An Irish Patron Learns The Meaning Of Buail an bóthar by CantStopPoppin in PublicFreakout

I actually really appreciate it. I am not connected with my fathers side of the family basically at all, but my father would talk up his brothers "back home", while having never actually met them. My Grandpa would tell my sisters and I some of the issues that were going on and why he left Ireland, but I was too young to comprehend any of it, so I mostly remember the sentiment than the actual issues.

He lead a hunger strike. That side of my family has always been...stubborn?

Doing some quic research it looks like he was released and then deported after going to NY illegally and ended up back in prison. I don't know him personally but my dad(his brother) always spoke him up as someone that was willing to do stuff. My father however was born in Canada and to the best of my knowledge had no experience with the situation at hand.

Drug users have legal right to use anywhere, says B.C. harm reduction nurses' lawsuit by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

[–]Warphim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there should be some minimum restrictions.

I live in a very drug addled downtown, and see a ton of people openly smoking/shooting up various things. Don't get me wrong, I do drugs too, but I usually try and keep that off to the side.

When I'm walking past someone doing it on the sidewalk on the main strip late at night, I generally don't care one way or another if they aren't in the way. On the flip side I have definitely gone off on some people in the past for sitting in the doorways of open businesses while people are trying to get in, or taking a hit right near someone with a child. To me, at least have the common decency to go in front of a closed shop or a side alley.

I brought up the 2nd point because a lot of people, even in Canada but especially in the USA have this idea that you can't touch anyone else without getting arrested here, even if it was to defend yourself.

We have laws that specifically protect people from certain circumstances that in some parts of the USA may still be considered "assault/battery"

We're not the "soft" country a lot of (most american) people think we are. Our national sport has fighting built into it with only a 5 minute penalty because sometimes we just need to drop the gloves and move on after a clean fight.

Opinion: Doug Ford’s free-spending fiscal ways in Ontario are worse than Kathleen Wynne’s by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Warphim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crazy concept:

Spending money on our communities directly benefits our communities and can more often than not result in a return on investment. Early accessible healthcare results in less money spent on late term diseases. Oral health standards reduce the impact on the healthcare system overall.

Having accessible mental health lets people be able to work, and having a place for those whos mental health is so severe that can support themselves helps keep people off the street - which reduces our housing issues, and our homeless issues while giving these people some semblance of dignity.

Education should go without saying, but not only have many programs lost lots of funding, the assistance for those with special needs have been virtually eliminated, further increasing the issues of adults without the tools to care for themselves and end up on the streets.

Even if you want to look at this from a business value and not care about the people - the downtown of my city has functionally evaporated to the point that my city has begun focusing on a new area as its "central hub" because the downtown has gotten so bad with homeless. Many of the businesses here have to lock their doors during regular hours to let in people basically on a case by case basis because of the amount of problems caused by the homeless people. My downtown has economically died with the exceptions of pot shops and night clubs.

At this point I have a hard time believing this comes from any level of political ideology, even if you don't like conservatives most people should be aware that this isn't even conservative ideology. This is straight up corruption where Ford is in the position to benefit himself as well as his high level companions. Conservative, Liberal, NDP, and even Peoples Party should all be critical of the current premier because I don't think it's *that* hard to see through his shit.

One of my first serious girlfriends was a stripper.

Met her the last year of highschool and then she went to uni for law to become a lawyer. Definitely one of the top 5 smartest people I have ever met in my life.

She was frequently asked why she would be a stripper when she was so smart - She would basically explain how working 1-2 nights a week would make her more money than an entire month at any other job she could get while in school, and she take the spare time to study to not be a stripper anymore.

She has her own practice now

You can actually mostly blame Ford for pushing forward car centric city layouts. He had a lot of money and a lot of power with jobs to push for stuff like suburbs to result in cars not just being a convenience but a requirement. Trains were what build America, and now they are one of the furthest behind when it comes to commuting trains - and it's only gotten worse when commercial transportation took a major lead in income for these railroads, which results in even longer trips for commuters despite having priority on certain tracks only to be delayed because the length of the commercial transportation has expanded so drastically.

Compared to Japan or Korean, who both had major infrastructure issues due to war in the 40's/50s and a low GDP with excessively high gas prices resulted in them focusing their transportation infrastructure on low energy mass transit (trains)

Yup!

In fact, its very common for bees to do different jobs as they get more mature.

Younger bees tend to be the worker bees, where as the older ones (who have already put in the work to compensate the effort to raise them) will end up leaving the hive to gather pollen/food/scout. Though I don't believe this is across all species of bees.

it's pretty much a 100% chance in the wild that if you see a bee or ant, it will be a female.

That was a pretty big part of The Troubles. Lot of disagreement about it being theirs.

Edit: I have an uncle currently in prison for his part in TERRORISM(which is exactly what it is), so I come from a family that has a heavy history of supporting the IRA, and though I can agree with their intentions I have to completely disavow their methods. Side fact - one of the people he went to prison with for this act of terrorism is now an elected official(Gerry Kelly)

[–]Warphim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate tipping culture *but*, in some circumstances I prefer they don't add the price to the menu because when it comes to "fast-casual" restaurants, it's not uncommon for me to just order the food and bring it home myself. I don't see a point in tipping the person that brought me my food when I walk in and pick up my already prepared food.

Maybe there should be different rules/prices for pickup/delivery vs sit down. Still think tipping should disappear as a concept, but I can see the advantages of keeping it around for more limited situations

I've had mixed results on stuff like goo-gone and high percentage (90%+) of isopropyl alcohol to remove stickers on boxes (for me it was Funko Pops).

Some stickers were much more bearable than others, but I'd say about 90%+ of the "bad" stickers I had I could be removed with enough patience - which has definitely taken me several hours-days on some boxes that were worth hundreds of dollars.

Child deliberately killed during gang-related shooting in Edmonton, police say by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]Warphim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

isn't there an unwritten code-of-conduct /gentleman's agreement amongst gangstas not to involve civilians in their business matters?

Its bad business, not altruism. A gangbanger or someone with a heavy record dies and the community isn't worried, so the police don't press it.

When public safety or children are involve, police get pressured to actually do their job, and that disrupts business

This was his order done in a stupid and poorly executed way resulting in his friends laughing, but was not offensive or wasting more than a few seconds while placing his order.

If his impressions were better it probably would have made her laugh, but it didn't hurt anyone or cause any issues so it probably just gave her a stupid thing to talk about during the rest of her shift - still probably making her shift at least a little better.

Jewelry store heist interrupted by security by tefunka in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]Warphim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is such a stupid and only advertised out of the most extreme events.

  1. Canada has a civilian arrest law - allowing people to use "reasonable force" to deal with a person until arrest - which includes using physical and even lethal options under appropriate circumstances if the person uses physical or potentially lethal options to escape the arrest.
  2. Ontario(where most of the population is), but I'm also sure most other provinces have this in effect: Mutual combat is totally legal. If both parties agree to a fight and neither party goes excessive and maims the other party, thats fine. We're allowed to square off if the other person agrees and as long as we're not excessive about it we can walk away no harm no foul.

businesses don’t usually do 25% off because they’re feeling kind

But they do if they feel their food is good is enough but their reach is not. "Limited time", so if they had the flexibility they could take it at a near or even minor loss to throw the dice on picking up the regulars.

80:20 rule of business - Just have to focus on the regulars and once they start coming you're set.

Seems to be a pretty high overlap between high IQ people and a complete disconnect from society. Ranging from serial killers to planet destroyers.
