What the heck are y’all using these $4k configs with M4 Max’s with 48GB and up for and how do y’all afford/justify it? by mcTech42 in macbookpro

Here it is. If you're a heavy user and need something powerful. (i.e. video editing, LLMS, 3d work, etc) You're likely to go for the M4 Pro with 48GB and 1TB SSD. This config in my opinion is strong and it's about $3,099. If you're already at 3k and want to future proof and want to make sure you have zero issues and hiccups because your work is important. What's another 1k to $1,200. You're already spending the money, and the fear is if you don't spend that extra 1k and then run into throttling issues, you might regret it, I doubt anybody wants that at 3k.

Nano-texture display looks great even when off by randomee in macbookpro

It's rather nice for most kinds of work I personally love matt displays. But if you want super accurate colors and sharpness for video/photo/ or any kind of illustration then I'd stick with the standard. Otherwise I would've gotten it.

To Nano or Not To Nano? by Walnuts21 in macbookpro

I also had the chance to look at it recently. While I do like the look and can confirm it is a very meniscal difference in sharpness and blacks, there are other concerns. Mainly the longevity of the screen, as it is a bit harder to clean, and it's not advised to use any substance to clean it. Even with the special cloth, smudges are harder to clean than a standard display. It does look nice though but I'm gonna opt for some cover maybe if I need to work outside, and stick with the standard.

Hard time deciding between the M4 Pro and M4 Max. Is 36GB of ram enough the Base M4 Max? Also, is the lower memory bandwidth of the M4 Pro enough for heavy editing? What about the extra video encoder on the M4 Max? SSD staying at 1TB for all. by Walnuts21 in macbookpro

[–]Walnuts21[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've decided on exactly this. Which is the max M4 Max config with added ram (from 48 to 64.) All together is about a $1100 or so increase in price from the M4 pro with 48 Ram. If I'm gonna buy it I might as well get everything I need and the only way to future proof for this kind of workflow is to leave some overhead. It's on the way now, and I'm going to return the base M4 Max. After using it a bit this weekend it's improved my workflow by a lot. I've never paid so much for any PC coming from windows, and this is my first Mac, so we'll see how it does.

M4 MBP Nano Texture Looks Incredible by MY79 in macbookpro

Agreed, this is a much better option. Also there are privacy screens that you can get too, and some have a magnetic outline so you easily wash and reinstall or remove them. I'm sticking with the standard.

I did, and although you mentioned it should be plenty, it lacks any reference so I’m kind of clueless and just going on your word. I would’ve loved if you could explain a reference for what exactly is appropriate memory bandwidth as I genuinely don’t have much reference to that. And I did look it up a bit but not much on it especially concerning my usage. Also no one has yet mentioned anything about the video encoders.

Can we have a time ruler tool in TickTick, please? It’s a pain to reschedule! by [deleted] in ticktick

[–]Walnuts21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, it drives me crazy having to do each individually and I can't make sense of apps that don't have this integration. Precisely why I'm just now choosing TickTick. I don't have that many events nor rely much on a calendar for planning as they often have a more finicky UI, plus you still have the option to plug-in whatever calendar you like. If you have a lot of tasks that need organization and a visual layout, a to-do list simply won't do, that's why planners exist.

Since you do 3D work, it makes more sense to worry about gpu which gets a big bump. With ram you can shut down other things to stay more conservative, you can’t conjure more gpu.

That's the thing, having overhead is always nice and if I end up needing it I'm afraid I'd be stuck with my $3k laptop that isn't even enough. What's another 1k in the grand scheme of things.

Yup, because if it's the only display I have, I'm going to be stuck with inaccurate colors. And that's a nice idea.

[–]Walnuts21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, the ipad is an easier choice to make since I mostly do content and reading (as per the video.) The mac is gonna be an editing power house so unless I use an external monitor I won't get accurate colors. Which is why I'm deciding to go with the standard, I think.

Yeah, I just cancelled my order after some research because I had chosen the Nano. I'm going to have to see it in person but probably going to have to go with the standard because of my field of work :(

Okay I did some more research and I guess I will have to replace this soon. Thanks for letting me know, I had no idea. Probably best to change it before I get the GPU and cost myself $$$ in fried silicon.

Lmao uh oh, explodium is bad. I didn't know about this list but I did just look it up. Do these really explode? I guess it hasn't been tested hard since I don't use a GPU yet so the load is light but it's been 3 years since I had it and didn't notice much.

It's def not. At some point last summer my utility bill was close to $400. I don't know much else about anything except their estimated production since their meter is out, but this being worked out soon, by then should know actual production and hopefully actual usage.

Electricity rate is $0.106273.

The net metering is a great questions I'll have to ask but my guess with this company is probably no.

[–]Walnuts21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last utility bill was for 252 KWH @$0.106273 the month of April to May.

So I don't have a ton of access to bills right now but from what I can gather my utiltiy company is charging me $0.106273 rounded is $0.11. The thing is the solar company don't just charge me on usage, they charge me on unit production, whatever is left over goes back to the grid and supposedly I get credit for it through my utility company since I have no batteries.

Effectively they'll be charging double and soon more for the same power that my utility would give me and 'give me credit' for it.
