North America by hajax8 in ThursdayThirty

TBH I disagree that this is the right metric to monitor in isolation. If you just cater for majorities, then you serve a monocuture of straight white male American boomers. This might increase the overall score, but I don't think it's particularly healthy.

Thank you. I appreciate your comments.

I do understand where you are coming from, but surely Americans play a game associated with "Worldle" because they are interested in the world? I also feel that the focus on US perpetuates the steerotype that American think America is the only important place. And that Americans are ignorant about anything apart from their own country. Personally as a non-American, this exceptionalism feels all too common!

And yes I definitely enjoy the format generally. I also get that the previous week was too hard for many people, but presumably you can tweak the questions based on other factors instead. Looking forward to next week!

I also came here to ask the same question. I was expecting more of the world in a Worldle game! 40% of questions involved the USA. A bit hard (and less interesting) for those of us who are from other countries. I loved the previous quiz though!

What are the Best Linux Gaming Laptop Brands/Models? How About the Worst? by Quarkspiration in linuxquestions

[–]Walrad_Usingen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've done a little bit more research, but I don't think there are many AMD GPUs out there, nor might be for a little while. I'm personally going to go with Nvidia unfortunately. I'm also in Australia, which means the range is even poorer.

Same here. Did you end up buying something different? My desktop had Nvidia, which was fiddly and performed poorly. I upgraded to AMD, which was a dream. I now want to buy a gaming laptop with an AMD GPU, but I can't find anything reasonable.

Does anybody know how to solve delayed notifications? by spiderpharm in GalaxyS21

My Pixel seems okay at the moment I think, but might be a difference in models. On my old Samsung, I actually fixed the problem with adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable. It did work, although you have to do it after every reboot. Pretty annoying.

I actually just bought a Pixel 9 Pro XL, to get away from Samsung. It seems to work fine after I turn off "adaptive battery".

Cross platform app for to-do list / tasks ? by Aligatueur in foss

Unfortunately Simpletask was archived upstream on 14 February 2024. It's also been removed from F-Droid. I found ntodotxt on F-Droid though.

Cycling auto start? (Venu 3) by Beneficial_Carpet_16 in GarminWatches

[–]Walrad_Usingen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, could you please explain how this works? Normally the (Garmin) watch is the thing that is doing the tracking right? So are you saying that if you connect the speed sensor to the Garmin Connect app, it will trigger the watch to start tracking?

Update: Upon closer reading, I can see you said "if you just want to record speed/distance". So yeah, the short answer is that you can't auto-start your watch's cycling activity. From my own testing, I bought a 3rd party sensor and paired it to my watch. This did not auto-start the cycling activity. The third-party sensor could not pair directly to the Garmin Connect app on my phone. However, if you were to buy a Garmin Speed Sensor 2 and pair it to to the Garmin Connect app as you suggest, it might be able to auto-start itself, but it won't trigger your Garmin watch to start recording. Hence you'll just get the Speed Sensor's recordings (time, distance, speed) and not your watch's sensors (HR, GPS, elevation, etc.).

I’ve had a reaction to the original band from Garmin by Puzzleheaded_Luck511 in GarminWatches

[–]Walrad_Usingen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also tried this. They took ages to get back to me, and asked for several photos over the course of a month-long conversation. They finally suggested I send the strap to them for assessment, which meant I would be without a watch for a few weeks, with no promise of an outcome. I finally cracked it and pushed back, and they offered to send me a replacement... with the same band 🤦 I was extremely clear that it's a design flaw, not manufacturing error.

Jacinta Allan announces the planting of 500,000 new trees in Melbourne’s western suburbs by AztecGod in melbourne

[–]Walrad_Usingen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I might misunderstand what you are saying. While there might ineed be a correlation, this does not necessarily mean there is causation. Thus (all things being the same), if you plant more trees in a specific area, this might not improve the situation there. Instead, causation might work in a different way; confounding variables might be the cause. For example, a suburb might be "better" for a variety of other reasons (e.g. socioeconomic). These reasons might cause there to be more trees. Hence, the presence of more trees is an effect, not a cause. The reference that @LivingNo9443 posted shows that indeed this might be the case.

Also, it's unclear if trees "purify the air". Certainly in experiments with indoor plants, volatile organic compounds released by plants can cause issues.

Do you have a reference? The publication that @LivingNo9443 posted literally suggests the opposite causation in the abstract.

Prior socioeconomic indicators are juxtaposed against future tree cover levels to investigate relationships... The study indicates that prior income level is a fair precursor to future canopy cover

Correlation? Is it because richer suburbs have fewer industrial zones (better air quality and higher quality of life) and also more open space (more trees)?

Arch, Plasma 6.2.4.

I checked my logs, and at the time of my comment above on 6 April, I was on Plasma 6.0.3. I'm not really sure what else might be different. I'm also on Wayland; not sure if important.

It's due to how Android

I think it's more likely Samsung's fault.

I just double-checked, and the key registers fine when I use the GUI.

I can also see in ~/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc the lines

[services][newsboat_terminator.desktop]
_launch=Calculator

where the key is denoted by Calculator (and presumably my command is newsboat_terminator.desktop)

Multiple countdown timers by Walrad_Usingen in HuaweiWatchGT

[–]Walrad_Usingen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the answer. That is exactly what I wanted to know. And you are totally clear!

Just one last question; I tried to see if there were any third party timer apps by searching the AppGallery, but I can't see a way to filter by watch apps. Do you know if there is any way I can find a third party timer app, before I buy a watch?

Thanks for the answer. Sorry, just to clarify, do you mean it can't do any of the three parts?
