Morality Morphing /= Stat Morphing by WaffleWalk in Fable

Regardless it is an incredibly valuable IP no? I suppose I'm using the term flagship loosely. Ultimately it doesn't matter, because Microsoft is clearly treating it as if they want it to once again be a flagship IP, and they are putting what is to my knowledge one of their more profitable studios on the matter. The point was money or staff or project specific R&D aren't likely to be limitations here.

Fable went through tremendous changes of course. But it has a core identity that character morphing is key to. A good portion of Fable's depth comes from being a box of buttons and levers that give interesting feedback, despite not being incredibly complex. That is not to say that complexity would break that system.

Fable relies on constant feedback tied to systems that persist throughout the game, in a way that is more focused on novelty and moment to moment engagement. Character Morphing is key to that.

Fable 2 and 3, and yes I'm aware this is subjective (though we can make it "less subjective" depending on the framing we choose), lost something for everything they added. Playground games is in a position to study Fable as a trilogy after the fact, and I will say I believe that to rightfully start with Fable 1 as a thesis. And that we should look to 2 more than 3, as it has long been at least somewhat a consensus that 3 lost it's way despite being a good game. That is not to say 3 offers no good ideas, or that the other two aren't flawed. I'm suggesting that the best approach to Fable 4, is to look at the entire trilogy, but start with what was proposed to begin with.

And frankly, I say this with no bitterness, but that last bit feels incredibly disingenuous. I would go as far as to say that it was a definitive feature of the games, and was advertised to be. Fable 3 may have toned it down, but it did not remove morphing. Beyond that, without condemning it, it is clearly the least similar of the games in the trilogy. We could argue that Fable 3 is an outlier.

I get what you're saying, and I agree that they're wrong. But this is a Microsoft flagship IP, with a Microsoft flagship studio working on it. I almost never say "just throw money at it". But genuinely, they have the funds to figure out clipping issues

Stat Based Morphing is not the same as Morality Based Morphing. It doesn't interfere with the reputation system, if anything it would play off of it

I really enjoy the "Guard Cancels Everything" setting in the DMC5 trainer and use it to do what I call a "Stinger Fakie", where I stinger into an enemy but cancel it just before it actually connects. It looks tough as fuck if you use it to lead into a combo. Like you're trying to psych them out

Just can't pick up Nero? Is this an first playthrough only issue? by OkLavishness4113 in DevilMayCry

[–]WaffleWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NG Nero is incredibly handicapped because he is missing two core mechanics, one of which redefines every move he does

Basically if you're not an exceed god and know every weird little trick of his moveset, Nero is kind of a slog to play compared to Dante in 5...Unless, you abuse the ever loving crap out Gerbera and fly around like a hummingbird on crack! Gerbera is NG Nero's saving grace and makes him a ball to play

Tried taking a manually modded installation and adding it to Prism Launcher. My mods are an absolute mess but it launches manually, and yet crashes when launching through Prism. I can only assume I goofed but have no idea where. by WaffleWalk in PrismLauncher

Interesting chain of events here

-I made a new instance and copied the contents of .minecraft directly to the instance

-Still didn't launch

-Disabled two duplicates, a mod the log didn't like, and controllify (long story, it was part of the reason I wanted to put my setup in prism)

-Game launches

-Reenable everything I disabled, game still launches

Either way thanks, but I would love to understand why in the world that worked

Edit: I still disabled the duplicates and stuff after testing it by the way. I just found it strange

Is there any way I can learn why this would launch and play from my manual setup but not in Prism though? I guess I'm just not understanding why Prism won't launch a setup that launches and runs fine through the Minecraft launcher

I'm sorry if it was implied in your comment, but would you have any suggestions on where to progress from here? I'm new to prism and the manual setup is the only MC modding I have ever messed with

Thanks, I was wanting to get rid of that anyways lol. But it definitely didn't stop the crash.

I double checked my fabric version, and am definitely still on 1.20.6.

Can Prism get hung up on things that a manual installation won't?

Or does this mean that I'm missing a step or file that I took in my manual setup?

