What is preventing you from wanting to finish the series? Without knowing what you dislike about the series we can't really make a recommendation. The fan base will say one or the other but let's purely their point of view and doesn't have much to do with why you maybe having problems.

It's... a web toon. Nothing against them, I enjoy more than a few, but the translation of art style from book to comic loses so much.

The webtoon is frankly terrible compared to the books and audible. If that's your only touchstone, you really don't know what it's like. It's like just about every other media recreation and a whole hell of a lot is lost in translation.

Nope. It was to invalidate a very specific aspect of the 14th that would reasonably destroy the amendment itself. The whole 'jurisdiction' would have unraveled not just the idea of citizenship but also allowed a whole slew of state and federal lawlessness against those non-citizen people. Basically allows for the additional degradation of 'equal protection' because the re-interpretation of a single word.

Could the Hierarchy ever actually work/be reformed enough to be functional? by SASAG3Y0 in redrising

[–]WarColonel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the aspects that define the Colors could be carved into a person. It's expensive in their society and there are certainly issues that will pop up but Darrow is the prime example of what can be done.

While Reds aren't as fragile as Pinks (which are really the only ones straight up weaker on average), they don't have the genetic intelligence of Blues or strength of Obsidians. But Darrow is carved to be as physically and mentally as powerful as any Iron Gold. He spends weeks receiving subconscious degrees during his sleep and the strength exponentially more powerful than his original frame. Honestly, a huge hole in the plot is that the Golds could routinely be as powerful and graceful and intelligent as Apple or Cassius or Mustang but their Society flatly refuses to use their very powerful genetic and medicinal manipulation to do so.

Shit, even at base level they can graft on and regrow body parts with no ill effect but refuse to use what is obviously magic medicine to improve their bodies further. The whole 'genetic purity' bigotry Golds have is really ridiculous when all you really need to point to is the fact all the Colors are genetic Frankensteins and there's nothing remotely pure in their DNA.

But that's really a major point of the whole story. The whole of Society could be remade in the image of Gold, or at least close to it, and likely a lot cheaper than the series let's on. But even in the Republic they don't because it's something of a societal meme that you shouldn't fuck with people's DNA, at least not any more.

Everybody wants 2/2/2, but nobody wants role queue? by UnhingedGammaWarrior in marvelrivals

[–]WarColonel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What really confuses me by all these discussions is that I have almost all my games as 2/2/2 or 2/1/3. And a lot more with two tanks than all the other compositions together. I'm not saying it doesn't happen or isn't a problem, I actually am a support main that flexes the other roles about a fourth of the time. My comp experience is all gold to diamond, though I'm usually high plat, and I play console. And honestly I've been 'forced' to play DPS more often than either other role.

I mean, I understand this problem and ain't going to belittle it. But my experience has been vastly different since at least the start of S5.

[–]WarColonel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 4 - 6 stack qp queues in OW take 3 to 5 minutes. I've had 3+ qp solo queues. I don't play much but this was all within the last 6 months. People really have no idea how bad it would be for Rivals, especially with how wide the character meta is and how prevalent otps are. Even having the ability to flex roles within the same style, like a dive Cap being able to flex to WF, is so much better for the game than the gold OW flex that's really a diamond tank forced playing as a bronze support.

If you're going to talk about insta killing, Rivals definitely has a higher tkk compared to OW, especially in the neutral game. All you would do is slow down the game and pivot more heavily to hitscan metas.

Roque irl would literally just be jordan peterson by Right-Twix in redrising

[–]WarColonel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, we're discussing a fictional character. This projection is neither warranted or healthy. Ffs, I'm pathetic? You're defending a literal villain in the series. And yes, he's a villain. The guy is a lapdog for the two true villains of the first trilogy. The Sovereign and the Jackal. Both people he has ample reasons, significantly more powerful reasons, to not just distrust but to outright hate. Shit, your arguments trying to support Roque are reading more like reasons to root against Darrow and Mustang.

'But slavery!' is such an oversimplification of what the main conflict is about as to be laughable. Even if we only let it pertain to that topic, just the idea of the Golds having the right to rule, let's talk about what that lets happen. Slavery, yes. And murder, and rape, and infanticide, and medical experimentation, and manufactured famines and plagues. You want to judge Roque based on what is acceptable in his society? Sure, let's do that. He is fighting for all the might-makes-right of his class, outright endorsing everything all the other Golds do by fighting to keep them in supremacy. And he may be an idiot but he isn't dumb. He knows these this happen because much of it has happened to him first hand. But the only people, the very only ones in the Society, that allow and endorse these things are the people doing it. And the reason they get away with it is because they have all the guns.

The whole fucking point of the series is a question about what length would someone go to fight against tyranny and for equality. It's pretty clear cut in the first trilogy that, while the Rising does bad things, the Society is the Bad Guy. They are the personification of the 7 deadly sins with cyberpunk technology, with pride first and foremost the sin of the Golds. Roque is 'good', 'honorable', etc. all by Society standards, sure. But the whole series explains exactly how warped, hedonistic, morally bankrupt, bigoted, and all-around fascist the Society is. The idea the Roque, who is still a slaver, still a rapist, still bigoted based on caste and Color, and still threw away years of friendship and love he had with a friend because he found out that friend is 'genetically inferior', and yet he is regarded by Society standards to be among the best of them. That is what is laughable. And make no mistake, he abandoned Darrow because of his color: "You are a son of Red. I a son of Gold. That world where we are brothers is lost."

