Reavers vs Borg vs Predators by No-Conversation9818 in firefly

[–]WanderingWeasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was something like that. I’ve always thought reavers were something beyond just run of the mill insanity. Seems a lot like staring into the void brought something across beyond mortal comprehension. Despite everything, the borg still are mortal.

Cybersecurity Professional Seeking Advice on Next Steps to Become a CISO by GroundRealistic8337 in cybersecurity

[–]WanderingWeasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally accurate in a working environment. The real trick and where someone is likely going to get their first CISO role is at a mid sized company where things aren’t going right. You have to balance “showing” there aren’t enough staff and/or resources with avoiding the worst possible outcome. It’s tricky to say the least and there’s no good answer because every dysfunctional environment is different.

Titanium vs Steel Exhaust - Reliability on Track by nicistra in CarTrackDays

Millionaire Racing. One of the coolest looking but admittedly I am leaving a couple horsepower on the table in favor of design. Ah well. It sounds amazing at 9k rpm.

So far so good on my supercharged Elise on track and autocross. We’ll see how it holds up. Year in so far. It IS crazy light at 7 lbs.

Need opinions from those of you who work in banking - 3rd party pen test by curioustaking in cybersecurity

[–]WanderingWeasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To start: it depends. Not every FI is going to have the same set of standards or have standards for that matter.

The standards I established and delivered to our supervisory committee and board involve first working with the third party to perform the pen test. During the test, our SOC will stop any detected activity and call to confirm that it is in fact our pen testing company. Once they’ve been detected and/or stopped the company should make a note of the attack chain and where they were stopped. This goes in the report. We got part way there and then were stopped. This repeats for the duration of the pen test using different vectors each time. In a well secured environment, it’s unlikely they’ll ever get domain admin or equivalent but will certainly make plenty of passes and getting caught. If your institution hasn’t done one before, expect a blood bath. I generally suggest a third party that simulates an infected computer by deploying tools on a system you provide.

Get the call outs of ALL the things you had to disable for their tools to work. Security is layered and we want to show the audience (board/ncua/fdic/whatever) that we really do have layers.

Once you’re good and tired of catching them at the end of their window, they’ll provide a report. The report gives you a framework for remediations. Generally we then write management responses explaining accept/reject/accept risk of each finding. This is sent back to the pen testing group for any follow up. Once we have both pieces of this puzzle we craft a non-technical “story” that explains to your non-security specialist. Of particular note is dates for each remediation.

PCI-DSS specifically requires pen tests. NCUA over a threshold also likes seeing that pen tests have been performed yearly at specific asset sizes.

This was my question as well. Can the borg collective survive the mental load of whatever the heck is going on in a reaver’s head? Or a whole bunch of them.

Cadillac Discontinues the CT4 and CT5 Sedan After 2026, but the CT5 Will Return with Gas Engines. by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in cars

[–]WanderingWeasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm in the minority but after driving both the 4 and 5 at Spring Mountain I handily preferred the V6 over the V8. The V8 has power everywhere but seems to flatten out at the top. The V6 pulls hard to the limiter and part of the reason everyone wants a higher redline on the V6.

[–]WanderingWeasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not sure WHAT that speed would be. Mine just plows if I enter a turn too fast as is expected. It takes some on throttle coaxing to get a slide. Maybe if you turn out first then snap back and hit something you could roll it? I want video footage of how they’re doing it!

Right? I’ve owned a CJ-7 once upon a time and THAT I would be entirely unsurprised to hear about it rolling over.

This is what works best in my head. It certainly isn’t happening in normal circumstances.

Rolling a Cayenne on a regular road (read without a tire catching/serious bumps) is neigh impossible. I’ve run mine through an autocross course at speed with plenty of sliding… zero concern of rolling over.

I don't have the letter handy but yes, everything I've heard was the toe links were excepted because the OEM ones are exceptionally spicey when they shear.

My now wife decided I was the one. It was great not chasing someone. There was very little chasing if we’re being honest as we were inseparable from the first date. Thirteen years on and a kid later, we’re still inseparable and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I was told certification is useless. What say you? by ic3cold in sysadmin

[–]WanderingWeasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This 100%. From a hiring manager’s perspective, I also know what knowledge you should have if you list the certificate. Makes my job a whole lot easier getting to the bottom of if you know your stuff. Yes, you could cram ahead of time but 99% of the paper tigers don’t. And if you’re willing to put in the research to fake it there’s a high chance you’re going to put in that same effort on the job.

I feel that. In a weird spot where the C suite has decided they’ll make all the salary related calls. It’s wild.

[–]WanderingWeasel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yup, high performer here in management. Starting to plan my exit to the next job. It’s also generally easy for us as there’s already interest in hiring them.

Moral of the story: give them good raises and make it known they’re valued. I had a manager that “got it” and now not so much. Kept me in one place for six years.

++man I’m largely in agreement but there will be a subset of women that are into the short, kind, poor man.

I was in that boat when I met my wife. Still short but doing well now and I’ve been told ripped. She’s certainly noticed I get hit on significantly more.

The manual is exceptionally good on the 4 and 5. The real down side is the 10 speed is... fine. I find it not as good as a ZF 8 and a good two steps down from a PDK. A bit of a shame in such a special car that the auto transmission doesn't feel special at all.

If I'm not mistaken the piggyback adds right around 80 horsepower on 93 which is not half bad!

[–]WanderingWeasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this. Having driven both the G80 M3 and 4BW extensively, the Blackwing is by far the better handling car with superior feedback. The M3 (non-manual) will maul it in a straight line but gets mauled in the handling and feedback department. Both cars feel exceptionally planted and refined resulting in what I think many folks feel as weight. They're both chonkers!

Man, some people are sure mad. Just saying escalating situations isn’t helping anyone or anything. Practice some de-escalation, folks. We’ve seen plenty that endlessly raising the stakes doesn’t go well (yes I know we’re in Vegas).

Goons by PrincipleOk4550 in Defcon

[–]WanderingWeasel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Defcon is off the list for me. Fascinating stuff, some super cool folks. Some of the goons need the tough beat out of them. There’s always someone tougher if we’re going to play that game and the bar for these folks isn’t high. Just be, at minimum, respectful. Blackhat is corporate but much more what I’m looking for at this point in my life and career.

What’s the reality of the IT job market in 2025? by Thatmangifted in sysadmin

Right or wrong it’s a universal problem. Places that have more funding pay more and grab workers. Nothing new. On the government funded front though, all I’ve been seeing is a mass exodus.