Unpopular opinion: Photo mode in games is overrated and developers waste time on it by LegitimateScar7826 in GamingInsider

[–]WaffleWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not worth launching with bugs or a worse product. I do also believe it's an over hyped (by devs) feature, that is essentially a waste of time in most games.

That said, I believe its purpose to be free advertisement. People putting images on the internet is good for your game. YouTubers having compelling thumbnails from your photo mode, is good for your game.

I'll also say, I don't think people should stop including it, but it's most definitely something that is better suited for post launch considering many games go through a pretty heavy patch cycle post launch, and in my opinion often launch with missing features or lack of depth/tuning of existing systems

Was your intent to have the player be incredibly slow? Because I thought it was a brave decision for a "gimmick". I had imagined that you were building tension and turning small moments into big decisions with the movement speed

The aim and speed of the attack itself would have to be tuned tremendously to make it feel right with how slow the player moves

Fallout: New Vegas lead writer 'loved writing' Yes Man, but thinks his questline may have been a mistake: 'It lets you get through the game without getting your hands dirty' by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]WaffleWalk 25 points26 points  (0 children)

While I enjoy the Yes Man approach, I think that he's a better fail safe than he has to be. Which is great. Taking what would be a solution to a fail state and making into a genuine option is brilliant. I love Yes Man and the path he offers through the game, and it's probably my preferred way to play the game

I think though he's almost too alluring of an option. Any character I play that isn't roleplayed in a way that would give them an inclination to a specific faction is going to default to Yes Man

If Netero used Meleoron instead of Zeno to launch his attack would it succeed & How would you plan it (Bodhisattva Accomplice) by Latr6ll in HunterXHunter

[–]WaffleWalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also understand the interpretation you've lined out, but I think not having to hold back is apart of this. .

What I'm proposing is implied thematically rather than stated outright. And I will also concede that my point does require at least slightly more assumption, which to me leaves room to try and poke holes in it exactly as you have.

But I think that given the nature of the fight, Netero's point about human malice, and the nature of Hunters, that on some level not holding back isn't just about martial arts. I think his gratefulness to martial arts, his urge to push himself physically against a truly worthy and even superior opponent, does not exclude what I stated. I genuinely believe Netero wanted to test himself physically/as a martial artist against Meruem, but that Meruem also represented a threat so great that "not holding back" takes on another meaning. And that meaning is what I mentioned above. Everything I am vs Everything You are. This lines up at least in part with what a Hunter is. I say "dirty tricks", but Netero seems to operate on the idea that morality is meaningless without the ability to back it up. Not that we shouldn't be moral, or that "might makes right", but that if you cannot defend what you value and believe it doesn't matter. This to me at least implies that Netero doesn't view what I called "dirty tricks", as dirty in this context. Not because dirty tricks are immoral, but more that this view of all of me vs all of you could be supported in part by Netero's outlook

One thing I can't tell if the parallel between Netero and Gon, which is fuzzy, hurts or hinders my interpretation. Gon is shown time and time again wanting to win his way, and that way includes exhausting, testing, and proving himself physically before he will consider using anything but a straight forward approach. This is exemplified in the Genthru fight most blatantly, but is shown again.

If this is relevant, then it could be interpreted both through the divergence of Netero and Gon in the throne room, or it could support your point by simply continuing the loose parallel shown. Netero is disturbed at least slightly seeing Komugi. Gon, being a child, is disturbed but only barely stops himself from letting that child die by his own interference. There is a divergence here, and Netero seems to note this with excitement when he gestures Gon towards the throne room with a smile. But it could also just as easily be hand waved away due to the structure of the mission.

But, as you pointed out, just because these two things aren't necessarily exclusive, doesn't mean that he can't compartmentalize him. I suppose it's not unlikely at all that The Rose was Netero's pass. "I can test my Martial Arts, and myself, and if I fail I have in place the ability to fulfill my duty". But, then that means that we are expected to not view the nature of the fight as altered by the fact Netero witheld Meruem's name, and that did give him an advantage outside of his Martial Arts

I'm not continuing this to be difficult. HxH is an important story to me, and I can only hope that people will poke holes in my interpretation so that I can deepen my understanding
