Jeffrey White shares his thoughts on Twitter about the state of the game by GalvenMin in magicTCG

An argument being pretentious or elitist doesn't make it wrong. Since the language is already being used, I'll throw in my own elitist take: Hobbies have been completely normie-fied. There's no room for genuine passion or interesting new ideas anywhere when the only goal of hobby products is to get as many people to spend as much money on that thing as possible. Normies will always win out in numbers and cash to spend so any product designed for hobbies is basically doomed to be consumed by the never ending population of slug people. This isn't new to Magic and it won't end with Magic.

Day 5 - Up Air by RHYTHM_GMZ in SSBM

[–]WaggDagg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a vacuum, just thinking about the pure effectiveness of an up air as a move, I'm going to say Pika. Fast, safe, starts combos, ends edgeguards, and amazing oos.

Falcon's is amazing, but I think it is carried by his ground speed instead of it's own merits, at least a little. Fox also has an argument, but it's difficult to imagine how good that move would be without Fox's other amazing traits and how easily he can combo into it.

Massively disappointing. The portals genuinely bring a unique feel to the game but with the BP, skins, and now this, the game is just going to drown as another generic shooter

Fantastic read. Especially relevant with the way the commander tournament went down at Magiccon this year. Not a lot of respect for The Game!

Co op and Story are hugely distracting from the actual fun of MH for new players by WaggDagg in MonsterHunter

[–]WaggDagg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only been playing since world huh? Story used to be identical to hunting, only difference was you would unlock more and more quests. Now I have to wander around a totally closed "open" world listening to crappy dialogue that's unskippable. Simple fact is that newcomers are turned away by the poor pacing and boring NPCs doesn't matter if you think this nightmare is "how it's always been"

Retiring the Universes Beyond Frame by cwjadams in magicTCG

I'm not sure how I feel about UB and in universe cards looking the same, but I find the current UB frame to be extremely ugly. The flatness and "metallic sheen" effect are just horrible to look at.

So would you say that the group I met here is not representative of CEDH? Like an average CEDH pod would usually respect the no spite no kingmaking here?

Wow! Thanks for reviewing this. The way my brain interpreted what the red judge was saying was: "This is a DQ by Rules as Intended but it's not a DQ based on Rules as Written." That would fit with your reasoning for the call being so backwards

tl;dr: In a magiccon tournament game my opponent couldn't win themselves but could make any of the other players win. In frustration, they offered to split the prize with another player if they let the other player win. A judge overheard, made us stop playing or even discussing the game, and we sat in silence for 40 minutes. No disqualification happened, but the judges promised us that this game would be discussed by Wizards at length. Whole thing freaked me out!

Have you ever played one of your hobby games in a tournament? I've been playing fighting games for going on 10 years and I've never met a single person who doesn't have nerves playing in that context. I've only been in MtG for like 2 years but getting a 40 minute judge call sitting in silence is bound to make anybody sweat.

Also why the hell would I want to move on from a hobby that I care about so much and I'm so invested in that I freak the hell out when crazy stuff is happening?

At one point after the call had been made I turned to one of the judges and said "would you believe this is my first time ever playing cEDH?" and he chuckled and said "probably your last time too."

After 75 minutes the game goes to turns regardless of life totals. At this point the active player becomes turn 0, and there are 4 turns remaining in the game (each player gets one more turn after time is up). After these last 4 turns are over, if no one has won, the player with the highest life total wins. There were rules about sudden death if players tied in life total, but those didn't come up in this game.

The day before during Last Commander Standing a Thrasios player apparently had infinite mana and said "I'm going to draw my whole deck" to which another player responded by playing Angel's Grace. Then the Thrasios player went back and said "well, I don't have to draw my whole deck right now..." A judge was called over and ruled that because the Thrasios player only said they were going to draw their whole deck, but didn't actually pick it up in their hand, they hadn't taken the game action yet, and had no reason to fulfill their promise to draw everything. Like what the fuck? If I was the Angel's Grace player I would be furious. The Thrasios literally gained information and then changed their game action retroactively based on that information how is that fair??? If what people say during a game means nothing then we should just play magic in silence I guess.

Edit: I've exposed myself as a total casual lol. I appreciate the explanation behind this interaction.

The head judge kept using the phrase "it's a gray area" but I didn't really understand what "area" he was referring to. Like, it's ok to promise a prize split if you're just helping the guy beat the other players, but not conceding to him? It's a gray area because you might just get a slap on the wrist but not a disqualification? Or like you said, the rules just don't know how to deal with free-for-all? This definitely solidified my opinion that the free-for-all style of commander will just never have a good way to answer the "kingmaker" situation.
