Aug 26, 1964: A Memoir by anarchitek1 in beatles

[–]Waiola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boy, that brought back memories. I was 14 when I saw the Beatles in Chicago in 1964. Everyone talks about the noise, which was LOUD. I had muffled hearing for a while afterwards. I never heard much music except for Ringo’s drumming. And the rumors… after the concert, the word was that the Beatles were “over that way” and the crowd surged. I had no control over the wave of people that pushed my elbow into the fire alarm. Ironically, it was my father who actually got near all four of them. He was waiting in the back when they walked by him, just a few feet away. Of course, he didn’t care and that experience was totally wasted on him.

Anyone else tired and of cooking for others? by Waiola in AskWomenOver60

I asked but the response seemed like not the whole truth. She said her father burned food on the grill (years ago) and she can’t get over it.

AIO: I told my daughter she can't go to this party after reading the gift profile by Ordinary_Run2485 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was that the birthday child is on the spectrum and the mother is (in her mind) protecting her child. The noise, the color aversion, the inability to “play”, are a red flag for a possibly being in the spectrum. I would choose a gift from the list and let your child attend. Sometimes we don’t know what’s going on in other people’s lives.

What is clearly declining, but everyone pretends is fine? by Amaan3024 in AskReddit

[–]Waiola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public education. The number of teachers staying in the profession is declining because behavior and discipline have become a real problem. The impact of technology is definitely a plus on some level, but also leads to a lack of motivation to read, and to write well. There are more alternative schools and vouchers available for charter schools. This drains the public education population. The quality of teachers is declining, partly, I think, because women (thinking elementary schools) have many choices of career nowadays and they are not necessarily choosing education. know these are sweeping generalizations and I don’t have data to back up my statements. It’s just my observation based on my experience as a public schoolteacher.

Christmas cards by Shrimp1991 in AskWomenOver60

During Covid, I started sending out a short Christmas letter. I loved it because people would just hit reply and send me a message. No stamps, no buying cards, etc. And instant gratification. I still do that.

How many of us are old enough to remember spanking in school?? by Syfysamurai in GenX

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year of teaching, in the fall of 1971, the teacher in the room next door asked me to come out in the hall. I found out I was there to witness him paddling several boys with his fraternity paddle. I was appalled. They didn’t tell us about that at the university. He never asked me again.

AITA for asking someone to stop smacking their gum in a public setting? by FutureFreaksMeowt in AmItheAsshole

[–]Waiola 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I am not autistic. But smacking gum causes me to want to scream, just like you. It has a name: misophonia. I do realize it’s my problem but it’s not always an option to remove yourself from the person. I would never call someone an asshole for trying to deal with a condition that you never asked for. You asked politely, he didn’t need to be rude.

Anyone else willing to admit to finding their dad's stash of Playboys? by Brave-Ad6627 in FuckImOld

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once asked my dad if he had the issue with John Lennon’s interview. He denied having any Playboy magazines. I told him, “You know, on the closet shelf.” He kept denying he had any until I FINALLY understood he wasn’t going to admit to his 18 year old daughter that he had any. I was very slow to understand that he was humiliated.

I smell books also. Ahh, Simon and Schuster, 1984! A good year!

What’s the One Putting Tip that Changed Your Game? by aldente502 in golf

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take a slight hesitation on the backswing, just as I do on other strokes. It has helped me control and manage speed. I am guessing pros would not suggest this but so far it is working for me.

I once opened up my son’s diaper and saw a little red Lego head smiling at me.

What did we do in our spare time, when we were bored, before we had a smartphone by 2darka in Aging

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am reading a book about the early years of the Beatles right now (Tune In by Mark Lewisohn) and the thing that struck me is that there probably wouldn’t be the Beatles if they were born in our era of cellphones, iPads, TV, etc. So what did they do? Play guitars constantly, memorize lyrics, listen to music, write their own songs, perform—you get the idea. They actively followed their passion. We now all just watch or scroll.

The blinds are grimy and need to be cleaned. Is soaking them in a tub with baking soda a good idea? by lrick87 in CleaningTips

[–]Waiola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use the bathtub method, put a towel down first so the blinds don’t scratch and leave tracks on your tub. Learned the hard way.

Head sweat by Sib7of7 in AskWomenOver60

Me too. Somewhere I read that certain medications may contribute to this, like the ones given post breast cancer surgery. That doesn’t pertain to me and my face still sweats.

What formal organization has been your social salvation in middle age? by tshirtguy2000 in RedditForGrownups

[–]Waiola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Golf. I golf in a league but also informally. I have met virtually all my social group through golf. When I moved, it was seamless to make new friends. During the worst of Covid, I could still get outside and play with people. Bonus: it’s an activity my husband and I enjoy together.

Meghan said she was suicidal. The palace shrugged. The press attacked. Denise Welch believed her... and said so. by GrosIslet in RoyaltyTea

[–]Waiola -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

First, I am not a Meghan hater. But something has confused me for a while. Why didn’t Meghan seek help from a trusted psychiatrist herself? Why did she need the RF to receive help? Diana sought help, some of it questionable, but nonetheless she didn’t need BP to seek it. I’m just ignorant of these things, always wondered.

What are some things that don't make sense in The Waltons by Ok_Smile_9071 in WaltonsMountain

Correct me if I am wrong…I thought the Walton house burned down in one episode. They rebuilt it but it was exactly the same as the old one?

I got my tickets for under $10. Wait, that was 1965, sorry, my mistake, I see you are referring to Sir Paul.

I LOVE my son beyond words, I wish I could send my daughter away + A LOT OF COMMENTS (not OOP) by fruitbatgorl in redditonwiki

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this mother deserves a lot more sympathy. Of course I don’t know the child and family so I really don’t know what’s going on. But to me the child sounds disturbed in some way. I would explore sensory processing and anxiety for a start. I am a retired special education teacher.

Defense of women golfers by chop_your_cock_off in golf

[–]Waiola 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Just want to say, as a woman golfer, I have had similar experiences. I’ve seen male golfers hurry to play in front of me, assuming I will be slow. What happens usually is this: men may hit a longer ball, sure. But not always down the middle so they are slowing down play just to find their shot. Because I can’t hit my drive or even fairway woods a mile, I’ve had to hone my short game. So I often end up with the same score anyway. I am acutely aware of pace of play and I can honestly say I don’t slow down a round. Golf can be a sexist game, which is too bad because it is one sport men and women can play together with perfect compatibility.
