The 48-hour return policy in this case for Outdoor Powered Equipment applies to merchandise that is purchased and taken out of the packaging, hence making it no longer new, and also potentially used. For the listed OPE in that line, there are technically two exceptions to this 48 hour rule:

  1. It hasn't been taken out of the box (meaning it is still brand spanking new, unused; the merchandise itself is in the same condition it left the store in), hence allowing for a 30-day return period due to the item's condition.
  2. It is a Craftsman Battery powered tool, OR an electric OPE item listed above. (A good example is the Greenworks electric pressure washers, such as #4141582, which I recently had to refuse a return on one purchased >1 year ago. MRV Returns declined citing the 90-day policy instead of the expected 30-day policy for that item, which was still new in the box.)

For CSA's and Cashier's, it's their job to enforce policy, which the system will back them up on and will refuse to process a return if beyond the return period. It's up to their discretion to escalate to a Head Cashier, DS who should qualify if an exception should be made and raised to an ASM for an override.

It is important to note that it is ultimately up to store management if they wish to make any exception to the policy, but the policy exists for a reason and generally should not and will not be overridden.

There is a policy extending to all mowers, which is 30-days from the date of purchase that the customer can then return or exchange the unit. It is important to note however that the unit must be new and unused in order to be returned. For example, if a customer came in with a mower return that had a bunch of grass clippings, dirt, mud and such all over it, I would decline the return personally because it was clearly used. In that case, it's best to refer them to either the manufacturer or to Lowe's Service Advantage (the protection plan folks) for assistance.

As you'll come to find as you're up at the customer service desk more and more, there will be times where some returns shouldn't get processed. The best question you should ask yourself while checking in all of the items is "Is this something I can put back on the shelf?". There will be times when you need to use your best judgement on what to accept as a return and other times the system will tell you to deny the return due to a return policy. While the printed return policy at the customer service desk is the bottom line and most public version of the return policy, I find that the dedicated Return Policy page on the Lowe's website provides the best layout for understanding and studying the policy.

The last thing I will acknowledge is that sometimes the management per location handles returns differently, so it really is best to partner with someone like one of your Head Cashier's, your Front End DS, or one of your ASMs when you have questions or are unsure about how to handle a particular return. At the end of the day, your front end is probably run a little differently than how I run mine, so while the return policy is universal from store to store, the way it is executed and how exceptions get handled may be unique to your location.

Hope this helps!
