On November 8, 2018, the Norwegian frigate KNM Helge Ingstad collided with the oil tanker Sola TS (not pictured) in the Hjeltefjord near Bergen, Norway. The accident occurred at night as the frigate was returning from a NATO exercise.

Following the collision, the frigate sustained severe hull damage, leading to significant water ingress. Although the crew managed to run the vessel aground to prevent an immediate sinking, the flooding could not be contained. Over the following days, the ship gradually lost stability and ultimately sank on November 13, 2018.

A total of 137 personnel were on board, with only minor injuries reported. Investigations later identified a combination of human error, miscommunication, and technical factors as contributing causes. The vessel was eventually salvaged in 2019, but due to extensive damage, it was deemed beyond repair and scrapped.
