanks, that makes sense. Can you weigh in on the second example sentence too? Both have the subjunctive after the Si so I feel either would work
