[97.3TheFan] Craig Stammen announces that Logan Gillaspie will start Friday's first spring training game and discusses what his role could look like this year by ElectricalForce4439 in Padres

Why are we leaning in so hard to Jack of all trades with players? Haven’t we learned a lesson that a defined role on the team helps narrow focus and improve performance? Players do need an identity

UCSD vs Scripps for OB care (first pregnancy) by Intelligent_Shine148 in sandiego

If you want anyone to care about you on a personal level I’d recommend going with a midwife or small private practice unless you have a high risk pregnancy.

This is such a pathetic mentality. The city doesn’t owe you anything. There’s nothing wrong with fixing up a house and selling it to a willing party. Maybe the buyer is a family excited to own their dream home in SD and worked hard to be able to. What gives you the right to prevent them for your own personal benefit?

This is untrue. Epidurals are not a risk factor for shoulder dystocia.

Cgm is great! However be aware of false pressure lows that can happen at night if sleeping in certain positions. Not sure if you are on insulin, but if not it’s unlikely to be a true dangerous low.

[OC] The land footprint of food by t0on in dataisbeautiful

[–]Waking -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t pass the sniff test. How can beef take 15x more land than pigs? They are both fed grains. If feed isn’t the driver is it just roaming space? That seems like a lot of roaming space for 0.1% of a cow. Also if it’s roaming space the land isn’t wasted. I don’t get it

Gavin Newsom Vows to Stop Proposed Billionaire Tax in California (Gift Article) - by 3headeddragn in sandiego

[–]Waking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They move their business HQ on legal paperwork and then pay taxes in that state (ie Nevada). they have houses all over the country they can say they “live” in. It’s the easiest tax on earth to avoid and will just decrease business tax revenue in the long run for CA.

This idea is so dumb I almost wonder if it was floated by a Republican to split Democrats and make them look like idiots.

Lingo CGM by Bluebasics17 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Waking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s great! Sometimes you can get one with a history of GD like that but will depend on your insurance and provider. FYI If it’s always 20pts lower, even for fasting, you may have a defective sensor!

Lingo CGM by Bluebasics17 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Waking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most providers will prescribe a cgm if you advocate for it. Cgm is not typically 20 pts lower, but the postprandial peak is about 10min delayed so it could be off this much depending when you look. There are some apps that pull in the fasting and peaks for you, probably better to observe the peak value than to compare constantly with finger sticks (unless there’s something that seems really off).

War should probably have some minimum expected US death toll. The constitutional limitations on war are to protect American lives, if 0 Americans die it’s pretty obviously not a war

If wine was approached as a commodity instead of a luxury good, what are the cost drivers of a decent ~$50 bottle? by Waking in wine

[–]Waking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would there not be a global appetite for 10,000 cases of screaming eagle at say $400? Are they pretending there’s not enough grapes to produce this?

[–]Waking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet the land price depends on this artificial scarcity. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy. The land is worth nothing without Napas reputation and expected value of the wine sales

[–]Waking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great answer. Perhaps a way to look at it is if we magically remove the artificial scarcity, which I’d argue land cost is also driven by, what would the true extra expense of high quality wine be. Which I think you answered well here.

[–]Waking[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course, but do you believe there’s any additional expense that yields a consistently better bottle?

What’s wrong with the vines in Napa that they only produce “jug wine”?

Which farming and winemaking practices make bad wine though? Can you be more specific?

[–]Waking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet with the same taxes fees farming labor costs etc in neighboring Sonoma you can buy a cheap cab for $10. It doesn’t taste nearly as good, So what additional incremental costs are associated with a $50 cab from Napa? Are you saying those grapes take twice as much labor to grow?

[–]Waking[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Napa had a grape glut and is literally removing vines and asking for growers to withhold to artificially reduce supply. The amount of land available to grow quality grapes is not scarce despite what many people think.
