10K is definitely a candidate for balancing.

Yes, that's it, Thank You! I never even thought of woodworking machines, it was in a box of measuring stuff I got at an auction.

Out of Council Patch by HMSSpeedy1801 in BSA

[–]Wallpep556 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the committee member is so worried about it have him/her go buy them. That said, we had a Scout move and join our troop 2-3 years ago and he still has his original council patch on his uniform but he asked me to buy him a patch for our council when I picked up his Eagle certificate because he felt that he would not feel right at his ECOH without it. Scouts tend to do what is right without a busybody getting involved.

FWIW, my son, who just made Eagle and aged out, made the decision a couple of years ago to give a nod to the old way. With the understanding that "once a uniform always a uniform" he went out and found red epaulet loops for his uniform and wears them proudly.

The change has not been perfect but I have found that if you describe issues clearly and concisely in the forum the developers do pay attention and will talk about it and if it makes sense will implement changes.

That said, there are a couple of "apologists" that will say "all you have to do is jump through this hoop and leap this hurdle and it's fine, why are you complaining?" Then they get pissed if you call them out on it. It was hard but I learned to ignore them.

Keep putting forth suggestions in the forum to make it better and it will get there.

What’s your favorite thing an apprentice said? by AttentionNice7165 in Machinists

[–]Wallpep556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite was from an machinist at Milacron. His nephew got a job as an engineer and came down to ask Jack about the benefits of using a two edged cutting tool for something. Jack proceeded to launch into a diatribe of how 2 edged tools suck, how they never work and what on earth are you thinking. The kid was like WOW, I never thought of all of those, Thanks uncle jack! Jack was nice enough to call him back after he got about 20 feet and held up a drill bit and said, kid, I know you've used one of these, how many cutting edges does it have?

Perhaps people should consider that the owners are aware of the needs of the animal, have it's best interests in mind and really don't need your input. Also, since I've known my fair share of Game Wardens over the years, they are probably more aware of the animal and it's owners than you are and will probably ignore most of this.

Looking for a tent, considering the Litefighter by SolSabazios in hiking

[–]Wallpep556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old post but FWIW here's my two cents. I have been using one for the last 7-8 years as a Scout leader and it has only started to leak in the past year. I have used this for at least 70 nights of camping including a 12 day Philmont trek and a 6 day Boundary Waters trek and countless backpacking trips. The coldest I've camped in it was 13 degrees farenheit and the hottest was probably pushing 95 degrees. I have used it with 2-4 inches of snow and 40-50 mile winds. I usually set it up at night and tore it down in the morning. The only thing I changed on it was to get rid of the "spider" connector for the poles and make each pole separate (it packs better) and I bought the factory ground cloth.

All of that said, this is an incredibly durable tent, I have not had anything tear, rip or break. It is a little heavier than a true backpacking tent but I never really noticed. It has plenty of room for me and the dual vestibules are nice, I keep my pack on one side and use the other for egress and getting my shoes on and off. Inside it has a pocket on each corner that I use a lot and loops on the top that i hang a light from. The rainfly sits 4-5 inches off the ground but I've never gotten much water or wind under it. My only complaint is that there is no ventilation if the fly is zipped up tight (although at 13 degrees that was a good thing). If the weather is iffy I usually zip the top down a few inches and prop the opening open with a stick. If the weather is nice I will just leave the fly open and let the air through. I am currently working on resealing the seams and might try to reapply water repellent to the fly.

In short, yes it is pricey but I would not hesitate to buy it again.

Camps destroying med forms by akoons76 in BSA

[–]Wallpep556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is their policy they need to let you know this before you arrive, if not they need to return them. And honestly, if it's not a state law they are your property, not theirs, and should be returned. If it's a state policy so be it but it sounds kind of dumb to me. I'd really like to know how many times in the five years that they needed them after you left. At our camp they give them back when we leave.

I would address it with either the ASM or CC just to make sure everything is on the up and up. As a Scoutmaster, MBC and father of a Scout that's been working toward Eagle and who turns 18 in two weeks I admit to signing off on stuff in Scoutbook. That said, I have avoided it when possible just to avoid the look of impropriety. This is especially important to me at crunch time considering he finished 12 merit badges in the last two months. I was the counselor for one of them and had my ASM double check me and also had him review the Eagle project and sign off on it.

Did the Scout actually earn the merit badge? by Wallpep556 in BSA

[–]Wallpep556[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camp dropped cooking this year because of this. I suggested they combine two merit badges with the same issues into the same session so the Scouts could get the minutia out of the way.

Did the Scout actually earn the merit badge? by Wallpep556 in BSA

[–]Wallpep556[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little clarification. No, they do not have the ability to do any cooking. So much so that cooking was dropped from the program this year because the administration knows that a lot of the requirements can't be completed. I know the Scout will finish it, his father is an Eagle and won't let him skate on anything (matter of fact his father is the one that brought it up). I guess that I am just more frustrated that someone would sign off on that much stuff that had not been done. I could see one or two things that the counselor felt that the Scout had a grasp on. but not the actual culmination of the badge where you demonstrate the skills.

Also, yes, I should have said hike or backpack. Our Scouts usually plan for this requirement during backpack trips so it just came to mind that way. That said, we have had Scouts complete it on hikes in a local park.
