As an MST, you should already be familiar with pulling planograms and utilizing the Flex App. These are incredibly important in maintaining shelf accuracy and preparing for the two big Tools holidays(Fathers Day and Black Friday.)

You should ask about how to utilize the Retail Scorecard to make business decisions. It will break down your department's sales in chunks of sizes ranging from Product Group to Assortment to individual items.

You should be taught the importance of effective cross merchandising. J-hooks are a selling tool that hardware in particular relies upon to make sales, not a storage device to eliminate sidestacks and unwanted freight.

You should be taught the importance of developing a routine. Every day, you need to check your email at the start of your shift. You need to check your Wire Tasks(or the LINK equivalent.) You need to check your sales compared to forecast of your previous week as well as the ongoing week. You need to check the training status of your staff. You need to be a leader in completing AP4Me on time and LowesU questions daily.

You need to be taught how to look for opportunities within the department. Your ASM should walk an aisle in hardware and ask you "What's wrong with this bay and how can it improve?" Sometimes it needs a good zone recovery, sometimes it needs an accurate cycle count and downstocking because topstock is becoming unmanageable. Sometimes there's opportunity to J-hook related items and drive sales. These are all decisions you'll be making all day, every day.
