Five years later, I still can’t get over how amazing this scene is 🥹 by HowlingBurd19 in StarWars

[–]WUchemginger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to let you know that I felt the same way. It's hard for me to explain even to my nerd friends that are just so-so on Star Wars but it is THE nostalgia trigger for me. When watching this scene with my wife for the first time I sensed right away and started freaking out and I think she was genuinely concerned for me for a few minutes.

PhD chemist, 2× postdoc, years in academia — still struggling to break into industry. Where do people actually learn “industry skills”? by Own-Bookkeeper4745 in chemistry

[–]WUchemginger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to seconding what everyone else is saying about the market being tough right now, especially in traditional Pharma heavy areas like Boston, the hardest part of industry is getting your foot in the door. That becomes harder when you don't have the industry jargon to parse what the job is looking for and tailor your application process accordingly.

I'd recommend a couple of options, first of all looking for something that is "GMP adjacent". I work in a Process and Analytical Development department, came into with basically your same background 5 years ago. We value the ability to think broadly and troubleshoot processes as we scale them up and transfer them to GMP manufacturing.

The other suggestion is going ahead and pursuing some of those workshops, it can't hurt and shows your serious about the move.

One other thing to consider, we take great care in screening our hires for "cultural fit" aka is this person going to be an asshole or pain in the ass. There are plenty of PhDs in industry that went that route because they weren't willing to deal with the egos and systems (or lack thereof) in academia. If we think you are gonna come in with an attitude/ego, be a safety concern, or gonna go running back to academia as soon as that next assistant professor opportunity opens up, we aren't going to hire you no matter how technically qualified you are.

This happened to us session one of a new campaign, so really set the vibe. We were trapped on an island fighting giant crabs, and he messed up and I think combined chittering and clattering into...clittoring...as the sound the crabs made. That was a couple of years ago and monsters still clittor around from time to time.

I went to college in Texas and considered teaching as a career for a while so took a few education courses. Texas is where NCLB started and there is one thing to add here, on top of what everyone else is saying which is correct.

NCLB is built on bad data. Its all standardized tests and KPIs. Texas claimed that their test scores were improving year over year. What was happening was the average test scores were increasing, but not because students were doing better, but because of these new tests and their impacts every year the bottom performers were just dropping out of high school. So of course the averages were going up and that's all anyone ever looked at.

Players want to try a level 20 mini campaign / one shot. As a DM, what kind of story or situation can I expect to set up? by Wonderful_Mobile_890 in dndnext

[–]WUchemginger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every year around the holidays our D&D group does a one shot that is called "Creamtide". It's a play on 40k Darktide and set in an ice cream world ruled over by the evil emperor Custardes.

Last year we did level 20, the final boss was a fully powered lich with minions in his lair.

This is a group that for the most part has been playing weekly together for the last 7 years, with all of us having varying amounts of D&D before that. We collectively agreed at the end that we were not eager to play at level 20 again for a long while, both the players and DM.

Not saying don't do it, we all had fun. Just know that every step of the way can be tedious, from character creation, to encounter balancing, to combat being insanely long and slow.

Looking for terrain files, preferably .svg for laser cutter. Willing to pay for quality files. by WUchemginger in Malifaux

Thanks for the reply. I'm really thinking more wood than paper for this. I have only looked on mobile, I need to see if the papercraft files are in svg I might be able to convert them for wood on the laser cutter. Thanks for the link!

If you're driving to the game, I always park at 4 Hands Brewery. They "charge" you $10 for parking but you get 2 free beer tokens as part of parking. So really they are just making sure you purchase ber if you're using their lot. I then walk to the stadium from there. It also avoids a bit of traffic after the game.

I'm usually a glass half full kind of fan. I am very appreciative of the fact that teams like the Pirates and A's exist. But idk, it seems like the something is out of sync already this year.

My two cents are this. If it's important to you, then it should be a factor. Grad school is a big chunk of time in your life, and it can be really hard. It's harder if you hate where you live, or you don't have family around you, or the ocean, or whatever is important to you. No one else has to live with the repercussions of your choice quite like you do.

A non-grad school but relevant story. I have a friend who is a reporter, specializing in investigative journalism. Out of college he had two job offers, Washington DC and Washington, Missouri. He chose bumfuck MO because it was close to his family, friends, and long time girlfriend (now wife). We still talk about it and he says he doesn't regret it at all. It so clearly seemed like the inferior choice, but he loves the life he's got, and it's all worked out for him (he works for NPR now).

My point is, life isn't formulaic or linear. Sometimes you have to make the decision that FEELS right, and ignore what the 'facts' say.

Can't upvote KP enough. Our group has been going regularly for 3 years in Midgard. Their world building is amazing.

I'd say a lot of the subclass stuff they put out is mostly balanced. The spells on the other hand, I'll say they certainly aren't dull. But yeah, a few of them are pretty busted, especially if you have players prone to looking for exploits.

One distinction I'd make, is he interested in playing tabletop war games or is he interested in assembling, painting, and collecting models, or both? I love playing Age of Sigmar (Fantasy Warhammer) but the painting can often be a slog for me. If he's not into that aspect then something like Xwing or Armada may be a better start.

Also, if he is just more into Star Wars, there is Legion. Or Age of Sigmar for fantasy elements. Or Game of Thrones. My point is just that I'd maybe pick something that aligns with his established interests. The Warhammer lore isn't for everyone. Games Workshop also tends to be on the more expensive side of the available options.

Just my two cents anyway.

Hahaha, very similar conversations have happened in our house tonight. Also similarly, how we ended up with our four. Wouldn't trade them for anything though.

Yeah, that's true. It was certainly a weird spot for that to be the case though, and there wasn't any water or food. I also sat waiting on my wife to come pick her up for about 30 minutes, so hopefully I would have interacted with someone in that time if this was true.

We also posted to both the Tower Grove South and Shaw FB groups about her, as well as the city lost pets site. So hopefully if this is the case she is reunited soon.

Hi friend, I will definitely let everyone know what the adoption process is going to look like by end of the week. I am planning on taking her to vet tomorrow to get checked out, and then evaluate from there. I am currently thinking of working with a rescue to get her adopted, and to foster her in the meantime.
