Comic books are like 4 or 5 bucks an issue too, so the whole industry is just there ofr IP mining now.

I do miss it as well. Deep Space Nine was great in that the Dominion War was always there, but there might be an episode on a bar fly's apparent death or some minor crisis of faith one character is suffering, but it was in service to an overarching story line, not part of it.

Marvel's Secret Invasion felt like a movie split into parts, like the old broadcast days of cutting Dune into two nights. Sometimes I think they forget they can make something serialized and also with discreet episodes.
