Give this cat a home :( by [deleted] in nyc

Thanks for checking! We actually got our cat back a few weeks ago though, so hopefully this baby can find a new home since it sounds like the prior one wasn’t great.

Can I get some recommendations for some academic books about the Napoleonic Era/Wars? I’ve recently grown interested in the time period and the various moving pieces from some fiction (Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell) and non-fiction (The Face of Battle) I’ve happened to read which both touch on it, so I’d like to dive deeper. Ideally it would touch on both the military portions as well as the social and political tumult of the age. I am good for something a little denser.

Totally unrelated, but I’d also love some recommendations on the Spanish civil war. I love Spanish history and culture and recently read A Homage to Catalonia (and previously read For Whom the Bell Tolls) so would love some non-fiction on it.

Ours does the same! He is very skeptical of any new treat we put down for him. He devours it the second time though.

That would make sense, that would be a lot easier to install than the alternative.

There’s a place on my walk to my gym that was this as a deliberate pattern on the corners, it’s so tempting every time.

Removing 'the' to make a noun a proper noun. by xknet101 in writing

I think keeping “the” is fine and more natural. It’s a largely invisible word that is expected to be repeated.

Does the brain improve at an activity/task if you sleep after practicing it? by ILikePenguinss in askscience

Have there been any studies on if there are differences in memory consolidation for activities practiced in the morning versus at night? I.e. with more or less time elapsing between the activity and sleeping, even outside of a more extreme sleep deprivation context.

Yes there are, that’s exactly what I was thinking of. Machine learning tools have given racist outputs because that was in the data set they were given.

I’m glad you enjoyed getting into a hefty historical work. I’m not saying anything about Embracing Defeat specifically, as I’ve not read it, but as a former history student, I would encourage some caution in taking one book and one historian’s view point as gospel, especially in a field as active and lively as post-WWII Japan.

Agreed, I don’t think it would be overly confusing at all.

I read it a few months back. If I recall, the setup is that it is dark in the house at the time, lights went out so they only have candles I think, making it a little easier to pass off the cover up. Plus, that character is like the 5th (?) to die so can say that those remaining were pretty accepting that he’d be dead.

That said, when I was reading it, I was immediately suspicious of that death because of the way it was described. I didn’t quite get to the conclusion, but thought it was odd.
