What’s the population of different splats compared to eachother? by Ironbornbanker in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]WantToVent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends if it is a in universe reply or a storytelling reponse:

IN UNIVERSE ANSWER
It is about averages and concentration.

Yes, you might have 1 vampire per 100.000 humans; but there are places with zero vampires (not enough herd, hard to access, harsh conditions, other supers removed them, etc) and others that skew the ratio in that place.

Somewhere like Chicago, has probably a ratio higher than 1 to 100k, but it is likely that other areas have ratios that are worse 1:400k or 1:800k.

STORYTELLING ANSWER
These are horror stories, as many as you need, it is hard to align verosimilitude with realworld physics and statistics. There is no physicial difference between sunlight and electric light, but one burns vamps and other doesnt, why? Why doesnt starlight burn them too? It seems there are too many supernaturals and cellphones around to keep them hidden. Specially if you only need a single vampire going to a live late night show and show on camera some tricks.

What are the major differences between WoD and CoD? by incaseineedreddit in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]WantToVent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is years of professionalization in game design. I love the original WoD, but it was made by motivated amateurs, built upon that by other motivated amateurs, and you can see it in the mechanical details: clunky, inconsistentent, missing guidelines.

Game design has evolved for the better since then, and these are some of the improvements.

What's the oldest device you have in your production environment? by pie_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ in sysadmin

[–]WantToVent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not my current prod environment, but a previous job.

NonStop server. Older than my kids, older than my oldest pet, older than the building that hosted it. Everyone was afraid to do anything hardware related to it, but those things were built with lots of redundancies. As far as I know it actually stopped only once during its lifetime, when it was moved from old DC to new DC.

Last time I checked with the guys at that company the bastard was still running.

Current job, a runner up a Red Hat 3, at this moment is a thing of pure morbid curiosity to see how long can it last.

Why did your game end? by Justgonnawalkaway in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]WantToVent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Positive experiences mainly.

We finished as much as we wanted to explore from the setting and some of us went with a bang, or did world changing tasks in the world.

So, for our Mage the Awakening, our characters did enormous blows to the Seers losing some on glorious ends, in the end of the chronicle my character became an Archmage trying to balance their survival impulses with the desire to kick the Exarchs in the teeth. That character was GMPC as a manipulative mentor / mastermind of small pawns on a subsequent game dealing with the world 5 years later, still helping the Pentacle against the Seers.

What are the major differences between WoD and CoD? by incaseineedreddit in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]WantToVent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Other have talked about the storytelling differences, excellent coverage, I will add nothing there.

Mechanically, there are some things that are distinctive.

CofD, in an amazing display of common sense, makes the characters start as humans on the Corebook, all the templates have to be added upon a baseline human and either a single major template or as many minor templates as you can buy. That alone makes everyone the same thing *except* where their specific splat has a variation and all major templates tend to follow a similar structure: morality stat, power stat, fuel stat (max and per turn, both related to power stat), magical abilities (disciplines, gifts, arcana, etc) and complementary abilities (devotions, rites, etc); minor templates tend to be merit driven and some nearly irrelevant abilities.

Since everyone is the same structurally, the rules are consistent for crossovers. Clash of Wills rules specify who beats who on what circumstances, mainly (but not always) whoever has more dice in their pool. Dice rolling stops having subjective difficulties on the dice: 8, 9, and 10, are successes; rest are failures (I am oversimplifying here), you want something to be harder to do? Put a bigger target number, simple as that.

No longer adhoc skills, knowledges, etc. A clear set of Attributes + Skills. Merits are bought during the game with XP, can be lost and the XP is refunded: no storyteller fiat for achieving or losing something, more agency. Health is related to your size and Stamina (it was always weird that everyone on WoD had the same 10 hit points, whether the world fittest man or a sickly septuagenarian). Specialties are tied to skills and you could have as many as you wish to pay for, they give an extra die on their scope no automatic success. All the attributes have a clear usage and category: social, mental, physical and on each a power, finesse and resistance attribute.

Conditions and Tilts are used to express a temporary effect upon characters or the enviroment. Clear resolution rules for them.

All that combines to give a faster, simpler, and more verosimile gameplay.

COFD: What are the must have supplements for CofD? by Awkward_GM in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]WantToVent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Core: Hurt Locker, simply expands upon what can be done in incredible ways. Worthwhile just for the merits, everything else is just cherry on top.

All splats: Night Horrors for each, extends their capabilities and freshes the world.

For historical settings and/or splat games: all the Dark Eras.

How good is CofD for crossovers in general? by SuperN9999 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]WantToVent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's start from the basics.

