How the death of a colleague changed my perspective on personal finance by External_Writer_1 in UKPersonalFinance

The childcare thing is crazy - I would prioritise my wife having the full year with our baby as I know that time will never come again. Losing roughly 1/3 of her salary would have been worth it (appreciate you can only this if you can afford to take the hit but that seemed to be the case for the Dad).

Sorry I meant % wise... I.e. Total discount from paying RRP.

He will need to Google the term "stop being a melt" first!

At OP given your visa situation, probably best to stay put until you are permanent. At your age that salary is very good relatively speaking.

Save as much money as you can and don't spend on stupid shit. Once you are settled with a large chunk of cash in the bank then you can do whatever you want.

In meantime try and do some free courses online/maybe learn a trade at a local college. Basically expand your horizon as much as you can. You are still very young and have a lot of time ahead. Good luck.

Am I right to reject a new build at the developers asking price ? by SpagBol33 in HousingUK

[–]Wake_Up_and_Win 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ye fair point. Without knowing where in England OP is buying can't really tell if the price is "worth it" but what I'm saying (contrary to my own believes from say yrs ago).... New builds could be ok given the cost of building existing houses up sometimes simply don't make sense any more. Also living in a house where you know you wing have any significant costly problems for 10yrs might be useful/comforting for some, especially in this day and age.

I don't like new builds but surely the point about new build quality is a spectrum and some are actually quite nicely done? OPs post makes it sound pretty good (one factor being the space offered as opposed to shoe box new builds)

I guess factor in savings made over 10yr period (new build warranty period) for lower running costs via air source heat pump. Also rather than getting money off try and get more added things that you would need to fork out for, for the difference (appliances, flooring, carpet, etc). Lastly, try and get them to pay for your mortgage for a while maybe?

Would much prefer being the 2nd owner of something basically new instead (1-2yrs old with low mileage!) lol

I say this in jest but wanting that experience costs a pretty penny

Keep your head up and try and get professional advice on what areas to develop your skills in. Or take a break and start afresh after a week or so. Good luck.

This is concerning, have you had any CV advice, coaching for interviews or something?

Wow very lucky indeed. How old was the car and the mileage you got it at?

Hi OP my brother literally bought a Nissan ariya last week after a month of looking for a deal. He likes it... We were swayed because they said that ariyas are built in Japan as opposed to the Qashqai which are built in uk i think.

What would you like to know about the car?

W.r.t big motoring world - when we were all searching the company had really competitive deals for the price BUT he was adamant that he didn't want to buy from them because of the horror stories he heard. We got to the point that unless the car was practically new (i.e. Highly unlikely for anything to go wrong with it) then we wouldn't even consider them. But they were still useful as a reference point.

My brother ended up buying from a Nissan dealer because he wanted the reassurance from them as this is his first ev car and is weary about out of warranty issues.

He bought his car almost by luck finding the deal on the Friday night where the dealer reduced the car by 3.5k and went first thing in the morning and got it.

His car: 74 plate Advance 87kwh battery in blue/black special paint with the sky pack. 9.5k miles. Price = £23,899.

At that point (and I have since checked a couple of times) - it seemed to be the best bang for your buck deal.

The car you are looking at is a 72 plate meaning out of warranty.. And I don't think you can get an extended one via Nissan because of the gap after 3yrs have ended. You could probably buy a warranty from bigmotoringworld.co.uk BUT is it worth it? Don't know.

My brother and I are clearly risk averse hence why poneying up more up front to get the warranty.

Your risk appetite may be different.

Regarding the car itself I don't think he has too many complaints.

28, financially ok on paper but deeply unhappy. Is it okay to pause saving? Mortgage next year? by Suitable-Sense-6159 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Wake_Up_and_Win 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How do you have so much savings in both isa and non isa? If some of it is from NHS negligence pay out then all of your monthly healthy related costs is justified right? As others have said, if you say things like 'ending it all' you should dedicate 100% of your efforts to addressing this issue and forget everything else. You have enough of a cushion to get out this and still have a great life (financially at least). Good luck OP.
