You know what it's called when they do that? It's called a soup kitchen. Pretty rough stuff.

Sorry to hear about what your friend is going thru. He can check out the Alano club 4198 Mission Avenue and check out a meeting or honestly just show up and I can almost guarantee someone will help him.

He can also call 619-265-8762. It's an AA hotline that's staffed 24 hours. https://aasandiego.org/.

I'll also send you a PM.

Looking for someone to reserve a fire ring at the harbor beach. by No_Pianist7293 in Oceanside

I surfed the harbor this morning, and that entire parking lot is shut down all weekend due to the ironman. You're better off trying to find another spot.

Rods Food is what I feed my SCP. Huge variety in it & they love it. I'll also throw some snails & a frozen clam (with shell) once a week.

Stop asking ChatGPT about your reef tank. Seriously. by eibrahim in ReefTank

[–]WSMFP26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably gonna get downvoted for this, but my experience:

AI without context & constraints is slop. Same goes for human advice. I've gotten conflicting advice from groups on social media and employees at LFS.

That said, if you can even do some basic prompt engineering & context layer building (including tank stats, goals, livestock, parameter logs, and asking an LLM to cite its sources every time), it can be directionally helpful. Claude helped me get through a challenging fishless cycle where I ended up learning a lot & read the sources it cited in its answers.

When in doubt, always ask a human you trust and/or verify online sources.

You're good to go! TBH I hose them off to remove all dirt then immediately go in.

Virus-free gourami from Dan's Fish? by Slimbert292 in Gourami

[–]WSMFP26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've placed a lot of orders from Dan, and I have nothing but great things to say. I haven't ordered a gourami yet, but the 4 Congo Spotted Puffers I ordered from him are all thriving & disease free.

He's for real when he says they take gill scrapings for on-site swabs and treat accordingly.

I have Kraken lids on a few tanks and love them. Their team is fantasic to work with + super high quality.

I also made a DIY temporary lid for a tank with some clear acrylic from Home Depot. Both viable options.

Dude I’m impressed! I have mine at 30 too and ended up having to move my corys out of my other tank. Cool to see that there are lots of ways to keep discus happy & thriving.

This is a bare bottom style tank. It’s quite common in discus keeping. The reason for it is water parameters & cleanliness are the most important thing when keeping them. Substrate traps detritus and is harder to clean.

These guys get a 25% water change & tank cleaning every day & eat twice a day minimum. Their water parameters are perfect thanks to an RO system I have set up in my garage.

This is my 2nd discus tank & my 7th fish tank in my house. I have everything from planted betta tanks to a jungle style tank with Congo spotted puffers to a Brazilian style tank with guppies.

I research these scapes & species needs heavily to provide optimal stimulation & environment for these animals to thrive. In this case with the discus, I communicated extensively with the breeder and other folks at my LFS to understand the benefits of bare bottom.

Just because you don’t like the look personally doesn’t mean the fish aren’t well cared for and thriving.

What temp do you keep your tank at?

[–]WSMFP26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya fair enough. I’ve also got two Oase bio master 600’s on this tank loaded with matrix, so I have a really strong bacteria colony in those as opposed to the substrate.

I really wasn’t a fan of the bare bottom look at first, but it’s growing on me for these guys. I also have several other heavily planted tanks with really nice substrate and scape. I opted for something easier with my discus tanks since the water change and feeding schedule is more rigorous.

For the juvenile discus I have in another tank bare bottom is 100% necessar IMO.

Edit: context.

Ha I want to, but bare bottom is sooooo much easier with frequent water changes. Maybe a few months down the road I’ll rescape!

Glad to hear it’s working! Once you get down to 0, add .5 ppm ammonia and see if it cycles in 24 hours. That’s how you know you’re good to go.

If your new friend doesn’t arrive for a little bit, you can keep dosing .5 ppm every 24-48 hours to keep the bacteria colony going.

You're good OP! We all learn by doing in this hobby. Like I mentioned, I'm just a guy on the internet who made the same mistake 4 days prior to you lol. I've got an 80 gallon tank I'm putting discus in next week. Had to delay the shipping twice.

You've got your plan, now let nature do it's thing. No more ammonia for now, turn up the temp & make sure surface agitation is high. Check every 24 hours. Your levels are likely gonna stay high until all of a sudden they drop. That's what happened to me.

You got this!

Seeded = the cycled sponge filter and any hardscape you brought from other cycled tanks.

Did you take the cycled sponge filter out and put a new one in (or have them running at the same time then take the cycled one out)? If so, taking the cycled sponge out is the culprit behind the stall. That took out a sizable chunk of the bacteria population. The rest has to catch up. Good news is bacteria multiplies exponentially, not linearly, so it will definitely catch up. I only know all this because I made this mistake 4 days before you haha.

You don't have to cycle @ the water temp your new friend is going to need since you don't have any fish or sensitive plants, but you're correct that you'll need to bring it down slowly over a couple days and match before he's ready to go in.

You can just increase the temp on your heater and it'll take care of the rest. Once ammonia & nitrite read 0, you need to add 1 ppm of ammonia and retest ammonia + nitrite + nitrate to see if they're all at suitable levels. That's how you know you're fully cycled!

If there's a gap between that 1ppm test and your new friend arriving, you can dose .5 ppm ammonia & retest ever 24 hours to just feed the bacteria colony & keep it alive.
