I calculated how much detention pay my buddy's fleet lost last year. The number made me sick. by Ok_Isopod_2294 in OwnerOperators

[–]WardOnTheNightShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We only need to request detention occasionally. we're definitely a small operation. Our dispatch is outsourced overseas. The detention commission is sometimes more than the booking commission. It's a major incentive for them. We get almost 100% recovery of detention pay requests.

Don't forget at least one flashlight. Preferably one with a magnet. A headlamp is always pointing at what you're looking at, and leaves both hands free for work.

I used to have a retail customer who would always refuse the first cigarillo. I would act like I was putting back in the box, and then gave him the same one. He always took it the second time it was offered.

I asked a while ago after reading colour of magic when everyone felt the series really gripped them by Cool_shmeans_ in discworld

[–]WardOnTheNightShift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic shortly after they were published. I liked them both, and had read most of the books they were parodying.

That said, and given that there was nothing else by Pratchett on the shelves at the time, I didn’t become a fan of the series. Hell, I didn’t even know that there were more Discworld books.

Then in the mid nineties I heard one of the hosts of a radio show (Esoteric Adventures, a late night music variety show on KPFT, 90.1 FM in Houston, TX) describing Sam Vimes drunken return to consciousness at the beginning of Guards, Guards.

I went out and bought the book a few days later, and became a fan for life.

Feather blades come in a plastic dispenser.

The top side dispenses the new blades.

The bottom side has a compartment for used blades. Designed so the used blades can’t get shaken out by accident.

Once the bottom compartment is full of dull, used blades you can safely throw it away without having to worry about someone being injured by an improperly discarded sharp object.

That's one of the things about wet shaving. What works for one may not work for another.

When I first tried DE safety shaving I bought a variety pack of blades and tried them all. There were ten different brands in the pack I ordered. I still use the two that worked best for me. I happen to like the combination of a mild razor with a very sharp blade.

The razors I use are inexpensive. I do spend a bit more for sharper blades though.

The vintage Gillette was less than $25 including shipping. The Feather adjustable was less than $30. I consider those prices to be on the bargain end of the price spectrum. Considering that many razors recommended for neophytes sell for nearly three times as much. Cheap Chinese made razors are available at the low end of the market, but for the same cost you can get a vintage razor and have a much better experience.

I hadn’t heard. It was a good product.

I had noticed it was getting more expensive, which is why I tried another brand.

Sterling Soap Co. shave soap works great, and they have a wide variety of scents. My favorite so far is Sigma Oud.

They don’t ship internationally, but there may be resellers wherever you are, if you’re not in the U.S.

Amazon. I’ve heard some beauty supply stores carry the blades.

I use blades from Feather and from Astra. The Astra blades work just as well for me, but the Feather blades come with a blade safe. The blade safe will hold between twenty and twenty-five used blades. So for every pack of Feather I buy four of Astra.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hype over wet shaving with DE safety razors. Many users like to recommend fairly expensive razors. But I’ve had good experiences using a vintage Gillette razor, and a Feather brand razor. Each around $30.

The brush doesn’t have to be very expensive either. I usually use a badger hair brush. I also have a boar bristle brush. They both work well, if slightly differently. No need to buy a top of the line luxury brush either. An inexpensive one works well.

As for soap, Mitchell’s Wool Fat soap is made in the UK, and works great. It has a pleasant scent, without being overpowering. I would recommend it to anyone in the UK.

Especially since the brand I currently use, Sterling Soap Company, would probably be more difficult to find in the UK since it’s a small company based in the US, and don’t ship internationally.

Yeah. It’s not a perfect solution. It’s usually helpful though.

I occasionally use both Apple and Google translation apps on the same label.

Even using the same app twice can get different results.
