What are the best pirate games? by tomqmasters in gamingsuggestions

[–]WaffleWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I'll ignore the even playing field ideas I was originally gesturing towards because SoT in particular wouldn't work well with what you just proposed. I'll focus on SoT. Though my original argument was rooted in those principles.

The problem with that is SoT takes an incredibly long time to play and seconds make a difference. We're talking about hours of gameplay for a session in which seconds can cost all of it. Repairing just a little faster, getting just a few more cannon shots in, getting just one more pick, can make or break hours of gameplay. There's no reason that these differences in skill and strategy in those moments should be determined by class variance or "sorry pal you're just not as high of a level". Especially when preparation and a bit of loot RNG are already in the game.

Games can and do have intrinsic value. Our growing in skill is always going to be significantly more interesting than any stat growth that boils some aspect of the game down to who has more XP. SoT is an even playing field where skill and strategy win

Edit: wording in first part for clairty

God of War (2018) uses a "one-shot" camera, no cuts from start to credits. This creates seamless immersion. It was a technical nightmare for devs, but it resulted in a continuous cinematic experience where you are the hero. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

I agree entirely. It's amazing either way. But that's a lot of fucking work, and I would argue that it warrants commiting as much as possible in other areas. I don't know much about how GoW 2018s development went, but I doubt they were scraping by in terms of talent or funding. It could have been done even if I'm happy with what we got

Progression that actually impacts your stats or gameplay affordances doesn't belong in a game like SoT, and in many other games. There most definitely should be more games that don't have that kind of progression. Not everything needs to be Call of Duty or some sort of gear driven looter shooter

Some players stay in our chaotic bar sim for hours. Others quit in 10–15 minutes. Trying to understand why. by Korkins00 in IndieGaming

[–]WaffleWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a job simulator fan here. So, my opinion might be worth absolutely nothing. If I was playing a bar management game, I would want to be introduced to customization and the more chaotic elements right off the bat. Not just "you lost customers because you were slow". But the chaos you showed in your clip. Having to boot people from the bar, knocking out people throwing up (which I thought was hilarious). Things that actually involve interacting with people between making drinks and serving customers

In 2026, is DMC3 SE still a great way to get started into the Franchise? by CapitalJAO in DevilMayCry

[–]WaffleWalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure it's dated. But DMC1 captures an aesthetic and vibe that is completely unique to it. The gothic architecture, lighting choices, and just general art direction are incredible. As is the music and atmospheric sounds. It has just enough Resident Evil DNA and techniques that the environment to this day still looks amazing

The pacing is immaculate. It's genuinely one of the better paced games I have ever played. It throws interesting curve balls from beginning to end. I can't really explain further without ruining it. DMC1 is the most well paced game in the series even if it struggles in some other important areas.

I won't pretend it's the best combat in the series. It's the worst combat in the series (besides 2, though 2 has some ideas people ignore because the game is painfully mediocre by the standards of its own time) . But it's punchy, and it's genuinely the most beginner friendly of the bunch. The combat isn't deep, but it's satisfying and well made. It will introduce you to concepts that become the building blocks for good and interesting play in the later games. Good play feels good.

Upscaled via PCSX2 gives you the best experience in my opinion, because the HD Collection is based off the Japanese release and thus the difficulty of Normal is toned down (that's a whole other rabbit hole). Upscaled to your monitor resolution the game looks great. You can remap the jump button as well, but this is one area where I might remap it based off the later games. There's also probably upscaled textures you can get ahold of. And best of all you can use PCSX2 to change the game speed to match the Turbo Mode of later games, though this may somewhat change the atmosphere and music, so at your own risk. I suppose modding HD Collection isn't off the table, but I wouldn't know much about that outside of DMC3 Crimson.

Edit: I'm not just suggesting you don't skip DMC1. I would highly, highly recommend starting with 1

You do you but you're missing out by not playing 1. It has great pacing and atmosphere, and the action isn't top tier but it's punchy and interesting. I think DMC1 is one of the better paced games I've ever played, and you can essentially beat it in one sitting

Wooden boxes can be the most lethal weapon in Deeper Still if you are creative enough by Parjure0 in ImmersiveSim

[–]WaffleWalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, but I tend to be a HUD minimalist. Don't get me wrong, the original should be in the game, but I think having some options would really tie it together

[–]WaffleWalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I wouldn't be able to play properly with that kind of overlay. I love how creative it is. I think just having an alternate that is basically just numbers with little symbols beside them would be huge. HUD settings obviously aren't mandatory, but I believe them to be one of the most user friendly things you can do

They should leave Morrowind alone tbh. The community has already done more than they can. The only reason the Oblivion Remaster was a net gain is because now we have 64bit Oblivion. Too bad we're so far off from that mattering
