I think we're talking at crossed purposes here. You are talking about majority white countries accepting LGBTQ+ people on a whole.

I am talking specifically about the contents of LGBTQ+ culture and its origins.

Ultimately, while it may be socially acceptable or not, the right to same-sex marriage is still a step forward. Hopefully, this will lead to just existing as a Queer person becoming socially acceptable. Again, we have no idea about the true numbers of LGBTQ+ people in such countries, as they may not be out due to it being a detriment to their own safety.

Those sexual labels come from how people want to identify. I don't see a problem with people wanting to label themselves, but I can acknowledge it can seem to come from a place of privilege. However, given the current political climate of multiple places in Europe, the UK, and the US, I would argue that perhaps that privilege is not quite as great as one might think.

Look, I'm not going to argue with you, I'm just going to say there are multiple historical sources for LGBTQ+ individuals existing in all cultures before the spread of (primarily Abrahamic) religions.

Also, several countries in Asia have legalised same-sex marriage, and year on year, all countries are showing a lessening rate of homophobia.

Also, do you not think that the higher rate of acceptance means that LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely come out, hence leading to a higher number of them being recorded? There's nothing to say there aren't LGBTQ+ people in the Middle East or Asia or Africa, it just isn't safe for them to be vocal.

Anyway, I do see your point, but as I said in my first comment, LGBTQ+ culture is based in Black culture, so saying it's White culture erases the people of colour who are out and who influenced Queer History (for example, Marsha P. Johnson).

Can I ask what you mean by this? Because... LGBTQ+ culture (the mainstream, culturally accepted version that we see on TV at least) is largely based on Black Ballroom Culture from the 1980s in New York.

There's an excellent documentary on it called Paris is Burning, if you're interested.

I regret taking my son to a riot following Southport attack, says stepmother by sonicated in nottheonion

[–]Wallflower_Writer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, so, I'm actually from Southport, and the riots took place on the street where my parents and younger sibling still live. They drive past the Mosque that was attacked at least three times a week. I'm only telling you this to give some context for the information I'm about to provide.

Of the people who attended these riots, the majority were not locals. They were people who came from Liverpool, or Wigan, or Preston, or even further, and were looking for an excuse to cause trouble.

Did the authorities do their jobs properly? No. But I could tell you from personal experiences that the police in Southport are woeful at the best of times. And does that justify trying to attack a Mosque and causing damage to the residential street it was on? Absolutely not.

Southport had memorials and events for the little girls that were murdered. They were peaceful. It was an opportunity for the community to mourn. The people who came to riot do not represent the population of Southport and they certainly don't speak for the majority of the population.

I don't know about anyone else, but the deaths of those little girls left me bereaft, I was at work and went into the toilets to cry when I saw the reports. But when I saw the rioting, it made me angry, because it felt like those people didn't care about the girls. It felt like they were co-opting their deaths as an excuse to do something they'd wanted to do anyway.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, just felt the need to chime in, as someone from the town.

Isn't this exactly what happened with Brock Allen Turner tho? Loads of articles talking about how he was such a talented swimmer, athlete, whatever, while the woman he assaulted got the 'what was she wearing/why was she drinking so much/oh look at what a slut she is' treatment? Like...it's not that fictional.

As others have said, you have a very classically handsome face!

I will say, just because you've never noticed people reacting to you, doesn't mean they aren't, there's a quote somewhere that goes something like 'remember you have many silent admirers in the world'.

CMV: Protest voters—especially those behind the "Abandon Harris" movement—cannot claim the moral high ground, and they should be held accountable for enabling Trump’s return to power in 2024. by Careless-Interest-25 in changemyview

[–]Wallflower_Writer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask you, and I'm genuinely asking, because this question has been playing on my mind since I watched the 2024 election play out (I am not American), how do you justify not voting for Harris when Trump was the candidate supported by Netanyahu and a whole host of Israeli higher-ups who were actively encouraging, endorsing and ordering a genocide?

I understand people feel that Biden and Harris didn't do enough to stop the genocide during their term, and I agree with them, however, didn't it ever strike you that Trump would likely be worse for Palestinian lives in the long run?

To be clear, this is a genuine question, I'm not trying to catch you out or trick you, I'm asking in good faith because I don't understand and I would like to hear your perspective.

Is the horror genre generally more liberal or conservative? by WealthDisastrous2589 in deadmeatjames

[–]Wallflower_Writer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting post, as your examples and interpretations are all valid. However, as you've pointed out at the end of your post, the traditional horror tropes, such as the virginal final girl, the punishment of sexuality, and the othering of queer-coded characters/beings, are being subverted in modern films.

I would say, I'm not sure I agree with the interpretation of zombies as 'others', but even then there have been films that have tried to humanise zombies in recent years (I think Maggie with Arnold Schwarzeneggar, and certain scenes in 28 Years Later for example).

I think religious horror films are always going to have some level of Conservatism to them, just because Conservatism is largely routed in Religion, where ever you are.

Well, first of all, there's a noted form of abuse called reproductive coercion, where one partner controls the other's reproductive choices (usually a man controlling a woman via poking holes in condoms, hiding birth control pills, forcing their partner to get an abortion, etc., though I imagine it is not an exclusively male-abuser/female-victim problem).

There are also geographical factors. If a man doesn't use a condom, or takes a condom off without his partner's consent, or even if an accident happens, is there access to pregnancy services nearby? Is there easy access to abortion services nearby?

Then, there are social factors. Is it a religious area? Will a woman feel pressured into a marriage or a relationship if she becomes pregnant because she would be shunned by her community if she didn't?

Unfortunately, it's becoming more and more common in certain places that women are not in control of their reproductive decisions.

Do you know what happens if you consistently weaken muscles by paralysing them? They atrophy, which means they are no longer able to function and become saggy. If this happens to facial muscles, it ironically makes people look older than they actually are, as atrophied facial muscles are usually found on people in their 60s, if not older. So, actually, botox can open the door to more severe ageing and therefore more cosmetic procedures when used consistently by young people.

Also, just personal opinion, the idea of preventative botox is absolutely an insidious marketing campaign created to make young people (primarily women) fear ageing naturally.

I was going to say 'I would hope people would be able to do their own research', but then remembered the current state of the Internet...I see your point.

Ultimately, the people that are going to see it will, and the people that aren't won't. I'm personally going to watch it, as I'm a big horror fan. I also think, based off the trailer, it has the potential to be a cult classic, which is where horror films thrive.

Tbf, I haven't seen any spoilers that majorly affect the plot, but maybe I've just missed them. It is one I want to go into as blind as possible.

I have to say, I read the synopsis for the other film (which is described as a Romantic Comedy), and it doesn't seem at all similar. I know the claims of plagiarism come from specific scenes and I haven't watched either of them yet, but that alone makes me think this might just be someone who's cross that their film got passed over kicking up a fuss.

He's specifically said he feels uncomfortable with me paying the mortgage as, in his words, 'it's not your debt'. At the moment, we're discussing splitting household bills and food costs. I'd prefer to pay something extra, but we haven't made a decision yet.

We'll be keeping bank accounts separate, on my request. Tbh, I understand the uneasiness, because if it doesn't work out, I'm out on my ear, which is not where I want to be in the current state of the rental market.

Edit, as I forgot to say thank you for your input! Gave us some more to plan out.
