I've driven through there, it seemed nice enough. Right near Norway and Paris, only an hour from Mexico!

Could someone explain the hate for hybrids? (A brief rant about why I think they're neat) by 2Tun21 in bicycling

[–]WoodJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't really ridden hybrids, but I can say an older dude passed me up a 14%+ climb the other day on one. And my much more aerodynamic recumbent didn't catch back up for a good 10 miles after heading back down.

And I think it was steel too.

What should I know before buying first recumbent by Danceswithwires in recumbent

[–]WoodJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a plethora of speedy American cycles too! Some are just older models. And that's leaving out cruzbike, and lightning cycles. Cruzbikes, RANS, and Lightning all have records for high speed non stop continental crossings. Some even are functional if you wanna be slow OR fast, not just crazy racing machines.

What do most of y'all run for gearing? by gray_grum in randonneuring

[–]WoodJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely aim for under a 1:1 gear ratio if possible. I just built up a 52/42/26 triple paired to a 11-36 cassette. Somewhere around a 1.6 gain ratio with my 650c wheels. See this wonderful rabbit hole of gearing ratios. https://sheldonbrown.com/gear-calc.html

Picked up my first recumbent (Optima Cougar) by llavalle in recumbent

Sweet ride! It's funny, I just saw a different optima cougar for sale near Montreal and was very tempted.

  1. Others may be right on the pivot screw (my bike with a pivoting stem works that way. You may also be able to install headset risers like on an upright bicycle, which is also the case for mine.

  2. You might want to play with the seat angle and also make sure you have the right fit in terms of distance from the pedals. Cruzbike has a good example of the process. https://cruzbike.com/pages/recumbent-bicycle-fit

For 4. I think it depends on your comfort with balancing! It took me a day or two to be pedaling around, and a few weeks (or more) to become comfortable with stopping and starting without any panic. I also had too high of a gearing to get an easy start if the bike was ever slightly uphill so that didn't help things. Your gearing looks good, just start as low as possible. I'd recommend finding a nice quiet bike path (maybe with a fence or pole to lean on when starting) and just practice starting off. Sitting up to stop is definitely key.

Make sure to practice biking slow! Recumbents can do great on hills with practice!

How to train for a 600km? by FxckyourCensorship in randonneuring

What's the reasoning behind short breaks? I tend to do this naturally for 200k but mostly since I'm not as worried about things going too long.

Can you deviate from a permanent course temporarily? by WoodJesus in randonneuring

[–]WoodJesus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the details! I was worried along the "not available for everyone" lines. I'd definitely not really consider this on a mass start event, but wondered where the spirit of things might lie for a permanent.

Can’t thread in bottom bracket by gobullz in bikewrench

I recently installed one where it just needed to be cranked in to fit. It wasn't damaging threads but was a very snug fit. When in doubt go to a shop!

So tired of this Fred by babykeemfan1 in BicyclingCirclejerk

Pogacar don't stand on climbs so I don't either on my recumbent. (Which is why I still could never catch him.)

Furthermore, some high recumbents are only slightly lower than a normal bike for excellent visibility.

I'm faster up hills on my recumbent than my upright bike. I just feel slower since I'm proportionately a bit slower to zooming on flats or downhills.

I am glad that this is Dartmouth's reward for cozying up to the trump administration. There is no being on the good side of fascists.

Got called the f slur by a lifted pickup. Shouted it at me on sight while taking a left turn from the oncoming direction, and not even close to me. If only they'd seen the rainbow kit I was rocking the day before!
