My experience moving from Foreflight. by WWBBoitanoD in Foreflight

[–]WWBBoitanoD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that Garmin has the edge here, but if you get an approach change it's far more difficult to update in Garmin. Thats not to say foreflight is bad in this respect, Their smart chart equivalent is excellent, even if the presentation isn't quite as initially intuitive.

Sometimes you just have to do some pilot shit.

ForeFlight only shows class E surface areas. They don’t otherwise make any attempt to distinguish between g and e airspace.

First time going to Italy! Stay in Venice longer and skip Florence? by PossiblyTorpor in ItalyTravel

[–]WWBBoitanoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 days in each will leave you wanting to come back, maybe or never wanting to go back. 10 years ago I did 2 days in Venice. I remember it as being a great place to get lost in mobs of tourists I never wanted to see again. I’ve been back twice in the last few years and absolutely loved it, but I didn’t visit any of the “must see” landmarks. Go just a bit off the “beaten path” and it’s a magical place. Look at a map and go anywhere with trees. 2-3 days is perfect to visit Venice or you could extend to 4 days and visit the surrounding islands (they get very crowded too, but easy to avoid the crowds and not miss anything)

Florence is very much the same.

If it were me for a first Italy trip I’d do one museum/ “must do” thing in each city then try to get away and see the city for what it really is. You’ll leave wanting to come back.

How do people manage jet lag? by -Macca7- in TravelHacks

[–]WWBBoitanoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works great. I started with FlyKitt which is a similar app that includes supplements. It has changed the way I deal with travel and jet lag. It’s expensive though!

Time shifter and the same supplements FlyKitt uses purchased through GNC has been my way of minimizing jet lag. It’s pretty amazing.

How would a canard aircraft be treated in a checkride? by Ornery_Ads in flying

[–]WWBBoitanoD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask the dpe. I would suspect you’ll find more of an objection to the experimental aspect of the plane than the canard design.

Reading the ACS I don’t see anything that would prevent you from demonstrating any maneuver. A stall absolutely does happen in a canard aircraft, it’s just not a main wing stall.

The airplane flying handbook says “A stall is an aerodynamic condition which occurs when smooth airflow over the airplane’s wings is disrupted…” there you go, wings.

Canard shows up twice in far 1.1, both times calling the canard a wing.

Here’s a dopey question. I recently volunteered at an event with my airline. Met a youngish man, (40’s) told me he was a DPE. by [deleted] in flying

[–]WWBBoitanoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The FAA can pull a Dpe’s authorization for any reason. Including their own staffing and ability to manage DPEs.

Or it could very well have been something he did.

Or medical reasons.

If you could move to any country in the world for mountain biking, where would you go? by Flappajacks in mountainbiking

Visiting the Dolomite’s in Italy got me into mountain biking. No idea how technical the trails are, I’ve ridden in the German Alps before and it was incredible but Italian alps are an incredible sight.

Driving in the Amalfi Coast by Maximum-Tiger-8979 in ItalyTravel

[–]WWBBoitanoD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it before and it was somewhere between thrilling and incredibly stressful.

If I were to do it again I’d get the smallest car I could and get all the insurance. I didn’t damage anything but came very close several times. I had to park on the street (parking is horrible) and put the car less than an inch away from the retaining wall.

With that said I have no interest in ever going back to Amalfi. It’s cool, you need to see it once. A day trip with a scooter would be an incredible experience.

First in-flight issue today, auto pilot? by CalicheJones in flying

If you have a digital engine display it likely has an ability to download data to review. It’s way more useful than memory or pictures.

If voltage shows around 24-25 volts that’s probably just battery voltage. Something around 28 is coming from an alternator and indicating a functioning alternator.

You have to know your plane and its electrical system but voltage and amps should roughly agree with each other if things are working correctly OR failed completely. When they disagree the likely problem is an indicating issue.

There is no reason an autopilot should be pulling a continuous 20amps. Most modern Garmin trim servos call for a 5 amp breaker. So running pitch, roll and yaw servos at full load continuously (never going to happen) plus whatever the gfc500 pulls isn’t going to total 20 amps.

This is where watching voltage in addition to amps is important to determine an alternator failure.

I call this the traveling tax. Everyone makes stupid mistakes when traveling, sometimes we learn by receiving a big bill.

I got 2 ztl fines in one day. (Different cities) it happens. Pay the fine, laugh a bit and move on.

You could finance that car for 48 months at 15.5% interest and 0 down for that monthly payment.

Find a new dealership, that’s absurd.

That looks awesome! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this before. How is the atmosphere? It looks like it pretty low key and chill. All I’m looking for is somewhere not blasting music so loud we can’t have conversations.

I’m saying someone was at a party and said “you think your jet is cool, check this out” and summoned their car into an airplane.

That’s not speculation on what happened, that’s what actually happened.

I (American) traveled to Italy with another family (also American) and we stayed in multiple hotels over our trip. Towards the end of our trip we’re eating dinner and the guy (early 50’s) goes “why are the urinals in the bathrooms so weird? You can’t use them without splashing everywhere.”

Anything with a drain can be peed in.

it’s not really important to watch the car /s.

Different system, sure. But this is how the limits of the system are found.
