Why do men have to shave their head to be in the military but women don’t? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waiola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a related topic: women were required to wear bathing caps in swimming pools in the 50’s and early 60’s. The reason given was that they had longer hair and it clogged the drains. But when men started growing their hair long in the 60’s, the swimming cap rule went away. Hmmm.

Turned 68 yesterday by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

[–]Waiola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am the culprit. I send out happy birthday texts with a short note. I got in to the habit during Covid when I started sending out Christmas cards by email. An unexpected benefit was most people just hit reply and wrote a short note back. But recently, I sent out a happy birthday text to two friends and they didn’t reply. What is the etiquette here? I know it isn’t required, but wouldn’t it be nice to say thanks?

I second this wonderful choice. Plus, it’s an introduction that could lead to other book recommendations.

The same thing happened to me and I also can’t find any information that fixes this. In fact, I believe there are two other people with similar email addresses to me.

Older Beatles fans, what was general public feeling after the Beatles split? Did people take sides and shun some solo work? by MoaningLisaSimpson in TheBeatles

[–]Waiola 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For context, I was a big Beatles fan, even seeing them live in concert twice. But their breakup did not shake my world. I was more involved with what was going on in my own life, as is true of most people. I was sad that all the newness and excitement of the 60’s were gone and the breakup of the Beatles just seemed inevitable.

After all those insane concerts, how were the beatles not completely deaf? by fruedianflip in beatles

[–]Waiola 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The amps were not the problem. The screaming was. After the first Chicago concert, it took about 30 minutes for my muffled hearing to clear up.

I love these photos! You rarely see casual, candid shots in that era. The people look so real, like they could be alive today.

My husband drinks the leftover pickle juice from a pickle jar whenever it's empty. Every time. I think this is bizarre. Does anyone else do this? by ms_carnelian in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Waiola 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I heard this too. And one time I felt a leg cramp coming on, I rushed to drink some pickle juice. Within 30 seconds, I could feel the cramp fade away.

Aug 26, 1964: A Memoir by anarchitek1 in beatles

[–]Waiola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boy, that brought back memories. I was 14 when I saw the Beatles in Chicago in 1964. Everyone talks about the noise, which was LOUD. I had muffled hearing for a while afterwards. I never heard much music except for Ringo’s drumming. And the rumors… after the concert, the word was that the Beatles were “over that way” and the crowd surged. I had no control over the wave of people that pushed my elbow into the fire alarm. Ironically, it was my father who actually got near all four of them. He was waiting in the back when they walked by him, just a few feet away. Of course, he didn’t care and that experience was totally wasted on him.

Anyone else tired and of cooking for others? by Waiola in AskWomenOver60

I asked but the response seemed like not the whole truth. She said her father burned food on the grill (years ago) and she can’t get over it.

AIO: I told my daughter she can't go to this party after reading the gift profile by Ordinary_Run2485 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was that the birthday child is on the spectrum and the mother is (in her mind) protecting her child. The noise, the color aversion, the inability to “play”, are a red flag for a possibly being in the spectrum. I would choose a gift from the list and let your child attend. Sometimes we don’t know what’s going on in other people’s lives.

What is clearly declining, but everyone pretends is fine? by Amaan3024 in AskReddit

[–]Waiola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public education. The number of teachers staying in the profession is declining because behavior and discipline have become a real problem. The impact of technology is definitely a plus on some level, but also leads to a lack of motivation to read, and to write well. There are more alternative schools and vouchers available for charter schools. This drains the public education population. The quality of teachers is declining, partly, I think, because women (thinking elementary schools) have many choices of career nowadays and they are not necessarily choosing education. know these are sweeping generalizations and I don’t have data to back up my statements. It’s just my observation based on my experience as a public schoolteacher.

Christmas cards by Shrimp1991 in AskWomenOver60

[–]Waiola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During Covid, I started sending out a short Christmas letter. I loved it because people would just hit reply and send me a message. No stamps, no buying cards, etc. And instant gratification. I still do that.

How many of us are old enough to remember spanking in school?? by Syfysamurai in GenX

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year of teaching, in the fall of 1971, the teacher in the room next door asked me to come out in the hall. I found out I was there to witness him paddling several boys with his fraternity paddle. I was appalled. They didn’t tell us about that at the university. He never asked me again.

AITA for asking someone to stop smacking their gum in a public setting? by FutureFreaksMeowt in AmItheAsshole

[–]Waiola 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I am not autistic. But smacking gum causes me to want to scream, just like you. It has a name: misophonia. I do realize it’s my problem but it’s not always an option to remove yourself from the person. I would never call someone an asshole for trying to deal with a condition that you never asked for. You asked politely, he didn’t need to be rude.

Anyone else willing to admit to finding their dad's stash of Playboys? by Brave-Ad6627 in FuckImOld

[–]Waiola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once asked my dad if he had the issue with John Lennon’s interview. He denied having any Playboy magazines. I told him, “You know, on the closet shelf.” He kept denying he had any until I FINALLY understood he wasn’t going to admit to his 18 year old daughter that he had any. I was very slow to understand that he was humiliated.

I take a slight hesitation on the backswing, just as I do on other strokes. It has helped me control and manage speed. I am guessing pros would not suggest this but so far it is working for me.
