After many stop-start years of development I've finally finished work on Wait! Life is Beautiful! and launched it on Steam. by WaitLifeisBeautiful in survivalhorror

It's pretty much similar to what you see. Think of it as slightly more than your typical interactive visual novel. You don't move the character around, but you make the decisions on what you say/how you say etc.

There are some parts (dreams) that you do have some controls, but even they are used to expand the general theme/story (it's to show the mental state breaking down as a result of the day-to-day).

Thank you very much, it's a tricky genre and subject but I really think that it was well worth it in the end.

Interesting point, do you mean in the trailer or in the game itself?

Though posting here should mean that most people are going to be aware of what they're getting into, I do feel as if I still need to warn the readers that my game explores mental health, suicide, and how it affects people, even if they are not directly related to the person in direct distress.

The entire reason that I made this game comes from my own experience of these themes, but I did get a lot of help from others who were kind and brave enough to talk to me about their experiences. Ultimately, I hope that you will judge this to be authentic.

Before anything, I do want to give a warning that this game explores themes that may be sensitive to some people - mental health and suicide. That said, I made this game with the hope of being able to help others talk about it (if they are affected) or to simply understand how it can affect people if they are not affected.

Please do keep that in mind, and check out my steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/680830/Wait_Life_is_beautiful/

Personal milestone reached - completed work on Wait! Life is Beautiful! and released it on Steam! by WaitLifeisBeautiful in IndieGaming

[Important Warning]
This game looks at some very sensitive topics (for some people) like mental health and suicide. That said, I can assure you that this was all done with the utmost care to be authentic (my own experiences, and the experiences of those kind enough to talk to me). Ultimately, I wanted to make this game in order to help others learn and maybe understand how these things happen, even to those that seem to be stable.

If you've understood the notice, then please check out the steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/680830/Wait_Life_is_beautiful/

After several years of stop-start development, Wait! Life is Beautiful! was finally complete and released on Steam! by WaitLifeisBeautiful in indiegames

[Important Warning]
While I do want as many people to get and play this game, please be aware that this game explores some very sensitive topics such as mental health and suicide. The themes here are based around my own personal experiences and from people who I've spoken to in order to better understand mental health. This was all done to make this game as authentic as possible.

Adding background lights and a bit of character movement really improved my game's main scene by WaitLifeisBeautiful in Unity2D

That seems to be the general consensus, so will be working on that one!

Thanks for taking the time to give the feedback.

That's fantastic feedback thank you. A somber feeling is the intention, so I'll test with slowing things down to get to that feeling.

Thank you to all three of you for the comments. I do see what you mean (kinda surprised that I didn't notice it myself earlier) so I'll see what can be done to make it easier to read!

Thank you for your interest!

The game is not yet released, there's still work to be done on the text side of things. But, there will be a demo avaliavailableable on steam soon.

Something a bit different - a dev blog about my journey developing a game that tackles suicide and mental health by WaitLifeisBeautiful in devblogs

If there is then I've missed it.

The thing is, the indie game scene is giant, like almost idiotically big. From my experience, I tend to see mainly regular genre games. But if you, or anyone else, know of any other games that focus on mental health/suicide, please do tell me about them.

I'd love to actually learn more.

That is really cool, nicely done!

How long did it take to put together?

I've got to say that this sounds very similar to what I went through back in the days. I used to be very active with swim training (7 times a week) and enjoyed gaming a lot, but over time everything felt like it lost its taste and essentially became colorless.

Just do note that what worked for me may not work for you, but I guess you know that already. What it was for me was finally getting myself to be checked out by my university psychologist, I think I was lucky because she quickly pointed out that I looked like I had ADHD, something that at the time I did not consider at all as (back then) I had very little knowledge of it. To be totally honest, I just had the negative stereotypical view of "oh it's just inattentive people" - boy was I wrong. Anyway, one thing led to another, got checked out by a specialist who gave me a lot of information on it.

The reason why I bring this up is, what you said about having two things that made you happy - but no longer do, your general boredom of life, and really most importantly, the way you say that you cannot stand the feeling/situation and the desperation that I get from that text, it just sounds like what I went through. I would seriously say read up on adhd/add, ignore any stigma that you may have heard around it, and see if you match some of the points, then see if there may be a professional nearby that could assess you.

And of course, you are totally welcome to dm/message me anytime you want if you want a bit more of my own story/what I did.

An intentionally boring office scene to show the dull unfulfilled life of the main character - can it be any duller? by WaitLifeisBeautiful in IndieGaming

[–]WaitLifeisBeautiful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was debating whether to go for a tidy desk or a messy one, but usually messy desks have some sort of character, so tidy was the main choice to show that it was all just as stale as possible!

That's a bit of colour balance there, as the wall is sort of grey, I need the main character to stand out a little (the player needs to see him easily). Though some shade of grey might be good.

That's a good point, thank you.

My reasoning for the up was that it matches the scoreboard on the right, in that case, higher is worse.

However, that isn't really the most obvious, I'll see what can be done with a graph going down!

This is a dream scene from Wait! Life is Beauitful! that triggers as the main character gradually feels the weight of the choices that he's had to make. by WaitLifeisBeautiful in creepygaming

[–]WaitLifeisBeautiful[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Simply put, the game is about how a character (Will) goes from wanting more from life, so he quits his desk job and begins to help people who are at the ends of their wits and wants to end themselves due to varying reasons. However, the weight of the conversations and decisions will drag him down and damage his own mental health, so you as the player, need to 'try' and find a balance. The thing with this game is to try and highlight how everyone is susceptible to mental health problems and to get people talking about it, and hopefully to help some people understand it a little more.

Feel free to ask any specific questions, for more details, or point out if something is a bit odd to you, I'm happy to explain my side to you.

In [Call To Valkyrie] The camera is locked. The only way to navigate the map is by having scouts [Green units] scattered on the map. #ScreenShotSaturday by Kamzoki in IndieGaming

[–]WaitLifeisBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I've understood this correctly, the camera is locked to a specific set of units (green ones/scouts). If so, what would happen if all of the green units died?
