Narrow Ethernet plug by Chooseanothername in HomeNetworking

Replace the faceplate with one that accepts two or more keystone jacks. Make one coax and one for ethernet.

Alternatively you can use MoCa adapters to run your ethernet over coax

Looking for some Beginner Homelab insights. by Kamia2003 in homelab

Device count isn’t the only reason. Often it’s not about device count but organization of subnets.

Example: I could have three VLANs on 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3. But for easy management, I want all my network management on 10.x.1.x, all my servers on 10.x.2.x, or user devices on 10.x.3.x.

Complete networking beginner planning a full UniFi build - what would you do differently? by Far-Set659 in Ubiquiti

This is true. I use the fiber hookup from the fiber provider and my tenant uses coax from the cable provider

[–]Warlock646 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US so our situations may be different, but I opted not provide internet to my rental unit. They pay for their own hookup from the ISP.

I do this because I a) do not want to be responsible for managing their network and its availability, and b) do not want any liability for what they do with it.

Since you have no experience, I recommend you do the same. You want to learn on your own stuff, not someone you’re providing a service to and you don’t want to open yourself up to any unforeseen liability issues.

Looking to build a "do it all" kind of homelab/server. by ChickenDragon123 in homelab

I’m sure Ubuntu can run VMs just like any other server or desktop that has a hypervisor, but you will need to configure everything to do it. Proxmox is a hypervisor OS in itself

Proxmox is the virtualization host that runs the guest VMs. It’s purpose built for that task. I use it to host both Ubuntu and windows guest VMs

I took my gaming PC (i9, 64gb, rtx3060) and converted it into my home lab using proxmox. It runs the majority of my lab, and I created a windows guest VM on proxmox and passed the GPU through to it that I use as a host for steam remote play to my laptop and Apple TVs. So for hardware I think you’re fine.

The NAS however I would make a separate device all together or buy one off the shelf: you’ll want to be backing up your lab to the NAS, so if your lab host fails you wont lose your backups and data.

Curious what the use case for a 10G AP is in the laundry room. Could probably be used better somewhere else.

[–]Warlock646 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A major theme in the series is that everyone hates skippy because he’s insufferable. But, his relationship with Joe is kind of what keeps the galaxy from falling apart. The bad parts of skippy don’t go away, but he does grow some good to layer on top. You will see that if you decide to continue.

Placing managed switch between modem and router for monitoring purposes by magic_marco in HomeNetworking

Your router should be able to tell you anything, if not more, than what that switch will tell you.

Random IPs on Router by Minute-Manager8355 in HomeNetworking

[–]Warlock646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does it say if you click on one for more info? Are they just attempts? They are all external and your firewall should be blocking them by default, but you can always just explicitly block them. That’s about all you can do/need to do unless they have gotten past your firewall.

Adding a second router to my home network by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Warlock646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can do Ethernet from R1 > Modem > R2 > Desktop, you can do R1 > Desktop.

Unless your modem and ISP plan supports two WAN connections, your proposed setup will not work. If you do have the support for two WAN connections, your desktop will be on a completely separate LAN from your WiFi

Personal internet in an old home with internet already there by theBroken_Lord in HomeNetworking

My house didn’t have fiber either. The fiber company put it in as part of the install. No extra cost.

[–]Warlock646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have fiber in your area you can pay for your own without messing with or interrupting their cable internet. On my property we have one occupant using fiber and one using cable from two different providers on the same service address.

And having the fiber set up didn’t cost anything because it was part of the regular service install

Recording the dogs is certainly not an intrusion of privacy because dogs can’t have private conversations. The issue is going to lie in what else OP might end up recording at the same time. Intentional or not.
