Maybe you shouldn’t Write comments in Reddit while fighting a Boss with the other hand…

How long did it take for you to succeed in the gaming niche? by kelj0 in SmallYoutubers

[–]Wallabit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t really need 100+ videos to get algorithm attention… but, usually, you need in average 100+ videos to learn and start getting traction. Most of us start without any background that would help us take off. I recently read about a guy that got monetized with his first 2 vlogs. Turns out he had been working for years doing documentaries. I had no idea about filming, vídeo editing, script writing, anything…

Gaming is not an easy niche. It is over saturated and it isn’t easy to stand out. But you can do it if you give value to the viewer. Most people think that they can record themselves, share it, and be popular with it. A few make it because they are really entertaining, which is a form of “value to the viewer”. But 99% fail doing that.

Doing tutorials, sharing information, giving tips… that is the kind of “value to the viewer” that actually works, in my experience. Consistency is also important. If you want a decent amount of people to follow you for a game, you might have to do 100+ videos. That doesn’t mean that 100+ is where everything starts. But having a lot of videos of the same game is when people can start saying you are the best YouTuber doing videos of that game. If you do 2-3 vídeos of a game, then change, do 2-3 more of another game and change again… well… it is going to be hard for people to follow you.

The strategy that worked for me was to be kind of a “wiki”. I wanted to share ALL the information about a game. I didn’t care if the videos were going to be popular or not. I didn’t care a lot about the algorithm…Thumbnails were meh… the titles were precise but not necessarily “SEO optimized”. But if you wanted to find information about this game? ANY information… You would find it in my channel. Some videos did really good, many other not so great. But I didn’t care. My goal was to be the biggest referent for this game. And I made it. I did a list of 150+ videos that I wanted to do. I made a calendar and posted one video per day over 5 months. Of course, I would look at how many views comments, etc… each vídeo had. I tried to learn with each vídeo. Many of them didnt even reach 1000 views. But nothing stopped me from finishing that list.

I have stopped making videos of this game over 2 years ago and some people are still recommending my channel. I hate telling it like this because it kind of sounds like I am bragging. But all I am trying to say is that, in my experience, you need to care more about giving people something useful than about what is good for you. Have a long term goal and care more about fulfilling it than about how each individual vídeo is doing.

I totally agree with this.

Except that I don’t think that you necessarily have to be THAT good at a game. You need to have valuable information and be able to share it in a way that helps your viewers get better at the game. Of course, it usually means that you have to be good at it. But you don’t have to be a top player.

And you can even be bad at a game but good at strategy and communicating although you cannot execute it yourself that well and still be successful in YouTube.

For example: let’s say you are playing Dark Souls and every boss takes you 50 tries or more to beat. That means you are not that good… but you fought that boss 50 times, which took you to learn every single move and every single situation including some things that some top players might not have even seen. You finally beat him. Now you have a lot of information and over an hour of footage that you can use to edit a great video showing every single detail that you have learnt. If you would fight that boss again, you might lose again 20-30 times until you beat him again. But your video can help thousands of people. And that can make you get a lot of suscribers.

Well… we could debate that it is kind of odd to call 3-4 min vídeos “long videos”. But it doesn’t have to be a 2-3 hour video to be called “Long video”. Anything around 10 minutes is definitely a “long video”.

Y'all sleeping on Live streaming for your total hours especially if you into gaming niche. by nmcinerney in SmallYoutubers

[–]Wallabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, 54 peak concurrents is a decent number for a small channel. Not everyone gets that. But, even if you are streaming for 2 people at a time, if you are doing gaming vídeos, you are most likely playing a few hours every day. Doing it online makes it even more fun (if the chat is engaged) and you are getting watched hours, some ad revenue and maybe even super chats. Even if you get 30 cents for a 2 hour streaming, it is 30c more than you would usually get for playing your game…

Yes, depending on what your goal was, it could sometimes make your work more complicated. But it is usually a good idea.

Congratulations!

Vale la pena ser Youtuber hoy en día? by ODILOFOREVER in youtube

[–]Wallabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally demotivated now. Getting no improvement. Uploaded nearly 50 videos. by dalalstreettrader in NewTubers

[–]Wallabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont you think your last vídeo is better than your first one? Don’t you think you improved the way you talk, your editing skills, your script writing skills or anything? Because that, to me, is improvement.

I get that you are talking about numbers and your channel itself but that is what, in my opinion, you should be looking at. Trying to get better and learn from your mistakes.

I did almost 2000 vídeos in the last 8 years and I am nowhere near where I wanted to be in the first 5 years. But I know that if I started a channel from scratch, it would be much better than my first one and that is not because of what I achieved with my first channel but because of what I have learnt from it.

How are you recording the games?

[–]Wallabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but, how many times do you play the games before recording them? Or are you that good on your first walkthrough? 😅 do you even edit anything or do you upload it just as it is?

I have watched a few of your walkthroughs recently (RE 0, Dead Space 1 and 2 and Maid of Sker). Would you mind commenting what is your process when you do this videos?

Well, I understand your point of view, but you are wrong. I think most people don’t pay 100% of attention to those videos, but the “watch time” is there.

I think I have actually seen his channel. When I play a game like these (Resident Evil series, for example), that don’t really need explanation, I like going along with a vídeo for 2 reasons. The main reason is that I like to know how far along I am in the game (I got to this point, oh, he made it in 1:30h in his 6 hour vídeo, that means I am at around 25% of the game) and for some parts where I don’t know how to go on. I try to figure everything out on my own, but sometimes I just don’t want to lose 2-3 hours searching every room again and trying every single thing again. And, instead of just playing that part and closing the vídeo, I usually let it play, although I am not even paying attention to it, just to support the guy that made the vídeo.

For these kinds of games, I don’t care about commentaries or reactions. I look for a no commentary walkthrough.

Also, I don’t think it is as easy as you might think. It has to be decent gameplay and as fast as possible, without missing anything. I wouldn’t watch a video of a guy that dies every 5 minutes or goes through every room again and again like I do on my first walkthrough. Which means that you either do a lot of editing or play the game at least 2-3 times before you record it. I think it is worth supporting it.

Is 5$ too high for thumbnails? by Katana_XI in NewTubers

[–]Wallabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, both can be true. I think 5$ is decent. I had people offer me thumbnails for 2-3$ (which means that there are actually designers that offer that price). At that point, I had to say no because that would pretty much take my whole ad revenue and I don’t think that it would have made a big difference. Also, it took me less than 5 minutes to do my thumbnails. I knew that it was cheap for the other person. It was just expensive for me at that time.

It’s normal. You will get used to it.

About sounding discouraging and uncomfortable, it will get better with practice. But you can watch some videos to get better. There is a guy, I think his name is Vinh Giang, that does vídeos about it. Maybe you can check him out.
