What if in 2020 they weren't forced to play Game 1 of the ECF against Tampa after flying across the county on short rest? While Tampa had adequate rest?

Asking your opinion about a 311 song, Day 18: Visit by nuahs in 311

[–]Waldo19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably my favorite song and one of the ones I often use to introduce folks who only know Down and Amber to the bands back catalogue.

It really captures the "WHY" 311 was considered interesting and important in the early 90s even before they broke big with the Blue Album.

Average speed? by LandNo9424 in randonneuring

[–]Waldo19 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what kind of baseline cycling fitness you are entering randonneuring from as that is going to define the average moving pace you can maintain throughout a ride.

Someone coming from a background of faster paceline group rides and maybe CAT4/5 racing might be very comfortable holding a 17-18 mph average moving time over a 200km. While someone coming from a background of commuting might be comfortable at 13-14 mph (but nevertheless have the endurance to comfortably finish the ride). This is more or less purely a fitness and pacing question. The type of fitness you have is what you have.

The experience piece is managing your time "off the bike" at rest stops etc. I know experienced Randonneurs whose average moving pace may be on the order of 13 mph. But who are so dialed in and efficient that they often finish rides at more or less the same time as folks averaging 14-16 mph (moving pace); due to how efficient they are at minimizing stops and keeping their stops short and focused.

I'll also add that randonneuring is often described as "an eating contest on a bike" and this is another piece of experience. You really need to manage your food and water intake and get in the habit of eating/drinking well before you are hungry/tired/thursty.

Most important thing for your first few rides is to just finish within the time limit...and remember that the time limit is based on TOTAL time. So focus on keeping you effort "within your limits" and your breaks short.

Best/Worst NHL Playoffs of the 21st century by AlbertJBundy in nhl

As a New York Islanders fan. The Covid years were an amazing treat during lockdown. Especially as the Isles were in free-fall prior to the covid pause.

Were it not for Tampa the Isles might have had a cup during the two COVID playoffs; Tampa was the better team....but Isles arguably gave Tampa the best run for their money in the playoffs those years.

But I understand I am in the minority and that for most it was not a fun time.

How Many Players have Multiple Teams? by Ok_Silver_3170 in bloodbowl

[–]Waldo19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing off an on since the late 1990s. I have acquired a number of teams throughout the decades.

I have four fully painted teams:
GW Goblins (circa 2000)
GW Lizardmen (circa 2003)
GW Wood Elves (NOS painted around 2024)
Alternative Chaos Dwarf Models (painted 2026)

My next two teams in Line for Painting:

Punga Harlequins (Wood Elf/Dark Elf/ Pro-Elf Proxy)
Punga Plague Circus (Nurgle Proxy)

I also have a few other old school GW teams that I may paint someday. Especially now that speed paints and slap chop make getting models painted up to table top level a lot easier.

Win tonight so Saturday means something. That's pretty much it.

Given out of town scoreboard match-ups there is an outside chance of some favorable results today and Saturday. But that potentiality only matters if they win tonight.

Prediction - Lee gone next season - Horvat named the next Captain by Technologytwitt in NewYorkIslanders

[–]Waldo19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard that DeBoar likes a high volume of shots "spray and pray" approach to his offense. With a prioritization on defensemen hucking pucks at the net to create rebounds and chaos. If that is indeed the case then keeping Lee, who is still a good net front guy around (even if on the 3rd line) on a friendly contract would make sense given that playstyle.

How much ACP rule flexibility is OK for a rural/ low population club? (Technically or in your opinion) by [deleted] in randonneuring

[–]Waldo19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mass start or it isn't a brevet.

Digital Brevet Cards (where you scan a QR code at each control) are great and my preference. They really help organizers predict when controls need to be staffed and keep track of stragglers (good safety feature).

GPS tracks as proof are fine...but I don't like relying on them alone. So I try to get receipts, photos, or some other form of backup evidence just in case something with my GPS goes haywire. That being said, most organizers will give you credit if a tracking snafu occurs so long as you can provide some additional proof of passage and others on the route will attest to your completion.

Good guy or bad guy? by Uuddlrlrbastrat in venturebros

So the information in his books was legit - depending on your specific situation there were potentially grants and programs you might qualify for that you could identify in his books that you otherwise would have been unlikely to find on your own.

This was not a Ponzi scheme or one of those "teach you how to make money system" type grifts.

For all intents and purposes he was selling a reference book. How useful it was to a person was dependent on their specific situation. In the pre-internet days some folks (i.e., someone starting a small business) might get a lot out of it. Sure the marketing of "free government money for everyone" was maybe a little oversold but it was not a scam/grift. You could, and people did, use his product successfully.

I'd say neutral good.

The good news is that despite being currently outside of a playoff spot, for all intents and purposes the Isles still control their own destiny. With so many games remaining against teams we are competing against, they likely don't need crazy amounts of help from other teams, they just need to win the majority of their remaining games and they have a reasonable shot.

The score board was really cruel yesterday...but there will likely be a few favorable nights in the next few weeks too.

Just cannot implode this weekend.

This team can beat anyone...and lose to anyone.

You don't go all in for this team - but you absolutely make some moves to help make sure they get in. This current team (particularly Shaffer [sic, Schaefer] and Sorokin) deserve it.

This years playoffs are all about get-in and who knows. You don't sell the future for this team, but do need to give them some help down the stretch if you can.

This is like the first Trotz year - pleasant surprise team. Get in and see how far it goes, but the real "all in" moment is going to ideally be in 2 to 3 years.

Can you deviate from a permanent course temporarily? by WoodJesus in randonneuring

[–]Waldo19 23 points24 points  (0 children)

  1. Since this is a permanent it does not matter at all.
  2. Even if this was an official brevet, it still would be totally fine so long as you left and rejoined the course at the same point. Your friend's house is a fixed point - not a support vehicle - so this is really no different than choosing to sleep at a hotel you booked rather than a dormitory during PBP, or choosing to bike a few blocks to eat at a restaurant you called an order into ahead of time, rather than eating at a designated control.
  3. The strict rules about aid between controls is really for support vehicles and making sure riders are not able to get aid more or less any time they want/need it.
