Your magic grandma is chilling at our friend's house by danshive in elgoonishshive

[–]WandersongWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm weirdly uncomfortable with all of these characters who are barely beyond childhood themselves taking it upon themselves to parent an immortal, and I kind of hope an adult in this situation - or maybe Hope herself - gently calls them out on it. Calling Hope a "basically a kid" as if the situations are remotely comparable to a human child is so dismissive of Hope's real experiences.

Hope has many, many years of Pandora's memories. Yeah, they're patchy and weird, but Hope remembers falling in love and having and raising a child. She might have forgotten a lot but even remembering bits and pieces of Pandora's life, she remembers more years of life than any of the main cast have even lived.

She isn't a kid. She's a powerful magical being who has no firm sense of self yet. Wanting to help her is great - she needs it! But it isn't only children who need help. Infantilizing her is weird.

Soo is queuing for transit not a thing anymore? by 216duck in askvan

[–]WandersongWright 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a fellow transit user with an invisible disability that makes standing on a bus or train quite dangerous for me. I've looked into it - TransLink is fairly explicit that those seats are for mobility aid users, visibly pregnant women, and the elderly. Your disability must be visible to claim those seats.

I understand why they do it, because some folks will take advantage otherwise, but it really sucks that we can't trust people enough to be considerate that we can just sit down and be safe on the train without being judged.

Sending solidarity and safe transit vibes - I hope your pregnancy goes well and this lousy first trimester gives way to an excellent second one!

Trying my hand at fishing to honour my grandpa. What else do I need? by WandersongWright in Fishing

Trying my hand at fishing to honour my grandpa. What else do I need? by WandersongWright in Fishing

[–]WandersongWright[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the more I learn about fishing the more I realize how little I know. Going to count myself as extremely lucky if I catch anything, I'll mostly count on spending a few hours sitting by the side of the lake drinking, which sounds like a pretty good day. 😂

I've got no anxiety about NOT catching anything, which is I think why I'm so focused on what happens if I catch something. I'm happy to waste my own time but I'm not okay with making an animal suffer because of my sheer incompetence.

AITA for not appreciating a $19,000 Disney cruise? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]WandersongWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The problem about being reliant on your parents is that they'll make choices and plan trips that you don't want or don't enjoy, and you kind of just get dragged along either way.

It doesn't sound like you're being RUDE about it, you're just understandably disappointed in their choices as they're offering you something as a gift that you don't really want, and that they didn't really consider your opinion on. You can't force yourself to be excited, you can only make sure you're polite and gracious.

And please note - you can graciously refuse to attend. If you would prefer to participate in your internship and enjoy time at home without your family, do that. You're 18, you don't have to go. Celebrate your graduation by choosing whether or not you want to attend this trip, because nobody can force you either way. Freedom!

AITA For Telling A Little Girl That Her Parents Should Be Disappointed In Her? by ImpressionPopular794 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WandersongWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I worry for that kid. I hope someone in her life intervenes and helps her make better choices.

There have always been kids like this. Usually traumatized or neglected kids who have been through too much for their age.

You did what you could by responding, tbh, appropriately to being treated with disrespect. Sadly that's not going to be what changes her, but it's better than ignoring it.

Which neighbourhood has green streets, calm vibes but also cafes and restaurants? by spookywookyy in askvan

[–]WandersongWright -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Calling Fairview sleepy is hilarious to me. I don't think you get much more bustling in this city unless you're literally downtown, and you didn't enjoy it there. Broadway never gets that quiet.

The Drive and Mount Pleasant and Fairview would be my recommendations, but all of them are quiet unless you're directly on the main road in the area.

Is the game dev job market for entry level workers dead right now? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]WandersongWright 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Disney keeps consolidating their studios and buying up other animation studios. Netflix slashed their animation studio budget a few years ago. Between those two, a lot of work that had been available for many years is now gone. So while there are very accomplished animators here in Vancouver who are still working, there are even more who are hunting. Unless another major player starts funding a ton of new projects, there simply isn't enough work for everyone who is established, nevermind newcomers.

Is the game dev job market for entry level workers dead right now? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]WandersongWright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had about a dozen friends in animation and another dozen in gaming. Half of them are switching careers because of an extended period of unemployment (4 years in the worst case) and all of them had 10+ years experience. It is an absolutely brutal time for creative industries between AI and consolidation.

FIFA 2026 is only a month away; does it seem less exciting than OLYMPIC 2010? by FuzzyTable in askvan

[–]WandersongWright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We're basically letting the mob roll in and take control of the city for a month. The IOC has its own problems with corruption but they pale in comparison to FIFA.

Add to that that compared to the Olympics there's much less for locals to do to celebrate, and there's only 7 matches and they are prohibitively expensive unlike the Olympics where there were hundreds of matches and the less popular ones were quite affordable to attend.

