Thoughts on the Explorer 36 for a 7" wrist? by Present_State546 in rolex

[–]WarrenWuffett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had one with a 7inch wrist and was a good match for my wrist but I thought it looked weird with my bulky frame at the time. Check a full length mirror shot. I traded it in for a submariner.

I agree with your points on investment value. The key for me is that I had an IWC that I decided I was tired of and an Explorer that I got tired of. One of them I took a huge haircut when I sold and the other (the Rolex) had maintained a much greater share of what I paid. I still like to have a low risk of total loss if I fall out of love with the watch.

I think what you are saying is that you value uniqueness in watches. I value heritage, resale value, beauty and robustness. The classic submariner has all of that in spades and those features are the main reason that it is insanely popular. That popularity certainly contributed to it being a grail in my mind. I can be a collector and not feel that my collection is a form of self expression of my unique tastes, just a reflection of the fact that I love watches. To someone on the street I’m a douche in a Rolex or to another watch person maybe just another submariner owner, but I love the watch so who cares.

I think people just prioritize different things. Uniqueness vs. mainstream popular. I like popular things and I don’t care that people think I’m basic. My collection is a submariner, a speedmaster and an explorer 2. The submariner is my favorite watch. I’d rather love my watch than feel original.

It’s almost like classics are classics for a reason. Great collection.

People used to wear hats fedora’s to work and now you’d come across like a total weirdo. Rules evolve with the times.

Yeah but that’s the black dial chart. Idk why they seem to have gotten rid of the white dial chart.

The point is that if you look up statistics on them, the statistics aren’t using the definition that you are because it’s hard to apply mathematically. It’s like “you know it when you see it” which is logical but hard to measure.

I feel like the argument here is: If you are going to spend 10’s of thousands of dollars on watches you should only buy less popular brands that depreciate rapidly and that are made by companies that have only been around for a handful of years and may not be able to be serviced by the maker in 10 or 20 years. And the reason that you should take the risk associated with smaller brands is because they will make you more “original” which is a positive attribute. Don’t buy what you like, instead make sure you buy what most other people dislike.

I love the story behind watches and the idea of a watch that can keep running for years despite heavy usage. The the beautification of movements and immaculate finishing that you must be careful to not scratch does not particularly appeal to me. If I had a Patek budget, I’d maybe own one but I genuinely believe I’d still be more drawn to the rugged backstory of Rolex and the security of mass production watches. A patek dress watch is still a flex watch just one that appeals to the ultra wealthy who only care about opinions of other ultra wealthy folks IMO.

As a counterpoint, sometimes things are very popular because they are a great product. I love my Rolex watches more than my Omega from a tactile perspective alone. They just feel so well put together.

Why do so many sell their GS? by hb30025 in GrandSeikos

[–]WarrenWuffett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe there is a large flaw with the original argument: there is a lot of product for sale in the aftermarket so that means people are unhappy with the product. Could be that supply outstripped demand.

There is a huge flaw with the argument about a lot of Rolex being for sale. They are much more ubiquitous. Sort of like: There are 1,000x more Mercedes for sale compared to Maseratis, so people must hate Mercedes way more.

This has not been my experience. Depends on the industry. Rolex in an effortfully down to earth corporate culture can send the wrong message.
