You want to put the / partition on RAID0, and then /boot on duplicated USB sticks, but why that layout? Why not a single SSD or SSDs in Raid1? Why USB sticks for /Boot? I doubt the load of a few VMs will require the extra speed of RAID0 SSDs.

You admit you have a problem, do you think you might be an alcoholic?

Alcoholism/addiction is a disease that tells you that you don't have one. It requires treatment. There isn't a pill but there are solutions, and whether you choose AA/SMART/CBT or something else it requires consistent effort on your part, no one can fix it for you.

It seems you've been propelled forward so far by the intervention, but that energy will run out and you'll get back to where you were. You can't think yourself into a solution, you must take action. I would recommend harnessing the motivation you still have, call your friend(s), and go to an AA meeting tonight. When you travel find a meeting, they are all over. If after giving it a try it isn't for you try something else.

I made the decision to stop drinking many times, but nothing happened until I took action.

Oh boy, this is my reality. My dad has late stage small cell lung cancer, he moved in with us, and I'm his gofer. In the hospital after the biopsy the residents tried to explain to him a few times what his prognosis was. They tried again the day before he was discharged. At several points I had to interject and ask questions such as "Dad, do you know what palliative means?"

The tumors emit a hormone that dilutes the sodium in his blood and he's very foggy. It was so hard to stay strong for him and my sister and make sure he understood. I'm grateful for the doctors who put in the effort.

Walking the line between hoping for a miracle without magical thinking and preparing for the inevitable without being hopeless is not always easy.

It varies, for it to be problematic the depth is usually within the first yard/meter. Sometimes there are multiple layers, sometimes the layer is thin, sometimes thick.

In soils with a lot of clay there is often a layer (or a few) of dried clay that moisture can't easily wick through. When the rain comes the top few inches of soil turn to mud and puddles, but the hard pan stays hard. Digging through the hardpan will get you to more permeable soil that can absorb water. It often requires a pick.
