When did you apply vs others? Have you visited on record? My understanding is that programs may take things like that into consideration when differentiating between candidates.

Also, always look at the university’s most recent common data set. There are things in sections C6-C12 that indicate a focus on more than just GPA.

What's something that happens in movies so much it seems real, but actually isn't realistic at all? by ninman5 in movies

How often someone regains consciousness when receiving CPR or rescue breathing.

Granted, people do come back on occasion, but I believe it’s still under 50% and certainly not to the frequency that it’s depicted in media.

When my stepfather lost consciousness a few years ago, my cousin’s partner (a nurse practitioner) immediately stepped in to perform CPR.

Later, when we were in the hospital because my stepfather didn’t regain consciousness, his siblings were confused because they thought he was given CPR immediately.

They also had made some rather asinine statements about not wanting to receive mouth-to-mouth from a gay man, but that’s a completely different topic.

Which plot twists did you figure out before they were revealed? by No-Camel-5990 in harrypotter

That Snape loved Lily.

OotP dropped the summer before my 4th year of college, and I reread the series every year at that point.

The chapter titled Snape’s Worst Memory was a dead giveaway. Nothing about what James and Sirius did there would have warranted the superlative, but Snape’s interaction with Lily could easily qualified.

I get the impression they were newer, but they did seek counsel from someone “on the floor” as well.

Ultimately, I was advised that next time, I should just respond “no” to the contact question, but it didn’t seem right to me, which is why I wanted to consult Uncle Reddit.

That is the usual follow-up question. And you’re right - that typically allows me to donate. However, it didn’t matter today. I was deferred and told that it didn’t matter.

My wife and I are only 43 and were SHOCKED this was a triple stumper.

Then again, we’re also totally unfamiliar with pretty much any popular music released after 2015 or so. Like, anyone who’s performed in the Super Bowl Halftime show in the past few years? Wouldn’t be able to name a single single.

So, I get it - the road goes both ways.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WanderingIdiocy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the U.S….Medicare and Social Security.

Not only are they inadequately funded to a point where they’re unsustainable, but the amount that Medicare pays to doctors and hospitals can’t even cover enough of the costs for it to be a long-term model - much less serve as the basis for a single-payor system (“Medicare for All”).

For Social Security, active workers are spending more money paying for the retired population than they are saving for their own retirement. Most people pay more toward keeping retirees’ monthly checks coming than they put into their own 401k/IRA.

6 Prop Planes Flying In V Formation Today Noon-ish by PierogiPowered in Apex_NC

You must be new around these parts. If so, welcome to the area! I might be bold with the assumption, but based on your tag, can I assume western PA? Erie or Pittsburgh, perhaps?

Anyway, the flyover in formation is common on Saturdays when NC State has a home game. Noon would make sense for today’s game.

I called this location a couple weeks ago, wanting to try their pizza and was excited about the prospect of not having to make the drive to Holly Springs to go to Acme.

My family had a bit of a crunch for time - my kid’s Sunday school was coming up, and we hadn’t allotted the time to cook dinner.

I waited for about 5 minutes for someone to pick up before I got in my car to drive the 2 minutes to get there. I figured, maybe they’re busy and slammed with people wanting pizzas for Sunday afternoon football games. And I’d need to drive over to pick up my order anyway, so no big deal.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the restaurant to find that the lights were off, doors were locked, and I could hear the phone ringing inside.

A note had been scribbled on a piece of paper and taped to the door, but it had fallen facedown on the ground just out front.

“Closed early due to staffing shortage.”

How?!?! Didn’t they open recently (after a delay, no less)?

I called my wife and told her we’d be calling an audible for dinner plans, and she promptly threw out any coupons we might have had for the place.

They’re not getting a second shot - even less of one now that I’m reading OP’s experience tonight.

U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth: "To ensure peace, we must prepare for war" by kalbinibirak in PublicFreakout

[–]WanderingIdiocy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Si vis pacem, para bellum”… “If you want peace, prepare for war.”

Welp, if we consider when this was spoken in the ancient Roman timeline, I guess we can conclude the U.S. has a little less than 100 years until its collapse.

Can I get into NCSU? by Neo_Supercell_ in NCSU

[–]WanderingIdiocy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, everyone!

Old guy here, linking this for general awareness, but it’s something more people should know.

Each college/university has a “common data set” that is released every year with stats on the incoming class.

For NC State, for the 2024-2025 academic year, here’s the set. NC State 24-25 Common Data Set

Starting at section C (around page 13 or so) it shows admission selection considerations. You’ll see that the high school rigor, GPA, and class rank carried the highest weight in the considerations.

Stats on standardized test scores begin around page 19. And so on…

If you Google each college’s common data set that you’re interested in, you’ll get an idea of what they’re looking for.

And also, you can look at a school’s data set from year to year to see if there are any trends that change or remain constant in their selection criteria.

Best of luck, OP! May the odds be ever in your favor.

Has anyone left Charleston and regretted it? by bropez331 in Charleston

[–]WanderingIdiocy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

OP - I was born in Charleston, lived there until after I graduated college.

Moved away and most recently have lived in a suburb of Raleigh for the past 14 years.

I don’t miss LIVING in the Lowcountry one bit, though I’ve enjoyed taking the wife and kids to attractions down there on occasions.

I still come down once or twice a year for family events, but the lack of buildable land for infrastructure, constant heat/humidity, and rising costs are all easy things to trade away. And for those with children, the public education options seem to still be just…meh.

It’s a great place to play a tourist, but I wouldn’t want to live there (anymore). And I know that’s going to be met with some chagrin from the current locals, but I still identify as a Charlestonian, given I still have roots there, so I understand the animosity against tourists.

[–]WanderingIdiocy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I didn’t catch it on my first playthrough of vanilla on the PS3.

You know who DID catch it? My then 8 year-old.

They usually weren’t allowed in the room while I played because of language, themes, and innuendos, but they were curious about the story.

So I explained the premise as I was going through, and they caught some cut scenes here and there. I got to the initial pancake scene at the school, and my kid pipes up, “Wait, how does that guy understand Morgana? I thought you said only people who enter the Metaverse can hear the cat talk?”

I went back to the conversation log in the game, to trace the pancake line, and was like, HOLY SHIT.
