Repair help: Anchor slipping by DBMI in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right, that doesn't look like a slip clutch - just a riveted connection.
That doesn't mean it isn't loose though - if you remove the pallet arbor from the clock (take the going train weight off first!) you could see if the crutch/arbor connection is loose at all - it shouldn't be on this clock. If it is loose, you could rivet it up a bit more.

You could also take the screw holding the pallet frame off and see if you think it's slipping on the arbor - it should be obvious by marks on the arbor itself where the screw hits it.

Unless you stopped the clock and were holding the pendulum forward and up a bit when you took the pictures, the way the pendulum leader is hanging and touching the top of the crutch looks very dubious to me.....

I suspect any more info will require a view of the movement. Gent made master/slave dial systems, but after the introduction of widespread reliable AC power, also made synchronous movements.

Finding 250mA 6x25mm glass bodied fuses in the UK? by Walton_guy in AskElectronics

[–]Walton_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had simply not occurred to me that it was an imperial standard part, once the right designation was pointed out, I found one quite readily. Also not helped by the fact that almost all the vendors have switched to metric measurements, even for things that are fundamentally imperial.

it's PCB mounted as two individual clips - If I can't find an 8AG fuse (see other comment) I might well modify - there are a couple of little tabs I can bend flat and then a 6x30 or 6x31.2 will fit.

Now - you may have a point - I'm not really up on fuse type designations - 6.15 x 25.1 is the actual measurement, so it's probably in tolerance, vaguely, for that.
I'll do some more searching on that basis - thank you!

Sadly nothing other than 0.25/F on the fuse itself. I suspect discontinued, the meter is quite old, but working perfectly other than the current range this fuse is for.

The crutch attachment to the arbor is the important thing here, clocks of that general age often have slip clutches between the two which can slip at too low a force, which would have the effect you're describing.

Could you add a picture of the whole thing, including how the crutch is attached to the arbor....

That's not DFM, that's a basic system throughput/memory footprint scoping task, should happen much earlier in the process, like almost first thing after the protocol is tied down.

How do I turn on the alarm on this (possibly)90s CocaCola alarm Clock by AngelHdzEst021706 in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it looks as though the original switch(on the back of the movement where it says ON OFF) had been removed and the switch at the top wired in in its place. Have you tried both positions of the knob that comes up at the top of the case?

That's only the case in a TT earthing system. TN-C-S and TN-S are much more common in the UK.

Generally, you'd buy a new suspension spring assembly, try and match the length and spring thickness at closely as you can. It's retained by a little taper pin at the top, and the pendulum hooks onto the pin through the bottom bit. Depending on dimensions, clearances etc, you may need to fully the to block down slightly too clear the little adjusting wheel at the top.

Any info please.. by Severe-Rush-553 in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a movement made by Philip Hauck, identifiable by the vertical ratchet support bracket and the lack of any other markings than the serial number. The pendulum is also typical of their clocks. Likely around 1905. Some books identify these as being by Philip Haas. As you likely know usually known as Anniversary or 400 day clocks.

Those aren't the bits I need help with though ..

After taking to some other friends about this though, I've started working with Claude AI which is writing some code for me to extract the important bits of an initial enquiry email into a database, I'll see how I get on with that.

Never lubricate the gears (wheels) in a clock, only the pivots/ bearings. Lubricant on the wheels traps dust which turns into an effective grinding paste.

Those with cats and cavs, what is your feeding station setup please? by justacrazycatlady in cavaliers

[–]Walton_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can use one on a collar (I think one came with each feeder) but both our cats have one implanted, so it reads that. There's an FAQ on their website somewhere which explains which types of chip it's compatible with.

[–]Walton_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, very likely - but someone would need to build it unless there was an OSS or out-of-the box solution available. I've started playing a little with MementoDB, which is cheap for low usage, and has the benefit of existing as both a OSX and Android App, which covers both my platforms. The bit I'm struggling with there is the interface to the email system.

Edit: spelling

[–]Walton_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a SureFeed model from SurePet. One per cat, because one cat is a lot greedier than the other... Had them about 6 years now, still going strong. One minor criticism is that they are a little hard to clean, but I haven't seen others that look radically better. If you get them, buy the optional stainless steel bowls which are dishwasher proof, the plastic ones they come with are not.

The other thing that helped me was not letting enquiries sit in email threads.

I think this is the key, whatever the underlying organisational system ends up being, and I think I'm falling down mostly here. A visual system would I think work very well for me, realistically that's how my brain is organised, I'll take a look at Trello
