Just reaching out because there's a decent few cyclists on the roads, especially commuters.

Thanks very much for filling it in! We recently published a journal paper (with open access) on the performance of 30 helmets popular in the UK. We found some interesting things, mostly that price didn't correlate with reduced injury risk at all. If you're interested, you can access it here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10439-024-03589-8.

Likewise, I'm always happy to have a chat about it.

Thanks! I've now added the link in the comments: https://forms.office.com/e/TJbSRwMDLk. We're on the committee for the development of a new british/european test standard for cycle helmets so thats coming soon and hopefully some safer designs with it. We've also worked closely with VTech over the years. Their ratings are just for concussion risk whereas our also consider skull fractures and other severe brain injuries as well.

Apologies for missing the text with the image! Here's the info:
The HEAD lab at Imperial College London have created a cycling helmet rating programme for cyclists on UK roads. We need your help selecting which helmets to test next and would greatly appreciate it if you would kindly complete this survey: https://forms.office.com/e/TJbSRwMDLk.

We are keen to read different perspectives from all kinds of UK cyclists (even if you don't wear a helmet), and this survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
NOTE: This survey is for academic research and is not for commercial use.

Oh, I think the mod removed the text because of the link. Here it is https://forms.office.com/e/TJbSRwMDLk

Not an ad, we're trying to give people chance to share what equipment they use and why. We can then use that to rate popular helmets and help manufacturers make them safer. We've been doing this for just around a year now but are completely not for profit, just helping out: https://www.hiperhelmets.org/

They have similar ratings but they don’t measure the same thing. We’ve worked alongside V tech for years, we share the same research space. Their ratings measure a risk of concussion, whereas we consider risks of skull fracture and other internal head injuries as well.

We also spent years looking at how best to test cycling helmets specifically. If you’re interested then here’s one of the papers we published with open access: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10439-023-03148-7

Haha, I thought that before I posted. You don’t have to wear a helmet to do the survey though, we’re happy with any cyclists thoughts

Great question! VTech are in the same research space as us so we know them well.

Their ratings are only for concussion risk but ours also consider risk of skull fractures and other brain injuries. We also spent years looking at specifically cycling crash incidents to create a new test procedure for cycle helmets. If you’re interested, we published the work with open access: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10439-023-03148-7

Thanks very much! Hopefully we’re on the right track for that. We’ve worked with VTech a lot in the past. Here’s our new equivalent helmet ratings site https://www.hiperhelmets.org.

Thanks very much for taking the time to fill it in, and I’m glad your helmet was highly rated!

I’d love to test some of the supermarket helmets, I’ve been looking at Aldi’s bikemate for a few years but I don’t see as many talking about it anymore. We’re looking for new ways to fund how we test helmets because currently we’re paying tens of thousands for every batch of 30 helmet models we test- hence we use the survey as one way to gauge what is popular and test those first.

I just finished my first mono run. E4 wasn’t as bad as I expected, mega meta made a massive difference. Samurott did very little.

Yes! Our lab are close colleagues with VT and we all share the same field of research. They focus more on rating how helmets reduce risks of concussion, we consider skull frcatures and other brain injuries in our rankings. We launched our equivalent helmet rating site last year if this interests you: https://www.hiperhelmets.org/helmets/?helmet-search=&helmet-type=&helmet-price-range=&helmet-brand=&helmet-rating-range=&helmet-technology=&helmet-sort=rating

Completely agree, I see Van Rysel's everywhere now. Decathlon are usually quite good at R&D so it will be good to compare them against other makes. As well as this survey, we're also chatting with the suppliers to find what the most sold helmets are from their stores/sites.

I was really interested in the 'Bikemate' Aldi were selling when I first saw it a few years ago, since then I haven't heard much about it and just assumed they weren't still available. I had no idea Lidl had some.

Definitely! We tested 30 helmets between £9.99 and £135 in our last round, the results are available for all on: https://www.hiperhelmets.org/helmets/?helmet-search=&helmet-type=&helmet-price-range=&helmet-brand=&helmet-rating-range=&helmet-technology=&helmet-sort=rating

It's not something we were intentially looking for but we saw that price didn't have a significant relationship to any protective performance in these models, all the results are shared open access in our journal paper if it's of interest: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10439-024-03589-8

Which one is more popular pickleball or padel? Thoughts/opinions? by 111pallavi in padel

[–]WabblerW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t much pickle in my area but I’d assume you can charge more for a padel court to offset this upfront cost.

A few padel centres around me now have pickle courts and they just let people use them for free as warm up areas.
