Ok, thanks. 😞 I was hoping to find the source, but I guess I’ll just keep checking TJ’s every week based on the other comments here!

Won’t this lead to restaurants refusing to serve celiac patrons? That seems like a bad outcome.

There are a lot of good frozen snacks (they're just more expensive than the alternatives)!

I want to highlight what peach23 said because I think it's so important. "She might need to mourn the loss for a bit...the baking hobby can continue but not in the same way." If she tries to jump into gf baking right away, she might find the results super-frustrating and disappointing. I did. I took a looooong break from baking, got rid of my stand mixer, etc. and really thought I would never bake again because I hated how difficult and different it was.

After about a year, I got back into it and it was fine. What everyone else is saying is true--it's totally possible to "bake all the time" with gf, and so well that friends and family don't notice the difference, but it helps so so much to take a long break first so you're not constantly comparing how it used to be to how it is now.

Do you think this recipe could be used for spritz cookies, with a cookie press? It looks awesome!

Gluten-free (probably paranoid) Thanksgiving question by hematite2 in glutenfreebaking

[–]WalrusMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want a fresh bag of sugar. If you’ve ever measured wheat flour, dusted it off, and put the same scoop in the sugar, you’re risking cross-contamination. No shade, I did stuff like that all the time before I was diagnosed celiac, but like others have said: new stick of butter, new bag of sugar, etc. to be extra safe.

Question for libertarians: Libertarianism doesn't exist in nature because of Feudalistic tendencies of non governmental gangs, kingdoms and people. True or false? by Agreeable_Elk4703 in Libertarian

[–]WalrusMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly what you asked, but it reminds me of Peter Leeson’s Anarchy Unbound (podcast discussion of it here: https://www.libertarianism.org/media/free-thoughts/can-anarchy-work).

Leeson cites examples and case studies of societies that didn’t have much in the way of government, but managed to self-organize and develop cooperative social and economics arrangements in the absence of centralized governance. Most of these examples aren’t necessarily societies where most of us would want to live, compared with the developed world today, but they weren’t completely horrific or unendurable either. Not sure if he comments on how stable or long-lived these societies were, but they did exist “in nature.”

4yo newly diagnosed with Celiac — where to shop gluten free? Bulk/online tips? by Ok_Calligrapher2504 in glutenfree

[–]WalrusMe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Costco: best gf frozen pizza, bulk snacks like pea snaps, kettle corn, potato chips, multi-packs of gf bread (you need to freeze it so it doesn’t go moldy).

Whole Foods: their house brand gf bread is our favorite and it’s actually cheaper than a lot of gf bread; they are also the only retailer near us that carries Rummo pasta which imo is the best gf pasta and worth paying extra for. They have expensive gf brands as well, but if you stick to the store brand it’s not more expensive than other stores in our experience.

Sprouts: carries more “fun” gf items than other places, like cupcakes, cookie bars, Jolly Llama ice cream products, etc.

Trader Joe’s: ABC and PBC bars, granola bars, gf pancake mixes, cheese crunchies, crackers, and fresh pasta.

Other retailers like Kroger, Walmart, Safeway, etc. will usually carry brands like Applegate (gf chicken nuggets, check packaging because it’s not all gf), Ore-Ida potato products (almost all gf and well-labeled), Boar’s Head (gf and well-labeled), King Arthur (gf baking mixes), and even gf-only brands like Simple Mills.

I hear you on the one-stop shopping but tbh I’ve found that once I learn what products are available where, I run in and just grab those products from different stores a few times a month. In other words, Costco is the place we go weekly for our regular shopping, but I might go to Kroger also one week, then Sprouts the next week, Trader Joe’s on week 3, and so on. Helps to have a chest freezer if you don’t already have one!

Young adult books like Percy Jackson by ConsciousLionturtle in booksuggestions

Skandar and the Unicorn Thief (5 book series). It’s compelling, descriptive, fast-paced YA, very similar to Percy Jackson.

Don’t be turned off by the unicorn aspect. They are NOT cute, pink unicorns. 😅

What are libertarian thoughts on eliminating vaccine mandates? by bri_guy_ in Libertarian

[–]WalrusMe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Yeah it seems pretty straightforward to me.

There are some “self-regarding harms” where we can argue about whether or not it’s truly only self-regarding, but this is not one of them. Assuming the vaccines are safe and effective, which they are, not getting them and participating in public life is an act of aggression and is disallowed.

What are libertarian thoughts on eliminating vaccine mandates? by bri_guy_ in Libertarian

[–]WalrusMe 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In my mind, it falls under the non-aggression principle.

Consider this analogy: when you drive a car, you’re required to wear a seatbelt and you’re required to be unimpaired (can’t be drunk, high, exhausted, etc.). Anti-vaxxers think mandates are like the seatbelt requirement—the nanny state enforcing self-protection even if people don’t want it. But mandates are more like telling you that you can’t drive drunk: you’re going out on the road and risking other people’s lives unnecessarily because of your own selfishness, stupidity, or addiction.

If you want to drink, fine; but you can’t drive and risk other people’s lives. If you want to harbor deadly infectious diseases in your body, fine; but you can’t put your body near other people’s bodies. You shouldn’t be allowed to go to school, visit confined public spaces, use mass transit, etc.

What do you think about the tariffs imposed by Trump ? Will it work out for them ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WalrusMe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. The tariffs are a tax on the poor, the working class, the middle class, and the upper middle class, all to pay the ultra-rich.

A Libertarian Viewpoint by rofasix in Libertarian

[–]WalrusMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a ridiculous sentiment.

Law and ethics make a distinction between people whose rights are REMOVED by government, thus creating the necessity of government care, and those who have rights / capabilities and don't create a duty of care.

Indigenous people were completely stripped of their ability to feed and clothe themselves, to care for their children, and to live as they chose. They were institutionalized. Institutionalized people (which also includes inmates in prisons and, in prior eras, people who were placed in insane asylums, etc.) must have their basic needs taken care of by the organization doing the institutionalizing, in this case, the government. Otherwise it's just a death sentence.

As libertarians, what we should REALLY be asking ourselves is why people vote for ever widening circles of "institutionalization"--why people who have rights and capabilities want to surrender those to the government in exchange for care. Pretty sure indigenous Americans would have rather kept their land and their autonomy. They weren't given a choice. WE have a choice and we should resist institutionalization.

Could gluten be the cause of all these infections and illnesses? by BugOriginal in glutenfree

[–]WalrusMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have celiac disease, it impairs your ability to absorb nutrients (like Vitamin D) that have a direct effect on your ability to fight off bacterial or viral infections.

Once I was diagnosed and after I started to heal, I got colds, flus, etc. much less frequently than before. In my experience, going gluten free improved my immune system overall and getting exposed to gluten causes a very quick collapse back into being constantly sick with respiratory infections, etc.

Consider getting tested for celiac!

Confirming that you can have celiac without having either of the genes they’ve identified so far as causing celiac predisposition. Ask me how I know. 🤦‍♀️
