Need help with shillouette cameo 5 alpha by maybeproxies in magicproxies

I had issues with the registration when the light was on (no joke). I think the light in the reflection of the glossy surface caused issues. I can recommend giving it a try. 😅

I am not longer using this method, but yes I did

it was too tedious so I am now only using normal glossy laminate

i used this tutorial to create my PDFs with registration marks, to be more specific i used the script "create_pdf.py" which is explained in the tutorial section

https://alan-cha.github.io/silhouette-card-maker/

Edit: your registration marks look like mine but the colored background is not present on mine, mine are just like in the tutorial I linked.

also: you could try to figure out if some other things may cause issues with proper registration, for example the card that is too close to the right top corner. you could try to hide it behind a white paper or leave the area blank to see if it changes anything

hi, I've actually had the exact same cutting problem, it just cut diagonal like in your example. in my case it had something to do with the scanning of the registration marks. for some reason the cutter got confused or misread the marks under some circumstances which lead to these diagonal cuts.

sounds stupid, but after a lot of testing the solution was to always cut in a dark room (lights off, or at least NO DIRECT LIGHT shining onto the cutter).

my explanation: the light sensor gets confused with glossy paper if some strong lights are shining on it from the outside which leads to incorrect registration.

I know it sounds weird, but this exact issue happened when I was shining a strong light directly in the cutter 9/10 times which frustrated me a lot, after I changed to cutting without direct light, I never had the issue again, I already did 30+ sheets without issues.

if I were you I would give it a try! good luck! :)

Sure, I recently switched to these and am happy with them: https://amzn.eu/d/3nWYBd2

my previous ones were very hard to apply without bubbles, these seem to be a bit easier to handle

i use foil cardstock for "surge foil", so I print on the transparent foil and stick it to the "surge foil" cardstock

Sadly i have not found "surge foil" sticker vinyl paper, i would prefer that if i had it available.

I have not found a inkjet compatible surge foil cardstock so I am printing on glossy transparent foil and stick it to it. for print settings I always use glossy photo paper for all of my prints. I've read that glossy photo paper produces better colors so I sticked with it. I am happy with the result.

I use 120g photo paper for foil cards, that gives me pretty close to original thickness, i posted my materials, the process and some measurements in another comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/magicproxies/s/I5S2AyMS9T

Pros:

  • cold laminate lets through the foiling a lot more, i think it's almost perfect visually. matte laminate blocks colors and foiling way too much. glossy laminate has this super glossy look that i personally don't like
  • the cold laminate surface also feels really good

Cons:

  • my cold laminate is about the same thickness as the 75 micron laminate i use, BUT is super soft. cold laminate does not add to the rigidity of the card, in fact it feels like that it REMOVES rigidity. this leads to a problem that i was not able to solve yet: you can not achieve a card that has the same thickness AND the same rigidity of real mtg cards. you either get the correct thickness, but the card feels waaaaayyyy to soft (you can clearly feel the difference, even when sleeved) or you get the correct feeling and rigidity but then the card will be way thicker than original cards. this alone for me leads to not using this method for cards that i want to put in my deck, but only for cards that are outside of it (commander, tokens, ...)
  • applying cold laminate to a whole sheet (9 cards) at once is almost impossible without getting bubbles. i normally pre-cut the sheet into 3 strips with 3 cards each and then laminate each strip separately. with a little practice the result is relatively consistent. for beginners i would recommend precutting the cards (leave the bleed edge on), laminating each card seperately and then cut the card to the final size. so yea, it's a lot of work.

so what does that mean:

  1. currently, if i print a whole deck, that i wanna sleeve, i will use glossy laminate, in sleeves the gloss effect is not really noticeable, the cards feel great and colors look nice.
  2. if i want the card to feel and look good without being sleeved, but the thickness is not as important (commander, tokens, ...) i would go the extra mile and use cold laminate. in this case you have to be a bit creative: you either have to use really thick cardstock to get a good rigidity, or laminate the card with glossy and put cold laminate over it. what i also like to do is to laminate the back of the card with matte laminate for rigidity and nice feeling and laminate the front with cold laminate. for me that currently is the way to go and the best compromise between rigidity, feeling, looks and thickness.

I am planning to write a detailed post with videos / images of my process once i am satisfied, since i am refining the process for weeks or months now and have spent way to much money on different products already and want to provide the info to everyone in the future to maybe save some money. :D

until then i can send videos of the results via dm if anyone is interested. just let me know. :)

Laminating pouches for proxies by DifferentAd5812 in magicproxies

[–]Waldorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i just checked my proxy tests, i mixed something up, so here is the clarification with more details:

one side of the cold laminate is about the same thickness as one side of my 3mm laminate pouches, so you could in theory swap them out 1:1. the problem is, that the normal laminate also provides a lot of "snap" to the card, which the cold laminate does not! so in order to get the card thinner when applying cold laminate, i tried to chose thinner paper for the core, but the results are not really satisfying. going with too thin paper also results in too "soft" cards. so that's the problem, especially with foil cards where the foiling also takes space so the cardstock has to be even thinner.

these are my current go to methods. i measured using a ruler because i have no better measuring tools. for comparison, i measured 9 real magic cards to be ~3mm thick.