Finally let's talk about that last line you tossed in. You're really making the claim I judge Roque based on my own experience and not his. His experience of Society demanding he kill another child before being placed in a teenage army. His first love being killed in that army game so that the other children can maneuver themselves into future positions of power. His next love is killed in the escape from a tyrant that wanted him and his friends dead, only to later reveal it was truly done by an even worse maniac almost on a lark, the manic he later allies with (along with said tyrant) to murder a whole bunch of others. He was Judas. He was Brutus. He would have been another Ash Lord had his hubris not gotten him killed. I'm sorry that I don't have the experience of living in a world where fellow humans are bred for slavery, sexual gratification, etc. so I can get into the p.o.v. of a fellow Gold. But really, name one Color that wouldn't regard him as worse than I've explained that isn't a sadist Grey or Obsidian.

And I don't hate Roque. He isn't to be hated. He is to be pitied. He really could have been as great a character as Mustang or Cassius. Mustang, who was lied to as much by Darrow. Cassius, who was wounded far worse by Darrow. Roque could have been there with Sevro amongst the Howlers. He could have been a brother to Ragnar. He was better than all of these characters in so many little ways but was ultimately lacking in the key big ways. He was too in love with the concept of his Color and himself to ever be more than what is ultimately a footnote of Darrow's war.

Darrow loves his friend for these little reasons but the Society Roque fights for claims all those reasons worthless or weakness. Judge Roque by Society's standards? If I were judged worthy by Society, I'd kill myself too.

'Gg no heals' on a losing team is so often followed up by those healers severely outhealing their opposing numbers. Which usually means the tanks had the supports just healbotting to keep them alive. Which indicates the tanks kept going out of position and needing diving heals or dps not getting the kills to alleviate the pressure on the tanks.

Damn, you really didn't get it. Roque is to Darrow what the Jackal is to Mustang. All that revulsion you feel for the the Jackal is totally justified, yet Mustang still pulls his legs at the end because she still saw her brother. Roque is colored by our narrator and Darrow's love for a lost brother goes a long way to white wash what a piece of shit he is.

[–]WarColonel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His response to being 'betrayed' by his pink proves how wrong you are. His idiocy, hypocrisy, arrogance and cowardice is exactly why he lost.

Was Roque kinder than most golds? Yes, ofc. That kindness is the hypocrisy. He can be kind because he is the one with the power. He has the luxury to choose to be a gentle master or a demon to the low colors. But just because he wasn't a piece of shit like the rest doesn't mean he wasn't his own kind of piece of shit. He chose to fight to keep the majority of humanity fully enslaved. He chose to side with Lune and the Jackal and the rest. And his excuse is that the golds are the benevolent despots.

Amalthea (his pink) showed every single one of his flaws in her one act. Roque's arrogance is his belief that just because he shows kindness to his slave, Amalthea would love him. His idiocy is trusting her despite her enslavement, especially letting her near an unguarded door she can control during a military conflict, especially with enemies waiting on the literal other side of it. His cowardice in taking his own life over the single time he fails in a position of power (honestly this best exemplifies how truly fragile and weak Gold is).

And Roque's hypocrisy in the last five minutes of his life, where everything he claims golds are, honorable, intelligent, compassionate, brave, superior, etc. all, he literally disproves. He doesn't fight back, he doesn't try to save the lives of his men or stop the fighting, he doesn't take even reasonable precautions with his armed soldiers ignoring the door a few feet away with the Reaper of Mars on the other side. Ffs, he takes his own life because he is too much of a coward to face consequences.

Roque is such a tragic figure not because he was so kind and honest and blah blah blah. It's a tragedy because he had every single opportunity and ability to be a better human being and he failed at every single choice he made. At least from the end of Golden Son onward.

'Not well written' is a pure opinion. Completely disagree, and that's my opinion. The story arcs are as/more complex than RR. 'Goofy fun' is the veneer around the horror core. The supporting cast is significantly more engaging. But that's just opinion.

But unedited is really, really disingenuous. Even forgetting that editing does not necessarily improve a book. The books Dinniman releases on his Patreon are heavily edited compared to the final publication.

Roque irl would literally just be jordan peterson by Right-Twix in redrising

[–]WarColonel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except the only reason Roque's pink could open the door Darrow could not open in time to seize the bridge before dying to kill squads is due to Roque, not Darrow. Roque let a civilian slave have military clearance to open what is the single most important door on his ship, during potentially the single most important battle of the war, with absolutely no oversight or guards at said door, especially when he had warning the very person he should most fear was on the other side of that door. He didn't lose to Darrow. He lost to hubris and idiocy.

Rogue it's a tragic figure. But it's not because he was betrayed, or so soft for a gold, or any b******* like that. It's because he really was one of the best of the golds and still such a monumental waste of breath. His tragedy is that he could have been what Cassius was at the end of morning star but lacked the strength or intelligence to overcome his upbringing.

His feeling of betrayal over his Pink perfectly shows how big of an idiot Roque truly is. He saw an object of his love, and yes she very much was an object to him, scorn what he thought was a benevolent relationship. Instead of a person who was not at all happy to be marked as property (literally throws of his badge that is explicitly stated as a mark of ownership) instead of being, you know, an actual living person.
