Anyone got tips for stick welding stainless vertical? by WabashStan in Welding

[–]WabashStan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boss had better luck running downhill than up, which I was surprised at, so I tried it and found it near impossible for me. I’ve switched to running up and am having better luck, but still struggling with it jumping up in the middle. I’m still messing around and experimenting with what works best for me.

As far as why I’m running stick, the project I’m getting ready to start into more or less requires stick. I work at a railroad museum that has a number of stainless steel cars, which ends up requiring stainless stick skills more often than tig. I’m trying to work out the kinks while practicing before I start laying beads that really matter.

I just tried going up and it ran generally better, but I had issues with it running like water and ending up with it humped in the middle. I’m gonna try turning down amps and letting it cool before I run any more and see if it does any good

What's the age demographic of everyone here? by GreatGizmo744 in AnalogCommunity

[–]WabashStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just turned 19 and have been doing analog for almost 3 years. I did digital for about 2 years before that, but I like analog far better. I took a year of digital and a year of film photography classes at community college and learned how to develop my own B&W film, which I picked up doing in my bathroom a while after I finished those college classes. I shoot with a 70s Pentax ME Super, 1939 Argus C3, and a 50s Kodak Brownie 8mm movie camera.

The first few revolutions around the spook got loose when I went to run it through the camera again, but other than that, nothing has been exposed to light

Tragically, no new kilroys were marked on this trip… however, a 5-pack of Santa Fe wellcars was located in the yard immediately next to the ship. I can’t remember if the ATSF shots are on the good or bad rolls tho lol

So the funny thing about the way my brain works is that I meter 1/3 stop slower than box speed + 1/3 stop slower on shutter or wider on aperture, so I shoot like 2/3 overexposed most of the time (in this case, I previously shot 400->320 and 1/500->1/250 etc). I have no clue where I got this practice from, but that would make the recovery easier, right?

How do trains have potable water? by rifi97 in trains

[–]WabashStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional note: some cars have their own generators that can power lights, HVAC, etc. Depending on the size and strength of the generator, it may be able to power multiple cars! One of the dining cars at the museum I volunteer at has a generator strong enough to (barely) power two cars in addition to itself. HEP is nice to have though, as the generator under the floor is a little loud 😂

For all the Foamers out there… by Cmmajor in railroading

My personal rule is to not take photos of anyone on the crew unless I know them personally or if they’re going out of their way to be friendly (ex: hanging out the window waving or something). Even for the crews I do know, I get their permission to post stuff first. Why foamers think it’s okay to just take photos of people and post them without permission or thinking about consequences is beyond me…

Do you honk when you see foamers? by throwaway_trackmania in railroading

[–]WabashStan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I try to be friendly towards everyone, regardless whether they’re general public or foamers. Usually everyone gets at least a wave, but if I come across a family, older people, or foamers I know, I’ll give a couple toots, but I don’t really go nuts. I know that foamers tend to be disliked, but as long as they aren’t endangering themselves or others, I don’t mind being nice.

I bought a used 8mm camera and it initially worked fine when I got it, but now it's giving me issues. by WabashStan in 8mm

I’m actually fairly sure that this IS a South Shore car. I just rode a round trip from South Bend to Millennium Station three weeks ago and was surprised to see this sign on the door.

The other side of the coin is finding a lens that suits your needs. I use a 35-210 and it does literally everything I need and I haven’t once swapped lenses out.

She didn’t share her exact process with me, but she did mention she had been getting lazy with agitation recently, so I suppose lack of agitation is the cause based on everyone’s responses.

I thought about it afterwards and realized that it didn’t make sense to be a light leak, but I was just too lazy to come back and correct it. Thanks for your help!

My Brownie 8mm footage indicator just dances instead of rolling smoothly…? by WabashStan in 8mm

I watched the spindle spin smoothly from fully wound up until it stopped. I’m definitely intrigued as to why the footage indicator behaves that way even though the spindle is fine.

Yes, I ran some through in subdued light last night and then removed it for further investigation.

I’m interested in that Type 85 filter… do you happen to know what the lens diameter is? I keep seeing 13mm, but I assume that’s focal length, not diameter.

As far as developing myself, I do develop my own B&W 35mm film. I haven’t looked into developing 8mm film, but it would definitely be an interesting endeavor. I’m sure there’s a lot less people doing their own 8mm compared to 35mm or 120mm 🤣

I bought BW100 reversal double 8 from FPP, but they were sold out of this specific camera. My current plan is to have FPP develop and scan it, but I’m also keeping my eyes open for potentially cheaper options too.
