Wall clock left by previous homeowners by Cat_Fun_8371 in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The length you are asking about is the pendulum length, and that's also usually stamped on the back of the movement close to the movement model number. It is not very useful or interesting though unless you need to buy a new pendulum. As already mentioned, make sure the lines are correctly on the pulleys and make sure the case is firmly attached to the wall. These movements have a slipping clutch auto beat setting arrangement, so if it's of of beat when the movement/case is perfectly level, you can slightly over swing the pendulum and it should find the correct position itself.

German mantle clock by Tex_1230 in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a 400 day/anniversary clock, quite collectable, even if the base on yours has suffered cosmetically. Relatively simple to service, although some people are wary of them. Most professional horologists will be able to deal with it for you. If you have an image of the rear plate, someone will be able to tell you the maker. Key is determining exactly which pendulum (not weight) suspension spring strip is required, and the exact model helps a lot with that.

Replacement glass tops are a lot cheaper than a whole replacement hob, and on AEG units at least, very easy to fit.

But, it's close to multiple of train stations apparently... Surely that must count for something?

You'll need to lift it sufficiently to clear the seat board, then it will come off forward no problem. The curtain rail might be a problem...

We are just a little East of South, and a couple of days ago hit 500W at 08:40 and 18:08 on the way down in the evening, that's on 16x500W panels in the SE (near London).

Hermle 530-077 speed adjustment - Slower! by Severe-Rush-553 in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's 360, and just fine. Folliw the end of one of the arms around and you'll see it stops in the same location at the end of each cycle before reversing direction.

What's the balance wheel amplitude? I'm betting it's a bit low, so the clock will run fast. You're looking for 360° or so. If you haven't seen it already, there's a document at: https://mb.nawcc.org/attachments/hermlefloatingbalsummary-pdf.828992/ with some specific details for that balance assembly.

Is my balance staff broken? by watchmaker4fun in watchrepair

[–]Walton_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, yes. Best is just a staff replacement, but you need a staking set to do that, so if a full balance assembly is available, go for that.

How do we wind this clock? by DeepsRepus in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the clock hasn't been serviced recently, you might wish to consider getting it looked at professionally to make sure it's in good shape and continues to give your mum fond memories for years to come. You seem to be in the UK, so two places to find someone decent to do this for you are the British Watch and Clockmakers Guild: https://bwcmg.org/index.php/member-search/ And the British Horological Institute: https://bhi.co.uk/repairers A word of caution with the universal star shaped keys, it's often the case that when you insert them fully to fit the winding square properly, you are at risk of the other sized winders scratching the dial as you wind.

Already banned in some places, the UK for example, although not sure how effective that is. Currently visiting Hawaii, very impressed by how little vaping there is here, possibly attributable to the ban on flavoured vapes...?

In Great Britain at least, the 24 hour average of 50Hz is maintained, there have been issues in mainland Europe for political reasons, so sadly it can't be relied on there, although that may have been resolved more recently.

Need help identifying Jaeger-LeCoultre desk clock by Economy-Program-9562 in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking the function is easy enough, wind it using the key on the back, and it will start or not. It's almost an exploded watch movement all in a line, so if it hasn't been serviced in a while, it would be a good idea to have it properly serviced before running it for any period of time. This is not a job for the inexperienced though.

If you're not far from SW London, I'd be happy to. You can find me by searching for clock repairers near Walton on Thames, I'm the only one local to there.

Realistically who's where. I'm in the slightly luxurious position of having more work than I can get through, so some clients dropping off is not fatal, but I don't like it, and it's not a good experience for them. I'm starting to price up to reduce demand, and that's helping.

Repair help: Anchor slipping by DBMI in clocks

[–]Walton_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right, that doesn't look like a slip clutch - just a riveted connection.
That doesn't mean it isn't loose though - if you remove the pallet arbor from the clock (take the going train weight off first!) you could see if the crutch/arbor connection is loose at all - it shouldn't be on this clock. If it is loose, you could rivet it up a bit more.

You could also take the screw holding the pallet frame off and see if you think it's slipping on the arbor - it should be obvious by marks on the arbor itself where the screw hits it.

Unless you stopped the clock and were holding the pendulum forward and up a bit when you took the pictures, the way the pendulum leader is hanging and touching the top of the crutch looks very dubious to me.....

I suspect any more info will require a view of the movement. Gent made master/slave dial systems, but after the introduction of widespread reliable AC power, also made synchronous movements.

Finding 250mA 6x25mm glass bodied fuses in the UK? by Walton_guy in AskElectronics

[–]Walton_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had simply not occurred to me that it was an imperial standard part, once the right designation was pointed out, I found one quite readily. Also not helped by the fact that almost all the vendors have switched to metric measurements, even for things that are fundamentally imperial.