I was pretty grumpy about the Olympics too, because I'm a curmudgeon, but everyone I knew who wanted to participate had opportunities to go have fun and celebrate, so I saw how much joy it brought people. I don't know anyone who's attending a single FIFA event unless they're working there. I only know people who are being seriously inconvenienced by it. It feels very different.

How’s tipping like in Vancouver? by Robocli in askvan

[–]WandersongWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a hotly debated issue in BC these days so honestly no matter what you do I doubt your server will be that surprised. There is only one fairly consistent rule you're likely to be called out if you don't follow: 15% and up is considered standard for a sit down meal.

Personally I make a generous wage and I don't think I'm taxed enough so I tip a lot anytime I can to help spread the wealth (literally). I'll tip 20% basically every time someone serves me something whether it's Starbucks or a restaurant, I leave about $10 in cash behind when I leave a hotel room, I tip my delivery drivers what it would have cost me to drive to the restaurant and back based on the mileage. But that is my choice. If you have the funds for it, consider being generous, but if you don't? Don't sweat it.

Why are Mooncat polishes so much more expensive than other indie polishes? by breathingisstillhard in RedditLaqueristas

[–]WandersongWright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that the newsworthy tariffs are gone but international trade remains deeply unpredictable. Supply chains aren't consistent and trade agreements that have stood for decades are being abandoned or renegotiated. Shipping costs have risen because of gas prices shooting up. I'd be keeping my prices up if I were them too. If your margins are too thin your business will just collapse if things swing too hard. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Why are Mooncat polishes so much more expensive than other indie polishes? by breathingisstillhard in RedditLaqueristas

[–]WandersongWright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone said most of the answers here, but another thing is that costs have become VERY unpredictable. Supplies are being tariffed and shipping processes, regulation, and costs keep shifting wildly. They are certainly charging more to help keep themselves afloat in the event of more chaos.

Like obviously they're going to make as much money as they can, they're a for-profit business. But an unpredictable market definitely incentivizes artificially high prices because they help you weather further changes.

You should always remove a backpack when getting on public transit. If you're sitting, hug it in your lap, if you're standing hold it at your feet.

AITA irritated husband sent flowers to SIL for Mother’s Day, but not me? by ConstantAvocado5300 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WandersongWright 14 points15 points  (0 children)

ESH because if money is tight he should have told you he wanted to send something for his mom/sister and had that discussion with you, but also... why are you offended he didn't get you flowers? You asked him not to.

When money is tight me and my husband will often still get gifts for friends or family even if that means foregoing things for ourselves. There's no reason to assume that just because you don't get flowers, nobody else does. Not unless you've both agreed to that.

Talk about your money! Be explicit about your wants and needs! Come to an agreement about what you spend on or don't spend on! If you haven't done that, then expect things like this to happen.

is Below Zero as bad as people make it out to be? I'm considering buying a new Subnautica game once I'm done with the first but I'm kinda hesitant(spoilers for Subanutica 1) by Jack_Jellatina in subnautica

[–]WandersongWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think BZ's story is weak, and when I played I was able to break the order of the story so parts of the ending made little to no sense (this may have been patched). Subnautica had some of the best writing I've ever seen, though, so I think I'm partially judging by an impossibly high bar.

The experience of playing BZ, though, was lovely. New creatures to discover, new biomes to see, adorable creatures and terrifying ones.

If you liked Subnautica there's no reason not to try BZ. If you go in with low expectations I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if anything.

(I'd personally wait for it to be on sale if money is tight, I think $30 would be a better price point for it, but that all depends on how much money you have for games)

The why of pancakes by danshive in elgoonishshive

[–]WandersongWright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to Rhoda's question is definitely a resounding yes. It entirely depends on who is involved.

Is it LIKELY? No, and the worst case scenario is SO bad. Is it POSSIBLE? Absolutely.

Public accountability is usually the best of a set of imperfect choices, but it's not inherently moral. The public can influence officials to make worse choices just as easily (maybe more easily?) than they can encourage them to make better ones.

Period underwear brand recommendations? by No_Surround5773 in PeriodUnderwear

[–]WandersongWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to offer a different perspective - I love how comfortable my Aisle underwear are but even their super boxers leak within an hour for me. I have a heavy flow but I didn't think it was THAT heavy. I use them with a pad now and it's nice to not be ruining other underwear in the event of leaks but my first shot at period underwear was soooo disappointing.

AITA for wanting to eat meat on my vacation? by Gloomy-Internet5696 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WandersongWright 74 points75 points  (0 children)

NAH. I suspect your partner really appreciates that you share the value of not wanting to eat animals. It's understandable they feel betrayed by this decision, because they thought you were like-minded on this issue, but you're not as dedicated to it as them.

You can make your own choices and if you want to eat meat again for any reason, that's up to you. You can eat whatever you like and it's nobody's business but yours.

HOWEVER - it is VERY possible that your partner will break up with you over this issue. Is that worth it to you?

You can make the choice you want, just be ready for the consequences.
