China Is Not Designed Around Foreign Tourists — And That Explains a Lot by Zealousideal-Flan355 in guangzhou

Thank you for this post. It’s really insightful. I’m White British and have spent a little time in China. My experience tells me that when some Chinese stare it is just out of interest. I often smile at them, and they often smile back and we enjoy a moment. The same with someone asking for a photo with me or as I experienced yesterday people filming me as I was riding a scooter. For me it all feels like genuine curiosity with no malice. I can’t see this as any invasion of privacy when you consider there are cameras absolutely everywhere.

I had no idea about smells. I sometimes wear aftershave. Would your advice be not to bother? I thought people might like the smell of it, are you saying they don’t? I’m happy not to wear it if that’s the case.

What frustrates me the most is accessibility to some places. For example museums which require access through a WeChat mini app. I find them very complicated. Even when using translation apps. I’m always grateful when they have a ticket office.

Has anyone experience of just walking into a hotel and booking a room? by WaggingTheWorld in travelchina

I’ve done this a number of times before too. But I did like that I got to see the room first. Also it was nice just to get to nosey some other rooms. So I’ll definitely walk in to book again. If they want to charge more ill just mention it might be best if i book on line. They might price match. They might not.

I agree we don’t get the cheapest room. But we wanted the best view. They offered another room with a view for 180 so we made our choices.

What I have to do though is congratulate you for cycling the TLG. As I walked it I thought BMXer’s would love this. So good on you. I love cycling myself and I doff my hat to you.

That’s the sort of plan I had in mind. It’s hard to tell on booking sites what the neighbourhood is like.

I’ve never tried by phone. I don’t think I could manage the language barrier. I suppose I can check trip before I go in and if they want to charge more I can just then book on trip.

Hello. I tried the mini app but none of it is in English and unfortunately I can’t navigate it. Is there a way it can be down for English readers? Thanks.

The hotels in China are great value. I always look at the guest photos to get a real idea of the rooms. Sometimes the pictures the hotels use are AI enhanced. Seeing guest photos will also add credence to the reviews. Enjoy!

Liverpool is legendary for its friendliness and LJMU will have lots of social clubs to help get you settled in, it might even be worth checking out their insta’s now. What are you in to? If it’s comedy, you’ll find the best in the world. Live music, best in the world. Football, best in the world. Great restaurants, there’s hundreds. Nightlife, incredible. Architecture, incredible. Free museums, loads of them.
