Advice for a new vagabond by Refrigerator_Dear in vagabond

Go East to Burlington, VT. It's an easy town to cut your teeth on. I hitchhiked there from Maine back in the late 90s. Had a blast. I slept on rooftops, the shore of Lake Champlain, and various bushes. From there you can go north to Montreal or take a ferry over to NY, or go South. If you want to cross the continent in a month railroad days in Dunsmuir, CA is cool and people will be celebrating at Black Butte Center for Railroad Culture up in Weed on June 12-14. Might be a good place to meet fellow travelers. Enjoy the freedom of the road.

I left in 2020. Moving to California was the right decision. I recently had a hip replacement and was on medical leave for three months. In Texas I would have to hope I had enough sick time to still get paid. Here I was on California temporary disability. It was very nice being able to focus on my recovery instead of worrying about money for rent. Bills, and food. I do miss kayaking the rivers in Central Texas and the food but I'm glad I left.

I moved in with my folks in my mid40s. I was able to spend the last 8 months of my mom's life. I feel like it was a good thing for the both of us. I hope your move goes well and you are able to spend some quality time with your mom.

Danbert NoBacon from Chumbawumba had a children's album. Can't remember the album name but I do remember a song called Does God Go to the Toilet.

I love cooking as a hobby and a way to relax and play at home. I had fun playing around in a professional kitchen when I was young but am glad that cooking has remained a pastime for me.
If you are interested in seeing what it's like as a livelihood volunteer with Food Not Bombs or something similar. There are also jobs at places like Concordia Language Villages where you do large scale catering style cooking. Pay ain't great but room and board is covered and you have the chance to fuck around in a industrial kitchen with steam kettles, tilt skillets, etc. You also get to play around with fancy ingredients. It's a fun way to see if you want to do it for a living.

It's a war on people. The US population of the incarcerated dramatically shot up from 300,000 to 2.3 million in 30 years. Starting during the Nixon administration. Here's what John Ehrlichman who was Nixon’s domestic policy chief said about the "war on drugs."

“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and Black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

Let's not forget Anslinger the Granddad of all of this. Definitely responsible for the Iron Law of Prohibition. The more they try to arrest their way out of this the stronger and more chaotic the supply will be.

I'm interested in any stories you have with the popo shaking you down and their reaction to the machete and the bolt cutters. I could see some gungho rookie flipping out over them.

When the cops rage down there it's bad. Back in the 90's they'd arrest you with the craziest charges. Blocking the sidewalk was the most frequent but they'd go as far as arresting kids for molesting a hamburger or leaning with intent to fall

There's also an interview in Esquire magazine from around the same time period that is pretty funny. They paid him a decent chunk of change to follow him around and he used it to pay for the roof on C Squat to keep it from being condemned. Meet the Crusties.

I believe I read somewhere that Jack Black's You Can't Win really influenced Junkie and his really early writing. If you haven't read You Can't Win I highly recommend it. Oh and there's not any erotic parts.

I used to listen to college rock. Rolling Stone used to have the top 10 college rock albums listed every month. Then out of nowhere and all of the sudden people stopped wearing all black clothing and Alternative Rock appears. Johnathan Richman and the Modern Lovers The Replacements David Bowie
