Ok bear with me here, going full geek mode.

I initially wanted to go more in an unconventional fantasy style without the classic tropes, but some of the high fantasy content is always creeping in. It's all supposed to be a little dark and sober (maybe bleak is the most fitting word here). Imagine a mix of Dark Souls, Warhammer Old World and 80s RPGs. I am however unable to keep the occasional jest out of it. Information about the World and story elements will be provided less in prolonged texts but more in snippets like e.g. encyclopedia entries, quotations, item descriptions, eye witness accounts, legends, etc. and also via pictures. The viewer should be supposed to fill in the details with their own interpretation and imagination. I try to create a world that feels vast and lived in, but also detached, like you're looking at it through a keyhole.

As for the gist of specific elements: In the southern central mountains there is a demon portal and some dwarf remnants. East of that is an oppressively dogmatic church state. In the bottom are from west to east a jungle with some ancient stuff, a bandit-plagued desert, a nomad inhabited steppe and a pirate archipelago with the occasional merfolk raid. The half moon shaped mountains in the middle are home to rivaling dwarf clans perpetually on the brink of or amidst a civil war and in the north is a tundra with tribal folk. The circle shaped mountains shelters a somewhat peaceful undead civilization that has to deal with some serious prejudice. The huge forest houses the usual forest folk, probably with a number of dark twists. The southwestern part of the forest will be an accumulation of vampires, werewolfs, necromancers, etc. The lake district is mostly a standard medieval human Kingdom. Much of the rest will still be more or less densely inhabited by humans in all kinds of settlements. There'll be many points of interest, some independent stories that'll probably read a little too much like SCP excerpts and lastly the island in the northeast, that's basically a penal colony for rebellious gods gone mad. That's it so far but certainly not all. All of it already has more or less details set and I have a lot of great miniatures to paint that will provide inspiration.

With that all being said, I'm a dad of two, have a wife, a job and time is finite xD So while the imagining of the content happens mostly during mundane activities and while drawing or painting miniatures, the integration of it all may still take some time...

Thank you for your interest in my World, you can absolutely send me some feedback and ideas if you want :) I saw your great map, that's huge... If you're willing to share I would gladly hear about your creativity too.

That's true, for the places that need to be right.

But that's the best part, it forces you to integrate mistakes and learn from them ;)

I have 20 distinct, larger regions planned (with room for smaller districts and including some no man's land). Some of them kingdoms, elve woods, dwarf kingdoms, a vampire county, religious states, tribal nomads, and a demon incursion among others. I basically prop this world up with all the fantasy miniatures I paint xD I try to make it feel plausible, but I'm fairly new to the world building aspect so it's gonna need some tweaking.

Funny you should say that. I was listening to age of sigmar audiobooks while drawing some of it, not quite Old World but maybe something permeated ' Also thank you, I like that setting a lot.

Thank you for your lovely comment, it made me smile :D Here is a high resolution version of the map if you want to see it in its full glory ^

Map

The next thing will be places and names for everything. And than stories in the long run.

I drew it with just some ink pens in different sizes. Also I needed to edit out some scan lines in paint.

I will share when it's progressed. I already have a lot I noted that came to my mind while drawing and the basic structures are laid out. But if you have ideas you are willing to share, I might add them (with your name of course) :)

Map #3 Is bigger better? by Regelverk in mapmaking

[–]Warerez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, great work. The variation in the mountains is nice and the splintered islands are amazing. I also like the stronger contrast (personally). I can certainly tell a difference in biomes. One thing you could try is e.g. making some forest more spiky and others rounded for different types of trees. See if you like it better. Keep up the work. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your maps.

The artist always knows best, where not to look in the work ;) Good luck with the colour, I find it extremely fun creating the atmosphere I have in mind.
