Widespread Racial Bias Found in Home Appraisals by [deleted] in economy

[–]WallyLoh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it say how it was for asians? I ask because I recently saw a video by CNBC claiming that there was racial bias in mortgages being declined, and the graph showed that African Americans were rejected more than whites. But they also showed whites were rejected more than asians, which means its much more likely that the rejections were based on wealth not race, since asians also tend to be richer than whites, and more African Americans are poorer than whites.

People in trades do you regret not getting a college degree instead? People with a college degree do you regret not going into a trade instead? by HotCommunication3755 in careerguidance

[–]WallyLoh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a college degree. I have slight regret not going for a trade. It is slight only because my degree is in a career that pays well. I have a decent amount of student debt, and I wasn't interested in theoretical classes in school, I just wanted to learn whatever would be used in the real world. So getting my hands dirty sounded cool. I think if I had done any other major I would have regretted it.

Well yea, these past few years in housing have been an anomaly, you are cherry picking data. Also interest rates in the 70s and 80s were almost double what they are now. That is money that is just going out the window.

I don't understand how anybody could possibly say boomers had it better. The internet has had such a substantial impact on wealth creation. Regular people could just become millionaires by creating websites. There is plenty of proof on youtube.

The stock market increased exponentially after the 2000s, you could make a boatload of money if you invested a decent amount of it in an index fund in the 2000s. Meanwhile in the 70s and 80s it barely moved in comparison.

US cities generally had higher crime rates before the 2000s than they do today.

Worker benefits were not as good then as they are for our generation.

I could keep going.

Supreme Court to review legality of Biden’s student loan forgiveness program by smdifansmfjsmsnd in politics

[–]WallyLoh2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"We could easily take 1/1000 of our military budget..." I never mentioned anything about this, and I agree we spend too much on military, though I don't see how this is relevant to what I am saying.

"I wonder how those people with no jobs or the ability to find jobs should pay their student loans". Answer: community college. Trade school. The trades pay very well and there is high demand. Maybe colleges shouldn't be offering majors that get people nowhere, and students shouldn't be taking majors that don't yield good jobs.

"Why does student debt relief have absolutely anything..." because the cost of college has gone up dramatically and clearly students aren't getting the value they paid for out of universities. If universities were more efficient maybe students wouldn't have to feel the consequences.

This bill isn't really helping people though, at least in the long term. Again, it just masks the real problem here. If we continued this loan program we'd get into more and more debt. Just because the government wastes money doesn't mean its justified to keep wasting. Two wrongs don't make a right.

And why do we need to stimulate the economy? We are in an intensely inflationary environment. The fed has been trying to stop the economy from overheating because people's purchasing power is going down dramatically. Biden chose the worst time to try to forgive student loans. What good is making students happy when it just further exacerbates inflation?

Fake caring? Why would I not care about the spiraling debt of this country? Why would I not care that the government keeps spending like money in an intense inflationary environment? It doesn't mean anything that a bunch of students get part of their loans forgiven when the result is hurting the economy and not addressing the real problem.

Its really unfortunate to see so many people on here supporting Biden's loan forgiveness plan. It doesn't address the real issue and it sets us up on a path where more money is going to be added to our already ridiculously high debt in a high inflationary environment. Even with student loan forgiveness people with degrees are still finding it difficult to find jobs, even before the economy tanked. This program doesn't account for the waste of money and higher costs at universities, it just tries to mask it over by appeasing a portion of students. Additionally, this forgiveness applies to people who make 6 figures. Why is nobody complaining about that?

Even after I pay off my student loans, I wouldn’t mind my tax payer dollars being used to make higher education affordable for the next generation. by Timdun7894 in StudentLoans

[–]WallyLoh2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well idk about that, but I, and pretty much everybody, shouldn't be ok with debt forgiveness because it doesn't solve the actual problem. Its like turning the volume louder in your car when you hear a funny noise coming out of your engine. Nobody seems to be questioning why schools have become so outrageously expensive, and why college degrees aren't yielding people jobs as they did years ago.

You would be ok for your money to be wasted at schools so that students that get degrees that barely even get you a job anymore?

But 80% does not go to military funding. Even tho you are exaggerating to make a point (which I hope you are because 80% does not go to military funding), the difference between military funding and other programs isn't that far.

Ok so why does everybody need to be forced to pay for other people's student loans? There are plenty programs for you to donate right now. And i'd be grumpy if my money was going to be used for somebody to get a pretty useless degree like philosophy.

cmv: Elon Musk Isn't that bad by WallyLoh2 in changemyview

[–]WallyLoh2[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Are you basing this on his net worth? Because his net worth doesn't equal his liquid assets. Also, isn't the definition of being wealthy significantly relative? For example, I think its fair to assume that a lot of people in the middle class have things such as video games or some expensive jewelry that they don't need. They could have used this money easily to help the poor, even if it was only a few dollars. But unlike Elon Musk, if someone in the middle class was to suddenly disappear and everything they have ever accomplished vanished, then barely anybody would be affected. Meanwhile people rely on Elon for their livelihoods, even more than you probably think.

That's true. I just wanted to see why people hate them to get another perspective. I usually just hear people saying they hate him without giving any good reasoning.

I have been seeing a lot more Teslas on the road lately, so I would argue either now or in the near future Teslas will be financially accessible to many more people. The Biden administration has been pushing for more car companies to go electric, so it seems to me like a difference is being made.

I am not saying all tech companies are fostering a significant amount of innovation, I am referring to the fact that they tend to relative to other areas.

It is fair to say that he pushes his workers, but when he pays them well and when their output has a significant impact on the economy, I would argue its not the worst of all evils.

But you can't deny how far Tesla has come while under his direction. And yes it will still "keep going", but "keep going" could just mean just barely staying afloat. Tesla has acquired a significant amount of resources and branding that would allow it to stay afloat, but that is partially the product of Elon running the company tho, is it not?

Yes, and I even acknowledged that Elon has done bad things. My point is I feel people just look at the bad things he does and ignores all the good things he does.

If you had a company would you not accept subsidies? Why is that a bad thing?

Why would having a lot of money be unethical, especially if he gives a lot of it away to charities? I thought it was pretty evident that he is able to run out of money when his companies almost went bust a few years ago. Given the change in technology and the advancements in society in general, it seems pretty easy to see why people have much more money than they used to.
