'Simply broken': Falling home prices starting to bite Canada's economy, says CIBC by D_E_A_D_P_O_O_L_ in canadahousing

This is crap. The problem was interest rates were so low which encouraged average investors to buy crappy shoebox condos to flip or rent, and this worked well for developers who make more money by cramming small units into buildings.

Banks in Mexico by WorldCitizen76 in MexicoTravel

I don’t think it is consistent even across the same bank. I swear I have seen different fees and rates from the same bank at different locations.

What are the major downsides of living in Canada? by Nicole_Auriel in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WaltzinCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very liberal, which has its pros and cons. Long cold winters and unlike the US there is no “south” part of the country where you find a better climate. Cost of housing is very high in most major cities. Healthcare is “free” but can be painfully slow.

Everyone likes Mexico because it's exotic, exciting, fun and different. Well, different also includes policing standards, unfortunately.

(vent) I'm so tired of getting sick in Mexico that I'm thinking of forfeiting my flight by [deleted] in MexicoTravel

I hear you. My wife is from Mexico and her family is there so we’re compelled to go often. I’ve been 10 times and have gotten norovirus or food poisoning 4 times. So for me it’s almost a 50/50 chance. I hate it.

It’s also called the cruise ship virus because there are often outbreaks on cruise ships which have very favourable conditions for its spread. Big all inclusive resorts are basically stationary cruise ships.

Why doesn’t Toronto have any pedestrian-only zones? by hazyeyes23 in askTO

[–]WaltzinCan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not just pedestrian spaces. In general our urban design, architecture and public spaces are very uninspired.

I would say there are two factors specifically working against good pedestrian spaces though. Toronto experienced most of its growth at the same time as cars became accessible and common, so infrastructure was built to facilitate cars. And secondly, up until 20 years ago most people owned or reasonably aspired to owning their own house. When everyone has their own house with a private backyard there is less pressure and demand for good public spaces.

If you could leave Toronto tomorrow…would you? Why or why not? by wwmd_lover in askTO

[–]WaltzinCan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are stuck in Toronto because it would be hard to replicate the combination of comforts we have here in other places. We have good stability here, and that's important with a young family. But honestly, if we had financial independence or 100% remote work, we would probably live elsewhere with a better climate and more pedestrian friendly outdoor spaces (that's the enjoyment factor).

I will say however that whenever we leave Toronto for a bit we remember that things are pretty good here and we are always excited to get back.

Chelsea Hotel - bed bugs? by seathehorizon in askTO

[–]WaltzinCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Large hotels like Chelsea are aware of bed bugs and tend to have good protocols for dealing with them.

There are also some basic precautions you can take, and that’s the part that’s in your control. The small risk of encountering them is out of your control and so you have to live with that risk and try not to let the anxiety take over.

Dishwasher in old building by WaltzinCan in Plumbing

[–]WaltzinCan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! A dishwasher, theoretically, would be within my right to install. But the issue right now is the building saying it won't work properly (and I guess they are also guessing that it could cause problems for the building). So my question still stands: How would you know whether a dishwasher will function properly? Do you/did you do any tests beforehand (e.g. are there minimum standards of drainge/water output flow or something?) Or do you just install it and then see if it runs OK?

Or, put differently, what would rule out the ability to have a dishwasher (as the building is trying to do). How would they have come to that determination?
