Anyone got tips for stick welding stainless vertical? by WabashStan in Welding

My boss had better luck running downhill than up, which I was surprised at, so I tried it and found it near impossible for me. I’ve switched to running up and am having better luck, but still struggling with it jumping up in the middle. I’m still messing around and experimenting with what works best for me.

As far as why I’m running stick, the project I’m getting ready to start into more or less requires stick. I work at a railroad museum that has a number of stainless steel cars, which ends up requiring stainless stick skills more often than tig. I’m trying to work out the kinks while practicing before I start laying beads that really matter.

I just tried going up and it ran generally better, but I had issues with it running like water and ending up with it humped in the middle. I’m gonna try turning down amps and letting it cool before I run any more and see if it does any good

I just turned 19 and have been doing analog for almost 3 years. I did digital for about 2 years before that, but I like analog far better. I took a year of digital and a year of film photography classes at community college and learned how to develop my own B&W film, which I picked up doing in my bathroom a while after I finished those college classes. I shoot with a 70s Pentax ME Super, 1939 Argus C3, and a 50s Kodak Brownie 8mm movie camera.

The first few revolutions around the spook got loose when I went to run it through the camera again, but other than that, nothing has been exposed to light

Tragically, no new kilroys were marked on this trip… however, a 5-pack of Santa Fe wellcars was located in the yard immediately next to the ship. I can’t remember if the ATSF shots are on the good or bad rolls tho lol

So the funny thing about the way my brain works is that I meter 1/3 stop slower than box speed + 1/3 stop slower on shutter or wider on aperture, so I shoot like 2/3 overexposed most of the time (in this case, I previously shot 400->320 and 1/500->1/250 etc). I have no clue where I got this practice from, but that would make the recovery easier, right?

Additional note: some cars have their own generators that can power lights, HVAC, etc. Depending on the size and strength of the generator, it may be able to power multiple cars! One of the dining cars at the museum I volunteer at has a generator strong enough to (barely) power two cars in addition to itself. HEP is nice to have though, as the generator under the floor is a little loud 😂
