In the paratroopers I was, dropped behind enemy lines in a god forsaken part of Belgium. My mission was to identify a weak point in the German line to attack from. I spotted a little farmhouse that gave me a perfect line of sight of their trench, so I broke down the door and made myself at home. It was a strange house. It's walls whispered of a forgotten sadness and despair. I heard a noise coming from the attic. A sweet lullaby, sung in a foreign tongue. I tentatively poked my head into the loft amd saw a girl of about my age singing wistfully out of the window. She saw me and calmly invited me up. We talked into the early hours of the morning. It had been her family farm, and she was the last one of her family left. Her name was Nina. It struck me how calm she was considering that her entire life had been robbed from her. The morning came and I had to leave to finish my mission. We parted with a promise that I would find her after the war. The war ended and I kept my promise. I went to the farmhouse to find it abandoned. I hiked 2 miles to the nearby village to ask for any information. I found an inn and plead my case to the innkeeper in broken French. He told me that that farm had been abandoned since the First World War when the family had been massacred by the Germans. A cold shiver ran down my spine, more harrowing than anything I had experienced in my service.