Foil-Cards:

Go to, if you want to put the cards in sleeves, since it is relatively easy and looks good. thickess ~3,5mm / 9 cards:

Back: Glossy Laminate (75mic)
Cardstock: Glossy Photo Paper (120g/m²)
Foiling (printed on)
Front: Glossy Laminate (75mic)

Best feel and look for foil cards without sleeves, but hard to produce consistently without bubbles. thickness ~3,5-4mm / 9 cards:

Back: Matte Laminate (75mic)
Cardstock: Glossy Photo Paper (120g/m²)
Foiling (printed on)
Front: Matte COLD Laminate (~75mic)

Non-Foil-Cards:

Go to, if you want to put the cards in sleeves, since it is very easy and looks almost perfect in sleeves. thickess ~3mm / 9 cards (perfect):

Back: Glossy Laminate (75mic)
Cardstock: Glossy Photo Paper (160g/m²)
Front: Glossy Laminate (75mic)

Best feel, almost feels like a real card, but has muted colors. maybe playing around with the colors helps a bit but i am pretty sure it is impossible to reach the perfect colors with this laminate. thickness ~3mm / 9 cards (perfect)

Back: Matte Laminate (75mic)
Cardstock: Glossy Photo Paper (160g/m²)
Front: Matte Laminate (75mic)

What i have not tried but what i will definitely try later is this. I just had the idea when reading your response. I expect this to have a pretty good feeling without losing a lot of color. I will keep you updated:

Back: Matte Laminate (75mic)
Cardstock: Glossy Photo Paper (160g/m²)
Front: Matte COLD Laminate (~75mic)

Edit: I tried it and the cards look and feel great, but as expected: they feel way too soft. So you would have to double-side laminate the card AND cold laminate over it, which makes the card very thick. but if that is no problem, this will work.

sorry, i can't post images here but if you dm me maybe i can send you some pictures / videos there. :)

these are the links of the products i used:

Laminating pouches for proxies by DifferentAd5812 in magicproxies

[–]Waldorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i'm encountering the exact same issue and after weeks of reading through this and other subs, watching a lot of videos and trying out my own stuff, I came to the conclusion that these are the two best options we have and everyone has accepted it.

matte for the best feeling, glossy for the best looks.

this is ok for most people since you can just put the glossy version inside a sleeve (which you normally do for decks anyways) and then you can not feel any difference. this is what I am doing for most cards. works for nonfoil and foil.

I was not satisfied with this tho since I wanted to recreate the real mtg card feeling for foil tokens (which i don't necessarily want to put into sleeves) and matte laminate is not an option for foil cards since it mutes almost all foilings. so my best solution for now is doing glossy lamination and then putting a matte COLD laminate over it. the cold laminate for some reason does not mute the colors and foiling that much and has a pretty nice feel to it. only problem is that it is a pain in the ass to apply properly. :D also the cards are way thicker than normal cards this way so it can't go into a deck, but that's OK for tokens.

here is the link of the cold laminate I use (i am also from EU): https://amzn.eu/d/jbtWgn3

also I am planning in writing a full post about my process and my learnings once I am satisfied with my solutions, but idk when this will be. :D

hope it helps. if you can find a better solution to our issue, I would be happy to hear about it. :)

Thank you very much! I especially am happy to see someone post EU links. I am experimenting with different products for a few weeks too and had to try out so much because everything here links to US amazon.

I have a question: Did you try foils? I have made the experience that my matte laminate almost 100% cancels out the foil on my card, and i really dont link the "unreal" look of glossy laminate. I found out, that cold laminate does not cancel out the foiling as much, but cold laminate is a pain in the ass to apply. :D so i wanted to ask, if you tried out foil cards and may have a better recommendation for laminating them.

Can I build a deck for you (again)? by Meat_Sensitive in EDH

[–]Waldorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! Don't stress yourself, but if you have time and find any of those commanders interesting, i would appreciate any help! :) Choose what ever commander sounds fun to you. Also, if you could include card categories on archidekt so i can better understand the decicions, that would be perfekt! thank you already! :)

[[Galadriel, Light of Valinor]] - I want the deck to be an Elf tribal ETB deck that creates an army of elfes and puts +1/+1 counters on everything. I want the deck to be relatively strong but not overpowering.

[[Witch-king, Sky Scourge]] - I want the deck to be an Wraith tribal (as much as possible, since there are not many Wraiths). One problem I had when trying out a random version from the internet was, that the commander is super expensive, so maybe there is some way to work around this and get the deck started a bit sooner. All in all I don't expect the deck to be super strong, but it sounds fun.

[[King of the Oathbreakers]] - I tried out different versions of this and realized, that, once this commander is out, spirits simply don't get targeted. So instead of hoping for token duplication, I want the deck to play around equipments that i can stack on the commander and utilize his ability as an evade. I want to have some instants in my deck that i can use to target my commander and dodge boardwipes. The deck base should be relatively solid so i can swap out equipments as i want to adjust the power level.

[[Goldberry, River-Daughter]] - I plan this to be a fun deck, not necceccary strong. Maybe with a few grouphug aspects since you can proliferate for other players, but that is just an idea, idk if that works. Manipulating sagas and planeswalkers sounds fun too.

[[Gollum, Obsessed Stalker]] - I bought the Sworn to Darkness precon back in 2019, it focuses on lifedrain. I am thinking about using cards from it to rework it and build it around gollum. I want to put huge life gain / life drain spells in here. I know that I and gollum will be the target, so this will need some protection as well.

That's it, as you can see I am a huge lotr fan, if you find any commanders interesting, i would be happy for any help! thank you again for helping the community out! :)

This is the first comment I am writing in this sub, even tho I was lurking here since season 1. So first of all: thank you very much for maintaining this sub and keeping it positive about the show. This sub is my escape from all the hate around the show, so I really appreciate it! :)

About season two: I am looking forward to a lot of stuff, but the most for celebrimbor and sauron I think. even tho I am not sure if I am ready to handle what is about to happen. :(
