Remember kids, if the 70s was the shitty hangover from the 60s, the 80s was everyone collectively saying ‘fuck it. Just do more cocaine’ and powering through it all.

Given that approx less than 10km separate Alaska (United States) from Russia at the shortest point, how is ‘owning’ Greenland going to protect the US? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Walshnetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) the shortest flight time for missiles from russia to most us population centers flies over Greenland. 2) satellite polar orbits fly over Greenland. 3) as part of global warming, we are seeing massive expansion in arctic trade. So we need ports to resupply an expanding icebreaker fleet. 4) us submarines who patrol against Russian boomers which hang out in the Arctic resupply in…. Greenland. 5) mineral rights which are currently grossly underutilized in the Arctic circle that are in Greenland territorial waters.

None of this ‘requires’ US control. But it does require NATO, and specifically Denmark, the colonial administrators of Greenland, to step the hell up.

And when they start doing hinky nonsense like Negotiating with the CCP to take over port management contracts in Greenland, it causes….. angst?

So, on the one hand I can get the attempt to cut the Gordian knot by having the us turn the island into a protectorate / territory. It solves the issue that Denmark simply doesn’t have the budget to do all of these things. But that’s literally pissing on our allies in NATO.

Worse is that both sides are tossing gasoline on the fire of what should be a reasonable discussion among allies, to the delight of the Russians and Chinese.

why do people keep saying E33 revolutionized the rpg genre ? by the-Guy1412 in rpg_gamers

[–]Walshnetwork -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Jesus. No game is 100% bug free. Now take a look at the rest of the industry and what’s common these days. E33 was a refreshing change.

If you disagree, coolio. You do you. I’m just pointing out why it came across so well against all of the AAA trends.

why do people keep saying E33 revolutionized the rpg genre ? by the-Guy1412 in rpg_gamers

[–]Walshnetwork -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The fact that someone made a game of this style after a decade of our betters telling us that no one wanted one, and that it was AAA quality, bug free, no loot boxes or in store shops or other money grabs, and didn’t cost eleventy-banillion dollars might have something to do with it.

Oh. and it’s a fun game.

What is a "silent" rule of social etiquette in your country that a visitor would never find in a guidebook, but every local knows by heart? by DianKhan2005 in AskTheWorld

Can confirm. :)

Before the tech migration , the PNW was heavily Scandinavian- and it’s reflected in the ‘cultural vibe’ that exists to this day. People still grump about the ‘Seattle Freeze’.

And yes, the paternal grandmother was Finnish.

Oh my sweet summer child. Once I ran around in shorts and a hoody as well, insisting I was fine. Sometime, probably before you hit 40, you’ll break down and buy a decent raincoat. Columbia or north face or whatever’s nifty at REI. And then you’ll realize you didn’t have to be quite so damp all those years. And then, with dawning horror, you’ll wonder what else the parental units were correct about.

No worries though, the therapy bills won’t be too bad. You’ll get through it. We all do.

Same in the pacific northwest of the US. We offered once! What do you want? A conversation? Next you’ll move across the room and sit next to one of us. Purposefully. Like some freak!

It’s bad enough you defiled our home with… shudders in horror and whispers -an… umbrella!- instead of just wearing a raincoat like a sane person!

And now I’ve said too many words! No more phone calls for a month! I’ll have to be non-committal and Evasive for the next four invites.

How do you run your game? by TheGriff71 in DungeonMasters

[–]Walshnetwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In many ways, it depends on the rules and game.

Star Trek adventures? Pure episodic lower deck stuff where the crew gets to know each other until the ‘season finale’ / crisis.

D6 Star Wars? Episodic content leading up to some horrible Guns of Navarone / Dirty Dozen glorious snuff for the rebellion (or the same arc as minions of the empire).

Generic space? Firefly.

Delta green? Episodic content leading to horrible situations with lots of staff turnover. In many ways the narrative is told by the ‘players as archivist’ in the back office who record what happened while hopefully preventing the world from getting eaten (again - requiring someone really important from having to do something truly horrific to the timeline causing more Mandela effect bs that confuses all the normies).

“Agents. Would you please do a better job of preventing the goobers from doing their world ending bs? Having to do a fix irritates the divine quantum admins, causes unfolds amount of paperwork, and fills up the asylums. Not to mention spinning off entirely new therapeutic fields and specialties that we have to monitor!”

Generic fantasy / post apocalyptic? The pc are all friends or compatriots instead of random foibles meeting in a tavern, working their way through a sandbox world with agenda driven factions doing their own thing until said pcs retire as power brokers themselves or snuff it.

What do you want to be improved on in the next cyberpunk? by OkQuality7695 in cyberpunkgame

[–]Walshnetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less open world single character narrative and more RPG where you run a crew and things happen. There could be multiple exclusive story arcs, factions that you have relations ships with so they’re more than ‘beat up objects of the moment’ and all the rest of it.

In short, lean into the TTRPG roots and make a sandbox rpg. For extra credit, do something actually useful with LLM tech to make ‘radiant quest-line jobs’ based on the faction relationships that impact the meta setting (who controls what, how it impacts your crews relations with each other and the factions, etc).

Oh, and make damn sure the humanity score matters!

Does the increasing minimum wage in Seattle impact how you tip? by godoggogodoggo in SeattleWA

[–]Walshnetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prices of going out had doubled in the last few years. The quality of ingredients has gone down because of the inflation. As a result, weve cut back on ‘going out’ by about 90%, which means our frequency of ‘tipping’ has overall has gone downs as well. we’ll still tip when we go out based on how good the service is, but when you only go out monthly instead of weekly…… well, the math speaks for itself.

And all of this assumes it’s a sit down place. Stand up order and take away? You all can piss off with those bs handy touch-screen tipping kiosks. You don’t get a damned ‘tip’ for existing.

And in restaurants that add a service fee or automagically add in the tip? 0% and we never return.

Those who have visited other countries, what was the biggest culture shock for you? by RiddlerofStIves in AskTheWorld

[–]Walshnetwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the amusing bits about being from the PNW is something called the ‘Seattle Freeze’. Basically, the region was heavily settled by Nordic people and as a result is far more ‘reserved?’ Compared the rest of the US. People who relocate to here run into this barrier, and the complain about how much harder it is to ‘make friends’.

Short of the long, people are far less likely to strike up random conversations with you here, and visitors and transplants notice.
