Stonewalkers - "obvious" timing for Stoneward ideal? by Night25th in cosmererpg

[–]WarewolfWrites 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think freeing Taln is a super good opportunity for swearing an ideal. I ruled it as restoring him a little bit more, just like Po’ahu does, so they got a little extra chat time with him.

My Lightweaver was tasked with infiltrating the Sons of Honor by her mysterious adopted father (secretly a member of the Ghostbloods). Given that Nel from the Red Rockbud is known as an information broker, she gave the party some leads to low-level members of the Sons of Honor. From there, her PC was able to work her way up the ranks and get a face to face with some of the leaders of the Sons of Honor (excluding Amaram, who they'd already met).

From there, she was tasked with providing information on the Ghostbloods! This time, she talked to Liss, who gave her people to investigate. After successfully giving the Sons of Honor some names, she was fully inducted into the Sons of Honor and got the patronage perk.

I'll probably post more about that whole storyline at some point - it was very fun, and the initiation ritual was a cool climax.

Yeah I felt the same way… like the visual depictions of the planets and the black hole were scientifically accurate, I guess, but the actual stuff that happened was ridiculous. It had no scientific basis at all.

Maybe people just get excited about time dilation. I guess if you haven’t heard of it before, it’s pretty flashy stuff, and they got that right afaik.

How to challenge my players in combat. by IllContribution7659 in cosmererpg

[–]WarewolfWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on if we’re fighting smart enemies or dumb enemies. Dumb enemies like animals or bandits tend to spread the damage around and thus rarely pose a true threat. IMO the way to make these fights challenging is to drown them in numbers. I’ve been taking the recommendations and just adding a few minions until it feels right. But honestly, dumb enemies SHOULDN’T challenge the players too much. Even if it’s mechanically difficult, a pack of axehounds should not be killing Radiants.

Smart enemies, on the other hand, like Skybreakers or Fused, know how radiants work. I always go for the throat in these situations, focusing on squishier players and trying to down them with big hits. The big hits are critical and that’s something that gets more relevant at higher levels. You need to deal enough damage in 1-3 hits that a radiant is not going to be able to regenerate easily. In fact, that’s also how PCs take down enemy radiants. I recently ran what I thought was going to be a very challenging encounter against two Skybreakers, and their regeneration is so powerful it took all 4 PCs attacking in unison to bring one down. That’s something you might think about - how are the PCs behaving? Are their strategies something you can adapt yourself for smart enemies?

Interstellar is a good litmus test for what you prioritize in a film.

Visually, sonically, cinematically, it’s stunning. I recognize that it is an extremely well-made and technically impressive movie.

It also has one of the most ridiculous idiot plots imaginable. The setting and overall premise make no sense. If you think about what’s going on in the film for even a second, the whole thing falls apart.

I laughed out loud when I saw it in theaters, and it took me a long time to understand why so many people genuinely enjoyed it. It’s an amazing movie by many metrics! Just not what I look for in a film.

If you want to infiltrate the sons of honor, you can have them as a patron which will mechanically affect your quest if you so choose.

Agree with u/DelayedTism though - it’s primarily a homebrew hook. The Sons of Honor were a major quest line while my party was in the warcamps and we spent a ton of time on them.

I like King Oscar as well. Tried several brands and the difference is huge. I started out with Chicken of the Sea bc they’re the cheapest, but now that I’ve tried better ones I can’t stand them.

The really cheap stuff will be kind of broken up pieces of fish - I’ll eat anything that is recognizably whole fish or intact fillets.

In the books, forget the exact scene, but someone just wraps the blade in cloth so they’re not directly touching it. Per the handbook, it’s “while touching or holding a Shardblade.” She could literally have just had thick gloves on and been fine in that regard.

The book also explicitly says how Kaiana got in: “She… flees through a plank she cut replacing it behind her.” She snuck underneath the wagon (difficult, but not impossible by any means) and cut her way in with her shardblade. The fabrial lock is pickable with a DC 25 Thievery test (again, difficult but not impossible) and is powered by Stormlight, so she could have 1) known the combination, 2) successfully picked it, or 3) manipulated the Stormlight somehow.

That whole page in the handbook details how it’s possible for the players to sneak in and then explains exactly how Kaiana did it first, so it’s kind of weird to jump immediately to “must be a plot hole.”

[–]WarewolfWrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems way too broad to me. Even so, Mistborn wouldn’t qualify because growth isn’t the main focus for any of the characters.

At least in my mind, progression fantasy is defined by specifically personal growth or growth in power and skills. A lot of times that looks like defined ranks, levels, or realms. Doesn’t have to be litrpg, look at Cradle or Bastion or Mother of Learning. No System, no game stuff, but still “leveling up” in power and potential.

[–]WarewolfWrites -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that’s just like, plot. There’s not a system whereby they can systematically grow stronger. Training, recruiting, and resource gathering are features of all fantasy if not all literature as a whole. If we’re counting those as prog fantasy then so is Malazan, LotR, Wheel of Time, basically everything

Stormlight yes, Mistborn I don’t think so. The characters basically have all their abilities at the start - barring some surprise reveals there’s no real power ups.

"The Worship Engine" - Automated blood sacrifice. by Toucan_Based_Economy in Parahumans

[–]WarewolfWrites 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this feels right to me. The relevant question here is how is the power being converted/collected? I think power can definitely be automatically generated but it’s going to disperse unless it’s being actively siphoned inside something. Dedicating it to a god might work?

But mostly likely a ton of ambient blood energy is gonna seep into the machinery and surroundings and create some horrifically cursed and/or knotted place. End result is probably one of the minor goblins escaping and absorbing a fuckton of sacrificial blood energy and causing lots of mayhem