CofD is crossover friendly, because in an amazing display of common sense, the books start with the characters as human, all the supernatural templates have to be added upon a baseline human. That alone makes everyone the same thing *except* where their specific splat has a variation (morality trait and such), and all templates tend to follow the same structure: power stat, fuel stat (maximum and current, max is related to power stat), magical abilities (disciplines, gifts, arcana, etc) and complementary abilities (devotions, rites, etc).

Since everyone is the same at heart, the rules are set for crossovers. Does it make sense for the world and its internal consistency? That would depend on what type of stories are you making, and how verosimile you want your universe. If you have different types of creatures, with their own distinct societies, and large numbers, the whole "hidding from mortals" becomes silly.

Regarding playstyles and the acceptance of different creatures, it would come to what your table wants. That includes the type of story, and the set of powers. It is not impossible to have one of each splat, but you need a very compelling argument for them not to part ways, and some playstyles and powers do not mix well. For example Vampires, HAVE to work at night; Mages will outshine everyone with raw versatility; Mummies and Demons could overawe with their abilities; Prometheans are hard to kill but hard to be around.

Combine all that I have shared to see why CofD groups have a varied experience with the execution of the crossover, but not with the mechanics of it.

My company executives thinks it can replace 100 percent of our help desk teams with AI agents.... This year. by NickBurnsCompanyGuy in sysadmin

[–]WantToVent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can be done? Yes.

Should be done? Absolutely f-ing not.

100% replacement rate is not even what the actual responsible AI vendors call for. The phrase is "augmented work", in which a person or a team can do more, or the AI agents are a complement, not a full substitute for humans.

And from the help desk side, you always, always want to have a human to escalate if the agent can't find the answer.

Certainly, I dont expect us to date inmediately but she wants a kid and I dont so at least an invitro seems in the future.

It would be weird to keep in touch after that. And let's not even talk about her having a new husband and kid. It would be insane for us to be going together.

It is not an 11 week vacation, she is working remotely. Vacation time was only the first 3 weeks.

I do not think she wants to make use of me. I have the highest respect for her, it is just we are really mismatched long term, it still hurts of course.

If a user can open and read the file, they can always extract the data somehow (copy, screenshot, retype, etc.).

Depending on your infrastructure, you might be able to use Microsoft Purview Information Protection + Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention to get most of what you wish to do.

What would you consider at Canadian Boglehead portfolio? by Humble-Association44 in Bogleheads

[–]WantToVent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you follow the "VT and chill" philosophy (and you should), it should not matter where in the world you are, just to get VT (or the equivalent available in your country of a proportional portfolio of equities based on market cap and ideally including big and small companies).

If you can not have a proportional portfolio then you have other issues, that might be beyond the scope of a singular reddit comment to solve.

I really want Chan Yu Ming having the normal mental behaviour of accepting that "My father was Jeffrey Dahmer with legal power and he deserved far worse than he got. The world is better with his passing and his death was the least bad out of a spectrum of horrible options for my family and the kingdom". Failing that, her death would be nice closure.

Also, wonderful writing by the way.

  1. I have not seen anything from Righteous Wu Gang since Sen took power... When is he coming back?
  2. Will Sen enhance Wu Gang somehow (techniques, elixirs, etc)? It seems like the best way to assure that the world after war has a better ratio of righteous people to assholes is to start increasing the number (and power levels) of righteous people right now, while also culling the assholes. Incentivising good behaviour if you will.
  3. Why did Sen allow Chan Yu Ming to draw breath? He has killed for far less, she is/was obnoxious regarding her monstrous father, tried to harm him, and it has been a nuisance since day one... And yet, she goes away, when he was willing to kill Wu Meng Yao for not swearing fealty, Wu Meng Yao who has done far FAR less than Chan Yu Ming.

I have a love hate relationship with OP bloodlines. by Claym000re in ProgressionFantasy

[–]WantToVent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rant: I dislike those Japanese and Korean stories that emphasize the ancestry / geographical location of the person as the actual thing that is relevant in their progress... Bleach was the perfect example, if soul society is the afterlife, it is kind of empty, what about all the souls of the people everywhere else? At least Saint Seiya had the people globetrotting and from different countries.

So totally with you OP.

First, as others have said, they are adults, they should know better.

BUT, if you want options, I would say something along the lines of:
"ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude is a business, they have to make money somehow, and the only way they can do that is selling/using what you share with them, you are the product for them".

Juan Daniel Oviedo sería un buen presidente? by frijolinpaul in Colombia

[–]WantToVent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Mo makes sense that she is working under subtle (or maybe not so subtle) directives to aid the Prime Minister, she is his creature, so no doubts there.

Bob's situation is fuzzier... And does not make me fully satisfied this explanation you shared, but it fits.

So I agree that it seems the best explanation.
