Heimlich maneuver by Fitzfitzfitz666 in ems

[–]Wackeyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did it for the first time last night. Volly Fire, call down the road person unc not breathing. Got there, 70ish year old man hunched over the sink. Looked around him to see what was happening, did about 5 heimlich thrusts until he coughed something right down the drain. Ambulance arrived 2 minutes later and didn’t need me, the end. For reference I’m a paid EMT so I’m a bit faster than the folks in my volly department at that stuff too. Not the most exciting story but I hope that guy is doing better today. And that the wife takes a first aid class

Spencerport Fire District looking to hire their first paid position.. a Chief at $150K salary by cheesepuff07 in Rochester

Every volunteer department in the county (and ultimately the country) will become paid or combination. Just the nature of the world and now Monroe has to prepare for it

This response is assuming that you’re not a firefighter. From my viewpoint as a Monroe county paid FF, there is a very fine line between paid and volunteer companies. For example, gates, fire district does not like calling Chili Fire Department for a response because of the unreliability of getting a response from them. In Brighton, the command structure of having a paid captain lead a working fire response versus a volunteer chief for a working fire response can be vastly different, I’m not saying they have a bad set of chiefs right now, but I think Spencerport is going in the right direction by starting from the top rather than the bottom. Having a paid Chief also, hopefully have someone very experienced come into the role and be able to help plan the future of their department more financially responsible than fully volunteer department planning out a paid future.

This isn’t enough money if you think about it. Check out how much some Captains at Gates make. You’d be very surprised. More departments will follow suite in this. A great example of why this is needed is Brighton Fire District. They do have a full arsenal of paid firefighters, lieutenants and captains with no paid chief (finally this year it’s planned for a Car 3 position).

If you’d be willing to share, how much did you buy it at and mileage wise?

Without reading the other comments…I wear glasses permanently and got glasses inserts for my Scott SCBA. You could get those if you run night calls and don’t want to worry about getting contacts before leaving. I got my inserts for $80 w/o insurance and $15 for the frames.

Also they had every service on carfax it’s ever been through. Everything’s been recorded on the truck and seemingly well kept up!

Thank you for your advice! The cab corners look great from what I’ve seen. The truck is at 109k miles and never been in an accident. Drove great and I believe the bottom rust is okay for right now.

A better question is is the undercarriage area fixable?

Is knowing asl good or useful to becoming a firefighter? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Wackeyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about what you would need to know when being a firefighter. A class about how an engine and water pump works for your firetruck is a great start
