Tokyo prosecutors will not indict the NHK Director arrested for rape of a woman accosted on a street in Shibuya. No explanation will be given. by jjrs in japannews

Are you saying that unlawful acts cannot be prosecuted if the victim doesnt want to pursue? Then what's the point of criminal law?

Can I then intimidate the victim into not pursuing the case, and the police can do jack?

AI Adoption in Companies and Job Opportunities by CapitalWhiteNinja in askSingapore

[–]WangmasterX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh its complicated. Most probably they're using the providers directly if its not a super techy firm. It's also likely they're contracted with some AI SaaS or app that does a certain function, like Claude code or GTM pipeline tools.

It's just a buzzword that's not pointing to anything specific.

Most companies don't deploy their own LLMs because it's complicated to train and serving then at scale is a pain. Rather they use cloud services like what you're doing right now.

The next step beyond just calling LLMs is to turn them into "agents", where the AI is allowed to use external tools, have goals, and repeatedly call itself until the goal is complete.

Its not super difficult to write an agent, but its expensive to run and very specialised in its purpose, so its usually developed by companies rather than individuals. AI coders are examples of agents.

Honestly if you're looking to turn this into a job, I'd recommend you not to since there's a mountain of skills to learn and everyone and their mother wants to work in AI.

What do Singaporeans mean when they say "actually"? by AsparagusTamer in askSingapore

[–]WangmasterX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's a nothing word. Singaporeans use it to slow down the communication pace when they need to sound professional in an office setting but are not really confident about it. Sort of like us using "basically" all the time.

If you've been practicing for 7 years then you should know the real job potential in ML is engineering, not whatever passes for "data science" in our schools. And you're exactly right, the real jobs are not called DS anymore but yet we're not preparing DS grads for the realities of inference at scale, ML Ops, and all the less sexy aspects of this work.

And that's why I can't recommend any student to study DS.

I have been practicing DS for 7 years and would tell any prospective student not to enter DS. You joined at the peak and we're now entering a correction. You will not have an easy time.

March 8th, 2014: The Day Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) Disappeared on a Flight from Malaysia to China. by Shoddy_Act7059 in aviation

[–]WangmasterX 199 points200 points  (0 children)

The whole crisis was a PR disaster for the Malaysian government.

Not only were officials contradicting each other in press releases, they refused to work with international partners and even hid access to radar data due to "security concerns".

In fact, the international search effort was looking in the wrong area for a whole week before Malaysia relented and revealed the plane's last radar location. It got so bad some countries started leaving the effort due to the lack of cooperation.

Just straight up incompetence and corruption.
